To ask your views on fireworks?

I am sure there will be many on MN who have views, if threads in previous years are an indication. So I'll start the discussion here.

My opinion is that there should be designated days only, and organised displays. Probably no more than five or six such days a year. Allows for celebration, reduces possibility of injury, and warning so you can be indoors when they happen and protect any person or animal.

The government could pass legislation further restricting the use of fireworks, but I doubt that would stop the nuisance fireworks.

Shodan · 01/11/2024 08:53

Where I live there seem to be fireworks displays almost year-round: weddings at the nearby hotel, Diwali, Halloween, Guy Fawkes, New Year's Eve, Christmas... even in the height of summer where it doesn't get dark until 10 pm, which of course means some very late night noise.

I do love fireworks, but I think there should be some limit on when they can be set off, and when they can be bought. And maybe some kind of mandatory notifications to local residents of the date/time you're planning a display, so that they can bring in pets/use earplugs.

Auburngal · 01/11/2024 08:53

I think fireworks should not be sold the general public. As get idiots randomly set off fireworks all day, including during the day. This frightens animals. Only sold to organisers.

Also doing your own firework display at home is more expensive. To get a reasonable amount of fireworks, expect to spend at least £70 plus another £15-20 on food.

The firework display about 2 miles from here is £35 for a family ticket up to 5 people (under 5s are free) and give them some food before you leave, spend another £40 on snacks and drinks (yes inflated prices). Fireworks are much better and everyone can enjoy them. As at home, whoever is in charge of setting up fireworks and setting them off doesn't see much of them.

When my previous work used to sell fireworks, it was a right pain as you had to ask customers who purchased them to leave straight away due to the licence (I think). Then got customers coming in carrying fireworks purchased from other shops - such as B&Q who are a 5 min walk from my previous work, again had to ask them to leave. Got so much abuse from them.

HousefulofIkea · 01/11/2024 08:53

Ive never understood why people think fireworks are such an issue, those calling for only a handful of days, where do you live that fireworks happen more than that now? Every year this threads pop up the same week in November - the only week all year when there's noticeable fireworks, NYE notwithstanding. Seriously stop whinging and think about people in warzones listening to the sound of terrifying rockets every night.

Theres basically ONE week, maybe 8-9 days, in November when they happen a lot. Depending on the dates of Diwali and Bonfire Night, they are spread out a bit.

They are a traditional part of celebrating these events and if you can't cope with a few fireworks a handful of nights in November you must be such a misery guts!

afaloren · 01/11/2024 08:54

I used to love them when I was a child but I hate them now I’m an adult with a dog. He’s absolutely terrified. I’d ban them altogether tbh but if we must have them it should be organised displays only and on set occasions.

ExtraOnions · 01/11/2024 08:54

“Bad for the Environment” “Bad for wildlife” “cause injury” “cause death”

On all of those …. Not as much as the Cars that you drive

They need to only be silent

Last year, near us, they did an organised “silent” firework display, and there were so many complaints (about the lack of noise - apparently it wasn’t “exciting” enough) that this year they’ll be going back to a noisy display again. I’m absolutely with people who say organised displays only - any A and E department would agree: children are disfigured for life through firework accidents.

I like them, but I think that the selling restrictions should go back to how it was when I was younger. On sale for the week before Nov 5th and that is it.

That wouldn't be popular here, Diwali is quite a big thing.

I was 17 when a boyfriend bought me my first fire works so I think I probably like them more than most animals.

I think the ones the general public can buy should be small and quiet.

blobby10 · 01/11/2024 08:58

I have fond memories of setting off fireworks in my grandparents garden (big one in the open countryside) but in the 1970s I'm sure they were more of a pop and fizzle than the huge bangs we get nowadays.

Although I love to see them I do wish the modern ones were quieter and would definitely support a ban on anything but organised displays and also have them limited to Diwali and 5th November. None of this NYE crap or 'sometime in the vicinity of 5th November'!

Flaskfan · 01/11/2024 08:58

They're a pain in the arse round here. I love fireworks and a full on display, but the last 2 weeks there have been random ones going off every day. Sometimes in the middle of the day, which seems utterly pointless. It's fairly obvious a lot of it is kids pissing about, because you hear between 1 and 4 bangs, then nothing.

Used to be a massive public display round here, but it's been cancelled due to safety concerns- too many people and too many dickheads.

Auburngal · 01/11/2024 08:58

GreenSedan · 01/11/2024 08:31

They terrify wildlife, cause fires and accidents, and leave detritus in streets, parks, and green spaces.

What's not to love?

My DF was driving back from work about 15-17 years ago about this time of year and heard a thud on the roof as driving through a residential area. On getting home, he looked at his (company) car roof and there was a dent with a few scorch marks on it plus damaged the car aerial. Dread to think what would have happened if the firework landed on the windscreen.

sharpclawedkitten · 01/11/2024 08:59

I don't think fireworks should be permitted for private use at all.

They should only be permitted for organised displays, and only the silent ones. Do they need to be so loud that the windows of your house shake?

SlugLettuce · 01/11/2024 09:00

Love them, the display here is a great community event, always busy, we meet up with friends, get something from the food stands and generally pop to the local pub afterwards.

But Diwali IS in the week before Nov 5th - it was yesterday! If it falls earlier, the date could be adjusted accordingly. But as I don't think fireworks should be sold for private use at all, it shouldn't actually be an issue - people could buy them for an organised Diwali event in their local area. Anyway it's the festival of Lights, not Bangs!

Organised displays are great, it's the use by individuals that should be stopped.

TickingAlongNicely · 01/11/2024 09:02

Organised events only. A week around Bonfire night/Diwali, and NYE. Extra special licenses for other eents

Our local councilgives grants to small organised displays to encourage people to attend them rather than setting their own off their own.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/11/2024 09:02

Love them!

Agree

The restriction to organised displays only virtually killed bonfire night in Australia.

Edited

Bonfire night should only be for organised displays. Not randoms setting off rockets in the middle of Residential areas.

Longhotsummers · 01/11/2024 09:05

Either silent or organised displays only.
I love them but hate the selfishness of people who use them without thought eg going to bed last night at 11pm and there were many going off. There’s just no need for this.

TickingAlongNicely · 01/11/2024 09:06

The most impressive fireworks I've ever seen is NYE in Germany. Its pretty much the only time its legal. There's some around 8pm for children... but between midnight and 12.30 its absolutely crazy!!

ExtraOnions · 01/11/2024 09:08

“Organised displays only” .. lovely if you live near one… or you don’t have any mobility restrictions or disabilities that will stop you going.

That’s interesting to know they’re banned in Dublin - is that banned for private use? I get it doesn’t stop them completely but at least they’re trying!

Here is info on the law. You can apply for a licnece for organised displays. Unfortunately with everything you ban it sends them underground so you can always find someone selling them illegally.

Fireworks: the law

Only the least dangerous fireworks are allowed to be sold to the public. The Gardaí now have the power to make arrests in relation to the possession of unlicensed fireworks.

I like them. I don’t like organised displays. I don’t like huge noisy ones or standing about in a muddy field with strangers with arseholes trying to sell me stuff. I want a few Roman candles and rockets in my garden. I think the noise should be reduced because they are stupidly loud now and from a social pov the noise is the big issue. I’d be fine with massive ones needing a licence but not the tiny ones. My dog isn’t keen but he’s not keen on a lot of things.
