Can anyone help me with my itchy scalp?

My scalp is more or less itchy and now burning all year round, but with winter coming it always gets worse.

I don’t have dandruff. I only use shampoo and conditioner, I don’t dye or use other products, my hair is fine and oily - but my scalp is dry.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Nits? If you have kids it's common.

Copperoliverbear · 02/11/2024 15:47

You may need to go to the drs maybe it's psoriasis or something.
Maybe get some T gel or polytar until you can get to the drs.

Didisquat · 02/11/2024 15:48

I use polytar shampoo…. It’s stinks but stops the itching pretty much straight away

No, no kids.
It’s more of an dry / sensitive scalp issue.

Nizoral shampoo from the chemists is very good . My DH has extremely sensitive skin and the dermatologist prescribes it for him.

Does your shampoo contain sodium lauryl sulphate? It's an irritant, causing redness and itching in lots of people. Try a natural shampoo (a supermarket one will be fine, you don't need to go to a health food shop) and see if the itching clears up.

sastil · 02/11/2024 15:58

I have this exact same problem.
So far I've tried nizoral, t gel and ketaconozole shampo with no relief.
GP asked me to send a photo in and said it was just dermatitis and not that bad but I am miserable with the itching and self conscious. My face is really spotty too.
It started becoming so much worse in late august with a weird greasy film on my hair. It's also affecting my eye lashes.
I've just booked to see a private dermatologist in three weeks because I am so fed up with it (pmi with work).

Betnovate lotion from the GP is good

I used coconut oil on mine and it worked so well with only one application. Cheap, and rinsed out easily.

I have an itchy scalp, started about a year ago, think it is menopause related.
Medicated shampoo evey other wash stops it getting scaly (which was particularly unpleasant).

Tomatina · 02/11/2024 16:08

I use E45 Dry Scalp shampoo, it's pretty good (leave it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing). Boots do it. Nizoral is also fine.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 02/11/2024 16:25

Body shop ginger shampoo and conditioner

TGel

Nizoral

I had to use betnovate for a while

Cocothecoconut · 02/11/2024 18:29

I’ve also had this
steroid lotion ( betacap) and cream stuff (dermacool) both off the doc has made a lot of difference to the itch

DilemmaDelilah · 02/11/2024 18:32

I'm using Nizoral at the moment which seems to have relieved my itchy scalp. I have just bought some shampoo from l'Occitane for sensitive scalp, which I am hoping will work as well.

I second this ☺️

AlpacaMittens · 02/11/2024 18:43

I had the same. Used expense shampoos, got a prescription for a medicinal shampoo, the works. They helped - until the itchiness came back. What helped keep it completely at bay was using Vosene shampoo. It's just unbelievably good. My local Savers do a coconut version of Vosene and it's just the best thing ever.

Certain vitamin deficiencies can cause a dry scalp whilst your hair remains the same as before.

ScrambledSmegs · 02/11/2024 18:55

I’m sensitive to sodium laurel/laureth sulphate and some other foaming agents commonly found in liquid shampoos. Even supposedly natural ones.

I recently bought a rice protein bar shampoo for travelling and it’s the first one I’ve tried in ages that doesn’t cause irritation. Not sure whether it’s because it’s a solid shampoo or because of the rice protein but I’m counting it as a win either way.

FYI it’s called Give Me Strength by KinKind. I’ve only tried the shampoo as I love my regular conditioner.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/11/2024 19:00

Eucerin scalp lotion is good and doesn't make your hair greasy. You could try that with T-Gel (the original type).

Which ones please?

claudiawinklemansfringetrimmer · 02/11/2024 19:08

Another vote for Nizoral, my husband swears by it but it needs to be this one not the newer foaming shampoo one. There was a bit of a shortage a while ago and I ended up driving to a random Boots in a village 25 mins away as they said they had one in stock- there were two other people there looking for it!

Can anyone help me with my itchy scalp?
