Can anyone help me with my itchy scalp?

ItTook8WibesToKnow7WasEnough · 02/11/2024 15:43

My scalp is more or less itchy and now burning all year round, but with winter coming it always gets worse.

I don’t have dandruff. I only use shampoo and conditioner, I don’t dye or use other products, my hair is fine and oily - but my scalp is dry.

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

The only thing!

Can anyone help me with my itchy scalp?

I’ve used the Umberto Giannini, Nizoral and the Body Shop Ginger shampoos but I think Vichy Dercos is the best.

Circlingthesun · 02/11/2024 19:22

I use aveeno oat milk shampoo n conditioner n it's great, soothes my scalp n makes my hair fluffy and soft.

I also use neutropenia T gel coal tar once a week which helps keep my scalp eczema under control.

AnnaDelvorkina · 02/11/2024 19:24

I used to use Body Shop ginger shampoo, Maybe it’s still available on eBay or similar?

Try not to over rinse and not to use too hot water.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 02/11/2024 19:25

Do you use dry shampoo Op?

It might just need a simple shampoo change. We use TreSemme in this hoise and one time there wasn't the exact one we usually get so I picked another one the same but different (think moisturising instead of conditioning or something like that) it makes my scalp burn and itch like crazy!

Scrabbelator · 02/11/2024 19:45

I suffered from burning scalp and no shampoos helped ease it. Through a process of elimination, I realised it was caused by histamine intolerance. Once I cut out high histamine foods from my diet, my scalp returned to normal, and I've had no problems with it since (five years now with no reoccurrence).

Coconut oil!! (can get a massive jar of the pure stuff on amazon/supermarket for a fiver and lasts forever)

ItTook8WibesToKnow7WasEnough · 02/11/2024 19:52

Thank you so much everyone.
I’m checking out all of your suggestions, I thought there was no hope and now I need to choose where to start!

Millions of thanks.

I did check my current shampoos and all of them (3) sodium lauryl sulphate, so I’ll check the next one won’t have that.

And someone asked if I use dry shampoo. No I don’t, I did at some point but had to stop, it made my scalp so much worse after just few uses.

Also, I just re-read my opening post and I just want to apolize for my terrible english! It’s amazing that anyone understood me! Sorry!

Again, thank you everyone.

I've just bought the new sulfate free head and shoulders. It's called head and shoulders bare. Just used it tonight for the first time and so far so good!!!

boomdeboom · 02/11/2024 19:56

Although what helps when my scalp has been really bad is lathering in the shampoo on dry hair and leaving it for 15 mins before getting in the shower and rinsing it out. I don't think people leave dandruff shampoo on for the required amount of time in the shower before rinsing.

JustWalkingTheDogs · 02/11/2024 19:57

I use TGel shampoo for my itchy scalp.

myrosehasleftme · 02/11/2024 20:07

I lost all my hair a year ago post chemo and it gave me a chance at last to sort my scalp out! I used a shampoo called Healpsorin which contains salicylic acid and cleared any scaling. I now know it is absolutely caused by SLS and use the kinkind rice protein soap as recommended by a pp. if I change even for a day the itchiness is back with a vengeance.

I came to say MooGoo. Been brilliant for me too. Get it direct from the company though.

I have an itchy scalp, started about a year ago, think it is menopause related.
Medicated shampoo evey other wash stops it getting scaly (which was particularly unpleasant).

This. I think it's hormonal for me too. I've found faith in nature is good for it. Can't use really cheap shampoos any more.

Scrabbelator · 02/11/2024 20:25

sastil · 02/11/2024 15:58

I have this exact same problem.
So far I've tried nizoral, t gel and ketaconozole shampo with no relief.
GP asked me to send a photo in and said it was just dermatitis and not that bad but I am miserable with the itching and self conscious. My face is really spotty too.
It started becoming so much worse in late august with a weird greasy film on my hair. It's also affecting my eye lashes.
I've just booked to see a private dermatologist in three weeks because I am so fed up with it (pmi with work).

This sounds like seborrheic dermatitis, which is believed to be an inflammatory response to malassezia yeast on the skin.
An antifungal cream might help your skin, but what you really need to do is look at your diet. You need to really restrict foods that can cause an overgrowth of yeast in the body. Sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol are major culprits.
While seborrheic dermatitis is not caused by candida, it might be helpful for you to look up the Candida Diet to get information on what an antifungal diet looks like; what foods to eat and what ones to avoid.

BustPipes · 02/11/2024 20:31

T Gel. It's a bit stinky (if you use the brown one, and I'd start off with that if you've currently got an itchy scalp) and you really have to use it as your daily shampoo to get the benefits - but it really works.

LionWings · 02/11/2024 23:20

I used to get this, I now use a shampoo / conditioner bar e.g, www.peacewiththewild.co.uk/product-category/haircare/shampoo/

They're really easy to use and great that they don't have all the additives

poetrylover · 02/11/2024 23:26

I get an itchy scalp too and no dandruff. I use head and shoulders 2 in 1 as is more conditioning than just a shampoo and then I use any good conditioner I fancy. At the moment I have the H&S one, but interchange with John frieda, or palmers. Depends what is on offer.

WGACA · 02/11/2024 23:32

Moo Goo has been the only thing that’s worked for me too. Are you stressed? My scalp is always more itchy when I’m stressed.

Windmillsofyourminds · 03/11/2024 09:32

I have Seborrheic dermatitis, which causes the sore, itchy skin. I found Aveeno shampoo cured mine. It helped a bit at first but over a couple of months completely cured it.
I don't have my hair washed at the hairdressers as their shampoo will bring the problem back.

Makingchocolatecake · 04/11/2024 22:36

BaronessBomburst · 02/11/2024 15:56

Does your shampoo contain sodium lauryl sulphate? It's an irritant, causing redness and itching in lots of people. Try a natural shampoo (a supermarket one will be fine, you don't need to go to a health food shop) and see if the itching clears up.

I came here to say this. Sulphates are awful for your skin and hair and 95% of shampoo has it in as it's just a cheap foaming agent, but strips all your oils. My hair gets waaaaay less greasy since I quit sulphates.

babbi · 04/11/2024 22:42

Agree avoid SLS for sure …
Betnovate to clear it and then maintain with natural shampoos etc

Which one? I've tried so many and no relief after a few weeks.
