To be tired of clothes shops selling so many brands other than their own

Does anyone else get sick of visiting the website of a shop they like only to find a search for anything brings up all kinds of random brands like Long Tall Sally, Mountain Warehouse and Roman. I know you can filter but it’s really tiresome when actually you just want Next or M&S or whoever clothes. I wish it wasn’t a thing now 🙄

I realise Next and M&S own a lot of these brands and I get that the logistics mean it's easier for it all to be on one site. But I think it dilutes them as brands - the point about Boux Avenue above is exactly what I mean, it's a very different customer.

I'd prefer if there were tabs for the different brands on the one site, it's easier and more transparent but I'm no IT expert so may well be tricky and costly!

I like it. I have always liked John Lewis, but there were certain brands of theirs I adore and certain I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. I now get to look at multiple brands on M&S and see stuff I wouldn't otherwise know about. I've never had any trouble filtering by brand and price point parameters as needed.

Lyannaa · 01/11/2024 10:38

I quite like it but I think unfortunately, it's a reflection of how things are. Companies may fold if they don't do this. Then you wouldn't get their stuff either.

Neighbours87 · 01/11/2024 10:42

I really like that so many brands sell through next. There’s a store near my work and it’s great for free click and collect and returns

thatone · 01/11/2024 10:42

YANBU OP It bothers me too - particularly as some of the brands sold at M&S are so much more expensive.

SunQueen24 · 01/11/2024 10:46

You can easily filter by brand.

You can put a filter on for individual brands.

ZippyDoodle · 01/11/2024 16:39

M&S filtering doesn't work.

I've just filtered on Pyjamas then Autograph and it's come up with a load of bras and lingerie.

Plus you need to know all the separate brands within that brand; Autograph, Rosie by M&S, etc.

There is no brand listing for just M&S. Where are all the own brand items?

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 01/11/2024 16:49

This was very noticeable when maternity shopping, everyone just stocks Mamalicious these days! There was very little outside of their main ranges.

I get it if there's something really niche, like a sports shoe at M&S for example, but not for just bog standard clothes!

Seashellssanctuary · 01/11/2024 16:51

They need to do it to survive as a business.

Just pray that supermarkets never do it 😃

AngryLikeHades · 01/11/2024 16:53

It's generally failing brands being bought up by others in the hope of sometimes, avoiding bankruptcy.
Some of these brands can't afford to keep the physical shops open.

Needmorelego · 01/11/2024 16:54

@Seashellssanctuary supermarkets already do.
At least TU and Asda do.

yukikata · 01/11/2024 16:56

I like it because when people buy me Next vouchers for Christmas I can spend them on brands I actually like 😄

It's not hard to filter.

Please tell me how you filter M&S pyjamas.

ShamblesRock · 01/11/2024 17:33

Ooh, interesting about LTS, I was getting them through M&co, so worthwhile knowing I can go elsewhere too.

I get them for my eldest DD, her height does not come from me.

A lot of it is called Collection

Next and M&S are the absolute worst for this. It’s just too random getting loads of different brands at once. Sainsbury’s has started it too.

And you can't just filter by marks and Spencer's. It's autograph, etc. It drives me mad.

Tooffless · 01/11/2024 17:41

Next is the worst. I want a coat but if I go on nexts website I will be faced by 6 million coats. I just can't.

ZippyDoodle · 01/11/2024 17:46

@Nasyan

How do you filter on that then? Collection or M&S Collection isn't in the list of brands.

It's not great if you have to ask on a forum how to filter on the actual brand of the shop.

ZippyDoodle · 01/11/2024 17:47

Perhaps this is all part of the master plan to get people back into stores.

DysonSphere · 01/11/2024 17:53

I don't see what an established key brand like M&S has to gain from obscuring it's own unique offerings under a mountain of other brands. Can someone explain the thinking?

I already detest online shopping - except for Vinted weirdly - I get scrolling fatigue really quickly so I absolutely despise clothing websites only allowing me to load all of 10 items a page whilst offering me 1,234,567 pages of clothing items. Midi skirts 40,000 results! Am I expected to make it past page 6?

What I actually do now is just type in the description of the item I want by brand in Google or Google images. And wallah! I get a page of offerings, so I don't need to faff with the clunky, insensitive, ineffcient search engine on the actual website, as google has already narrowed it down for me.

Whereas I would find that tedious.
Going out tomorrow night and late Wednesday evening I decided to have a look for something to wear, had a very specific idea of what I wanted, within in minutes i had found a pair of trousers by Reiss and a top from Mint Velvet on Next, both delivered today.

The choice can be overwhelming, thats true but I just deselect brands I know I don’t want, including next own brand as It’s not a brand I buy / wear.
