I'm sure this is a stupid question but I would know if Dc had broken their arm right?

DD was playing in the garden on the trampoline (all has safety nets etc). She came running in crying saying she had fallen and hurt her arm. The way she reacted was just strange compared to how she normally is when she's hurt, her cry was different and she's very shakey. I've moved her wrist around and she says that doesn't hurt, but she keeps moving her arm in to different positions like she's trying to get comfortable. When I touch it she says it doesn't hurt but she says it hurts inside. I'm guessing if it was broken I wouldn't be able to touch it and it would hurt when I moved her wrist? Not sure if we need to get it checked out or wait an hour or so to see if it's just the shock of falling that's upset her

I broke my own arm once and didn't realise for a week

If in doubt get it checked out -which I know you are doing

Hopefully the wait won't be too long for you both

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/11/2024 12:05

Also glad you’ve taken her to A and E.

Im afraid you have to with these things.

It does strike me that it’s a testament to how much damage has been done to the NHS that we’re all so reluctant to go in, when it’s necessary.

Obviously some people go in on a piss take, and bring too many family members etc, but what I see more than ever is people trying to ignore actual injuries because the 5/6 hour wait is so horrendous.

AnonyMouse80 · 01/11/2024 12:07

No not necessarily. My parents are a GP and nurse and they didn’t realise my sister had broken her wrist until one of them grabbed it a few days later to stop her tripping over and she screamed with pain.

FloofPaws · 01/11/2024 12:07

It can be difficult to tell, my DB is a doctor and checked my sons arm
When he fell off a climbing frame, he thought it was ok but said to check it in a while (we were just leaving) and within an hour it was clear both arms felt different to each other and I knew it was broken - DH and he went to a&E and yep 👍
Take her to get a quick x ray

MabelMaybe · 01/11/2024 12:08

I fell down stairs as a DC and, when it still hurt next morning was given the choice by my mum of going to hospital or going to school. School was swimming lessons, which I hated, so I opted to go to the hospital, and came home with a cast on. My mother was mortified that she'd failed to notice I'd broken my arm. Unless it was a serious frcture (arm at very odd angle, bone sticking out etc.) I wouldn't say you always know, espcecially with children, because green stick fractures don't break all the way through.

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 01/11/2024 12:09

When I was three years old my dad insisted that my arm couldn't possibly be broken and I was making a fuss. Guess what? It was broken and it upsets me that one of my earliest memories is not being believed. Not saying you're being equally dismissive but no, you wouldn't necessarily just "know" so best thing to do is get it checked out.

DreadPirateRobots · 01/11/2024 12:11

My DC broke their elbow in a fall as a toddler, but were calm and fine initially until a grownup helped them take their jumper off and they screamed.

Scutterbug · 01/11/2024 12:12

Glad you are going to A and E. My daughter broke her arm when she was 3 and it took us 24 hours to realise. Felt awful!

halloweenismyjam · 01/11/2024 12:37

Just had an X-ray and they've given her some calpol for that pain, just waiting for the results now

Xiaoxiong · 01/11/2024 12:43

Ah I'm glad you've had an x-ray.

DS2 walked around with a broken collarbone for nearly a week before I took him for an x-ray! He said it hurt, but not more than he had complained about a bad bruise or something and calpol seemed to settle it down. You could have knocked me over with a feather when they told me it was actually broken!!!

gamerchick · 01/11/2024 12:45

No. My daughter broke her wrist and carried on doing handstands. I got the worst looks when taking her to a&e a couple of days later

TwinklyAmberOrca · 01/11/2024 12:46

My best mates daughter tripped over getting off the trampoline. It didn't hurt to touch, no bruises. Just sore and felt funny. 2 days later it still felt funny so she took it to be looked at and it was broken!

She had no idea. Thankfully they mend quickly and it was just 4 weeks in a cast.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 01/11/2024 13:04

Hard to tell, my son's friend fell and hurt his arm, even his GP father said it wasn't broken for a day or 2, went to a&E and it was indeed broken.

Alondra · 01/11/2024 13:05

I had a hairline broken ulna and carried on working for 3 weeks until I realised I didn't have a full functional arm and the pain when I tried to fully stretch it was not normal. Had X rays which were inconclusive and my GP asked for a scan that showed the fracture.

A hairline fracture will give her pain in specific positions but she'll adjust her arm to more comfortable ones to her. It's still a fracture needed to be treated.

Alondra · 01/11/2024 13:18

One way to know if she has a fracture is to get her to fully stretch her arm and rotate it with her palm up. Then take it up and rotate it again, palm up.

If she can do it but is sore, it's unlikely to be a fracture. If the pain is so strong she can't do it, it's likely a fracture.

CheekySwan · 01/11/2024 13:50

Hope she is OK

halloweenismyjam · 01/11/2024 13:58

Two small fractures in her wrist. They've put a splint on it that she needs to wear all the time for the next 4 weeks and no sport or anything for 6 weeks. Glad we got it checked!

My GP friend didn't realise her teenager had broken his arm recently, and only took him to minor injuries when he couldn't straighten it the next day.

MrSeptember · 01/11/2024 14:01

Good result. I was goign to ask how old she is because I think often children don't have the language to describe the pain necessarily.

WorriedRelative · 01/11/2024 14:12

Not without an x-ray.

When I was a young teenager, I fell a distance during a hobby, I got up to continue, but it hurt to lift my arm above shoulder height. Coach did not consider it serious enough to call my parents to pick me up early, so I stayed doing modified activities for a few hours.

There was no visible bruising or deformity.

Parents told me it was just bruised and suggested a bubble bath. The next morning as I struggled to get dressed Mum decided to take me to the GP, who said "I don't think it's broken but you should get an x-ray to be on the safe side". This view was echoed by the doctor at A&E.

Following the first set of X-rays, the view was probably not broken, but we could do with an extra view to be sure.

The second set of x-rays were done, and the conclusion was that there were three fractures!

FadedRed · 01/11/2024 18:22

Good you got it sorted, Op, this sort of thing can lead to problems in the future if not treated promptly. Hope your little one is feeling a bit better now and recovers quickly.

edited for typo.

Futurethinking2026 · 01/11/2024 18:27

Glad you got her checked out.

We took my DS to check his dislocated finger was back in place properly after a rugby match. Guy came out and said, what you here for again, so I said to check his finger is back in place fully as it dislocated but when back. He said, I need to do more images for that but he’s got a break in his hand! We would not have taken him at all if it wasn’t for his finger.

lanthanum · 01/11/2024 18:32

My mum was once uncertain about how seriously to take my brother's sore arm. Since he was filthy from playing in the garden all day, she popped him in the bath before deciding to set off to A&E. It was probably a good move, as it did mean he was clean when they put the plaster cast on.

Oceangreyscale · 01/11/2024 18:33

Well I know an actual surgeon who didn't realise his daughter had broken her arm for 5 days so...

BoudiccasBangles · 01/11/2024 18:41

Well done OP. I’ve been to Minor Injuries a couple of times for DCs when I didn’t think it was serious and they sent me straight to A&E - we’re very rural, long drive to hospital so it’s always MIU first if not obviously serious. It’s hard to tell when they’re young. Hope she’s feeling better soon.
