I'm sure this is a stupid question but I would know if Dc had broken their arm right?

DD was playing in the garden on the trampoline (all has safety nets etc). She came running in crying saying she had fallen and hurt her arm. The way she reacted was just strange compared to how she normally is when she's hurt, her cry was different and she's very shakey. I've moved her wrist around and she says that doesn't hurt, but she keeps moving her arm in to different positions like she's trying to get comfortable. When I touch it she says it doesn't hurt but she says it hurts inside. I'm guessing if it was broken I wouldn't be able to touch it and it would hurt when I moved her wrist? Not sure if we need to get it checked out or wait an hour or so to see if it's just the shock of falling that's upset her

Sounds like it could be broken, my daughter was similar when she broke hers. I'd take her to A&E.

Saschka · 01/11/2024 11:15

Take her to get it xrayed - I have worked in A&E and if it’s a green stick fracture it is not always obvious like it would be with an adult (there have been kids I definitely didn’t think had broken their arm when I examined them, who definitely had when I xrayed them)

Ahhhhhbisto · 01/11/2024 11:18

My DD fractured her wrist but her only complaint was a graze on her elbow.

It was only observing the way she was moving it/not using it that made me take her to a&e. She wasn't complaining it hurt, could wiggle fingers, bend wrist ect, very tiny amount of swelling. The one thing she couldn't really do was grip/hold things.

Sorry but I would take her to get checked out if I were you. Good luck.

FadedRed · 01/11/2024 11:19

Please stop ‘moving her arm around’ and take her to A&E (or Minor Injury Unit if you have one locally). Support her arm by putting her in a jacket or fleece, with the arm inside the jacket (not in the sleeve iyswim) and fastening the jacket to hold the injured arm by her body, put a cushion on her knee in the car to support her arm. She could have a fracture and it not be obvious without an X-ray.

Oh and it was a buckle fracture.

LoremIpsumCici · 01/11/2024 11:20

I’d take her to A&E. A break could be in just one of the two forearm bones.

halloweenismyjam · 01/11/2024 11:21

Thanks all, on the way to get it checked now

I'd be going to A&E for sure.

SilverChampagne · 01/11/2024 11:21

No, get it seen to. And for the love of God stop twisting it about! You don’t know what extra damage you’re doing.

niadainud · 01/11/2024 11:21

I don't think you would necessarily know, as a) you're not a doctor (I assume) and b) it's not your arm.

northernballer · 01/11/2024 11:21

My son broke his leg and I didn't realise immediately so I always get them seem if im doubt now.

Hope all goes well OP.

LoremIpsumCici · 01/11/2024 11:22

Oh and your wrist doesn’t hurt when you’ve broken your arm.

SoporificLettuce · 01/11/2024 11:26

Stop messing with it and get her to A&E. It could well be broken.

As a child I broke both my ulna and radius very badly in a horse riding accident and had zero pain due to shock. It was only because it was flapping about like a second wrist that anyone else realised I’d broken it. That and my extreme pallor. The pain came later. Was in plaster for nearly a year.

V0xPopuli · 01/11/2024 11:27

No. I saw a child break his arm. You can't tell easily without an xray

Pallisers · 01/11/2024 11:32

We missed a break for a day. In fairness the school nurse missed it too. When I brought her to the orthopaedic guy the next day I felt terrible - he told me he had missed a break in his own kid!

TickingAlongNicely · 01/11/2024 11:35

My mum thought O was pretending when I broke my arm as apparently I was a "drama queen". She still feels a bit guilty about it..

My four year old only cried for a minute or so when she broke hers. We took her to the hospital as she was quiet.

Stormyweatheroutthere · 01/11/2024 11:36

I had a green stick fracture.. School secretary told me to stop crying...
Didn't even take me to the school nurse... Or ring my dm. Because she could apparently manipulate it just fine...

magicstar1 · 01/11/2024 11:38

I’m glad you’re getting it checked. I broke a bone a few years ago and the x-ray revealed it was a rebreak. It happened over 40 years ago when I fell off a wall and they thought it was just a sprain. We never realised it was broken.

Mandylovescandy · 01/11/2024 11:42

DC had a buckle fracture and school missed it (tbf happened very near the end of the day) and he switched between playing fine and being a bit extra snuggly. My DP realised and got him to A&E. Think you should get out checked

GettingStuffed · 01/11/2024 11:45

My sister broke her arm twice. The first time she didn't seem to be in much pain but the following day she had a marrow rather than an arm. The second time she was in agony after falling off a horse.

The first one was treated the day after she broke it. The second she went straight to A&E.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/11/2024 11:48

For some reason in kids broken arms can seem less obvious. If she'd broken her shoulder you'd probably know as the whole arm wouldn't really work or be able to grip with hand, lift arm etc without extreme pain. But a lower part could be.
Take her to minor injuries and they will X ray it. If it is indeed needing surgery or hospital treatment they refer you to A&E.

FelixtheAardvark · 01/11/2024 11:49

No. I broke my arm just above the wrist when I was 9 and for two days my Mum thought it was just a badly sprained wrist.

Finally took me to Casualty, had an x-ray and found it was a "greenstick" fracture.

ElaborateCushion · 01/11/2024 11:52

I had exactly the same when I was a child. Playing in the garden, tripped and fell, went indoors and told my mum my arm hurt. She also looked and couldn't see anything, so sat me down and left me to rest. Came back half an hour later and my arm had ballooned. Turns out I'd broken my elbow pretty badly and ended up having to stay in hospital overnight as they were concerned that I might have nerve and/or blood flow damage.

Glad you're off to A&E OP and hope it isn't anything more than a bad bruise, but you're right to get it checked out.

vegaspot · 01/11/2024 11:57

It depends what type of #and where it is.I was an AE nurse and missed my daughters # for 24 hours. Hope you get seen in AE soon !
