to think if you a fast swimmer, you swim in the fast lane

I mean surely you can tell you're a fast swimmer. You are overtaking lots of people, getting in their way and you are going the same speed as people who are in the fast lane.

Had a swimmer who insisted on just using the Medium speed lane, but instead of swimming anti clockwise like everyone else, he just decided to go up and down in the middle - so as to dodge the people swimming at medium speed.

I was so tempted to say something. Is there such a thing as swimming rage?

I think swimming rage does exist, yes.

Lifeguards at my pool would have stopped this (usually they would, anyway; we have a new crop, haven't seen what they're like with arseholes yet.) They should definitely be in the fast lane and not pissing everyone else off.

Was the fast section busy?

I'm in-between the fast and medium lane swimming, depending on my energy levels! If the fast lane is empty I'll stay in there, but if it's full of serious swimmers I'll go in the medium one as I don't feel quite fast enough!

Swim-rage is a thing! It's the "won't put my head in the water" brigade that I dislike, swimming side by side and chatting, taking up loads of space, then getting annoyed at anyone that dares enter their lanes!

It was quiet - just 3 people.

I feel a lot of swimmer rage, though I don't act on it, at all the people who think they're medium lane swimmers but are in fact slow. If you don't put your head in the water, you almost certainly aren't medium speed.

Mybestusername · 01/11/2024 20:53

I'm fairly slow by medium lane standards - I don't like to put my head in the water - but I am faster by a long way than everyone in the slow lane, some of whom are barely moving. So I swim in the medium lane but I give way to those who are faster.
If someone is overtaking everyone else, they should move up a lane.

BruFord · 01/11/2024 21:09

I agree that you should go in the lane that matches your speed. I’m usually medium, although if I’m tired, I might go in the slow lane.

I’ve also experienced fast swimmers in the medium lane and it’s very annoying. As for having a chat in the lanes…why don’t they just move to another part of the pool? The lanes are for ppl who want to exercise, not natter!

Swimmers’ rage definitely exists! 😂

millymae · 01/11/2024 21:12

The pool I swim in has strict rules about lane swimming and the lifeguards quickly put a stop to anyone swimming the wrong way. They are also pretty quick to direct people to the appropriate lane for their speed.
I’m mostly a slow lane swimmer but occasionally venture into the middle one if it’s quiet. I wouldn’t dream of doing so if it’s busy because I’d hate to frustrate those who are faster than me like the really really slow swimmers frustrate me.
Do I ever suffer swimmers rage as opposed to just frustration? Yes I do when the butterfly stroke swimmer gets into the fast lane and causes waves like a rough sea every time his arms hit the water.

Wordsmithery · 01/11/2024 23:49

I call it lane rage and yes, it's definitely a thing.
Like on a motorway, if you're going faster you switch lanes.

Gatecrashermum · 01/11/2024 23:56

I am amazed to hear this arseholish behaviour is from a man

Swimming rage definitely a thing. What annoys me most of all is the really splashy swimmers - butterfly stroke yes (that stroke should be banned in public pools) but also the front crawl/back crawl swimmers who splash everyone else. Swimming that splashily is terrible form and very inefficient too.
