Can anyone help me with my itchy scalp?

My scalp is more or less itchy and now burning all year round, but with winter coming it always gets worse.

I don’t have dandruff. I only use shampoo and conditioner, I don’t dye or use other products, my hair is fine and oily - but my scalp is dry.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

DH has a super sensitive scalp since his chemo, although his hair is growing nicely. The Philip Kingsley scalp tonic - possibly the same ine recommended by @Baddaybigcloud has been brilliant for him. He only needs it once or twice a week so it lasts forever.

He orders that and an itchy scalp shampoo to use as necessary directly from their website, about once a year. I think he spends about £60/yr and they are very generous with bonus samples

After suffering with similar for about 18 months and trying what felt like every single over the counter product / shampoo under the sun, the only thing that sorted mine was Betacap on prescription from the GP.

Avocado and peppermint oil.

I’ve tried everything. EVERYTHiNG.

Nizarol worked but is very drying, so kind of made it worse.

The game changer was suggested on here. As l am dry and itchy shampoo. The best thing. Got rid of all eczema on DD’s neck too

I had this for over a year, tried all the shampoos which only worked for a couple of days so I had some blood tests done and my iron was borderline low. So I started taking iron supplements from Holland and Barrett and the itching disappeared. Would be worth getting a blood test to check for any deficiencies.

T Gel Sensitive Scalp (salycilic acid - v effective). I shampoo twice using one of those round plastic shampoo brushes to massage my scalp, and it feels lovely afterwards. I have to do this every other day or I get the itches.

Eucerin DermoCapillaire Calming Scalp Treatment for the in between days. Just apply it straight to scalp, it feels cool and relieves the itch for a while.

Coal tar shampoos - if those don't work selsun.

It seems to be stress triggered for DS so exams he really struggles.

Water filter. Expensive shampoos and medicated ones will help for a little bit. But putting a water filter on my shower did the trick, permanently. You can buy them off amazon, replace the cartridges frequently.

I buy it from Amazon

I'm really not sure if mine is seb dermatitis as I have no flakes or dandruff, just a weird greasy residue on my hair and my eyes. Sometimes my scalp itches, sometimes it's fine.
It makes me really self conscious and im counting down until I see a dermatologist.

Coconut oil relieves my itchy scalp and body. I use it after tar soap.

Windmillsofyourminds · 06/11/2024 10:30

@sastil I use Aveeno Skin Relief Soothing Shampoo, With Soothing Oat, Suitable For very dry sensitive Scalp, Suitable for Thin & Fragile Hair, Soap Free, High Tolerance Formula, 300ml from Amazon.
Now that my scalp is better, I use Fresh Greens scalp soothing shampoo as I prefer the smell.
I also use Aveeno skin relief moisturing hand cream for very dry hands on any other very dry patches elsewhere, which I find better than any other non steroid creams on prescription. I realise we are all different, so what suits me might not suit others.

Agree avoid SLS for sure …
Betnovate to clear it and then maintain with natural shampoos etc

Funnily, anything that DOESN'T have SLS in it, causes my scalp to itch, hair doesn't feel clean, hair clumps together after drying and it's really stiff. Shampoos with SLS in them - brilliant clean feel, fresh and shiny hair, no itchiness. Go figure!

For example the Aveeno stuff that lots of people swear by, just did not do anything for me and it was a shame as they all smelt amazing and were so velvety and lathering up fabulously.
