Diarrhoea for a week

Please move to the appropriate area, if not allowed on AIBU

I have been having diarrhoea, and bad stomach pains for a week now.
I have always suffered with IBS and triggered by anxiety or generally just comes on with no warning. Usually I can distract myself and play a word game or something on my phone to keep my brain busy and not think about the pain. Normally, I will get an upset stomach once or twice a week and diarrhoea perhaps once a week .

About 4 weeks ago, i had the flu the worst ever had it.after I shook that off I had a sickness feeling like pregnant. But definitely not pregnant.
I was having the worst nausea, tiredness and feeling crap. After a week plus, that passed. But since last Friday, I have just been having the worst bouts of diarrhoea.

It usually happens in the middle of the night, which have been rare, but mostly in the afternoon before I eat and especially after I eat and again in the evening. Worse so, when I eat. And again very close together sometimes 10 minutes after the other.

I have an OK diet.
Don't eat as much fruit and veg as I should and have cut down loads on chocolate lately as I am a.major chocolate maniac. I have chocolate usually digestives or bourbons after lunch or dinner. I do eat chocolate everyday. But I try to eat apples and grapes and I mostly have veg in my meals, salads, stir fries, veggie rice etc, I eat only chicken and fish. I have looked up campylobacter. Not sure if that's that. No one else is sick and we are a big family of 8, so usually when we get sick it goes round instantly and we are all lumbered with it.

I only get the bad stomach as well when I'm.about to have the diarrhoea and bad gas. Meaning I'm pumping loudly and randomly which is embarrassing. I have 6 children and love to go put on nature walks and to the park and am freaking out to go out incase it comes on.

My husband is adamant its the chocolate and has asked me to give it up. Because he thinks it's not helping my health. I've had zero chocolate today and still have had diarrhoea three times.
I had my smear booked in today and cancelled it again because im scared if I go to the medical center, again I will have diarrhoea.

Feel so rough as well, literally like nausea as well and just feeling crap. And its getting me down. The stomach ache only happens just before and during the diarrhoea.
Anyone know what it is.

Have you made an appointment with your GP? That seems like the best thing to do.

Moier · 31/10/2024 17:55

Definitely GP.
Might be an underlying concern.
You could try some imodium and get some diarolytes .

Judgejudysno1fan · 01/11/2024 07:10

Well Its been 15hrs since the last diarrhoea so I'm hoping it's stopped now

Thank you both for your replies. If it continues today then I will contact my GP.

Have you been ill? I got this after covid and it turns out that post-covid diarrhoea is a thing!

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 01/11/2024 07:43

I suggest stopping the digestive biscuits as well. They have an effect on your digestion (hence the name) so its worth cutting them out for a while. And maybe trying some probiotics ?

Sepoctnov · 01/11/2024 07:44

Go and see your GP surely is the best thing to do.

Food intolerance?

I wouldn’t think it’s the chocolate. Have you actually been diagnosed with IBS? They can refer you to a dietician who might suggest a low FODMAP diet.

Papergirl1968 · 05/11/2024 17:04

I had viral gastroenteritis in the summer for three weeks. Really watery, uncontrollable diarrhoea and was sick a few times too - projectile vomiting. But the diarrhoea was the worst.
I’d feel better for a day or two and then it would start again.
I don’t think it’s necessarily the chocolate or your diet but I would stick to really plain foods for a couple of days - toast etc.

This current strain of covid I had it for 2 weeks diarrhoea
