Young adults starting to smoke as celebs are making smoking glamorous

Firstly, it’s very sad that people are copying things that celebrities do. Embrace the power of being individual. I never copied any celebrities’ dress sense, hairstyles etc.

Stop being a sheep! This copying celebrities is making some young people insecure which isn’t healthy for MH.

Why are people starting smoking? My friends who work for retailers have seen an increase in asking for ID when young people buy cigarettes. Plus the cheapest pack is now £11.50. How can they afford £80 plus a week if they start to smoke? I’m not sure if they are 20 a day people or what.

A model smokes

Are celebs such as Charli XCX and Addison Rae making smoking 'cool' again?

The cigarette is having a resurgence in pop culture and smoking is being glamorised in film, TV and music.

What an utterly depressing article.

I don't doubt this is a very real thing - people so easily influenced regarding smoking was the very reason why smoking promotion was historically banned in advertising and the media.
And this isn't the first time since then concerns have been raised about people in the public eye making it look glamorous.

It just never ceases to amaze me how anyone can find smoking appealing. It's a filthy habit that damages and kills the smoker and, more importantly, the people the smoker lives with and who have to inhale the noxious fumes.
And the cost of smoking is so expensive in monetary terms its amazing young people can afford to copy these " celebrities "
Perhaps it's time for another roll out of anti smoking propaganda to reinforce the stupidity of smoking.
Perhaps something like the " Ashtray Lil" adverts of years ago might hit home about how unattractive smoking really makes a person even if the health impact is lost on these sheep who blindly immitate other people.

I was gobsmacked by the university student who said “it’s not just a habit, it’s an aesthetic”. So sad that supposedly intelligent young people are so heavi,y influenced by vacuous pop culture.

I read this earlier and was shocked tbh. I’m late 40s and have had conversations where the consensus was smoking would die out as we couldn’t name a single person who we knew smoked of our generation!

Its very sad that smoking is seen as a culture - I guess society does move in cycles!

I doubt they're actually influenced by celebrities. More likely to have started vaping and/or smoking dope, then progressed to regular, daily cigarettes.

It's odd. Older people still smoke, young people now smoke, hardly anyone middle-aged does.
