Something not working in holiday rental - annoyance or money back?

oneveryannoyingthing · 31/10/2024 10:12

Currently staying in a holiday rental in Devon, due to leave tomorrow.

The hot tap in the kitchen hasn't worked at all since we've been here, it's a Quooker as the main tap, so given it is not working we haven't had any hot water in the kitchen at all. Not even luke warm. Stone cold.

We've tried doing a reset on it a few times but not had any luck. Raised it with the holiday let company on Tuesday, on Wednesday they said they would send someone to look at it and to leave the key for them. It's now Thursday and no sign of being fixed before we leave tomorrow, despite chasing.

We paid a decent amount for this place as it's on the higher end spec.

But we've not been able to wash up without boiling the kettle several times (it's a huge sink) and need to go to a different floor to wash hands etc. Hot water is fine in the bathrooms.

Would you ask for any money off given the inconvenience and fact we paid for a 'premium' rental. Or just suck it up as one of those annoying things?

Was there a dishwasher?

User364837 · 31/10/2024 10:15

Personally no that wouldn’t be a massive issue to me warranting money back

TeenLifeMum · 31/10/2024 10:17

I would expect hot water in a kitchen as a basic so yes I’d expect a small refund. Working round inconveniences at home is very different to a holiday where you want to relax and recharge without plumbing issues.

Diaryfear · 31/10/2024 10:17

I might ask some financial acknowledgement that things weren't perfect but I wouldn't push it.

Magnastorm · 31/10/2024 10:17

Personally that seems like a pretty minor inconvienience and I probably wouldn't bother my arse to chase it, but it's really up to you if you feel like it's worth kicking up a fuss. Has it really stopped you enjoying your holiday that much?

You might get a small amount of money back, eventually, but for the time and energy it would take to do so I wouldn't bother.

FlingThatCarrot · 31/10/2024 10:18

You can wash hands with cold water. If there was a dishwasher than no. If there wasn't a dishwasher then maybe a £20 goodwill.

Was there a dishwasher?

Yes, a slimline one which a)doesn't wash well and b) in any case wouldn't fit any pots and pans etc

Was there a kettle?

If there is a kettle and a dishwasher just suck it up I think.

WimpoleHat · 31/10/2024 10:20

is there a dishwasher? Was the Quooker tap a big part of the property advertising? If there’s a dishwasher and there’s just an extra feature that isn’t working, I wouldn’t expect compensation? I’m surprised the Quooker tap completely supersedes the usual hot water system, though? We have one and it is entirely separate; if it fails, we don’t have on demand boiling water, but would still have “normal” hot water.

oneveryannoyingthing · 31/10/2024 10:21

I'm genuinely interested as I'm in no way feeling all guns blazing etc, but yes it has inconvenienced us as washing up takes 5 times as long and I would have expected hot water in a kitchen as a basic and not to waste our time when we're meant to be here relaxing.

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, and certainly won't be 'pushing it'...just feels a bit galling to pay so much and not have hot water to wash up in. 1st world problems I know!!

5 times as long? How many times do you fill the sink!

This is my thoughts!

Did you contact the people you rented from and tell them there was a problem?

Caspianberg · 31/10/2024 10:29

Was it only in the kitchen sink? As in you have had hot water in bathrooms to wash hands and shower?

And you had a kettle?

If so no, I wouldn’t worry about it. It unlikely it could have been repaired during your stay without a faff and mess anyway, so it’s easier to just say it’s unfortunate and carry on. Otherwise a repair man there in and out for 1-2 days would have been worse imo.

Also if you had a dishwasher, then surely one kettle of hot would be enough to wash a few large pots

Well on the basis they said they would send someone to fix it one would assume yes.

The kettle is shite and takes an age to boil a full one

OP posts:
buttonsB4 · 31/10/2024 10:30

I wouldn't expect a refund, but I would leave a review which explains that there was no hot water downstairs and the repeated promises to fix it were broken.

It has been a hassle for you and may indicate that if there was a more serious problem (say the boiler broke) they wouldn't swiftly repair that for a future guest, so worth flagging up.

Quooker not part of the advertising but we're fine not to have it...just would expect hot water in a kitchen. Only temperature that comes out is freezing cold.

They may have had to order a new part. Not everything can be instantly repaired.

Which is fair enough but it doesn’t sound like the op was updated, which would have been good customer service. Surely they should have acknowledged the inconvience and updated op. We once rented a holiday cottage and the hob wasn’t working, they got us a table top one whilst they got it repaired and kept us informed.

TinkerTiger · 31/10/2024 10:36

Sounds like you've created a problem through your own choice of how you wash up.

No need to fill a whole sink, run the water and wash the dishes? I don't use hot water to wash my dishes or my hands Confused

ForeveraBluebird · 31/10/2024 10:37

Only had hot water in our house for about five years. I love it , enjoy watching the water come out of the tap , hot.
Sorry to derail your thread Op , hope you enjoyed your holiday.

Ted27 · 31/10/2024 10:38

@oneveryannoyingthing
In the summer I paid £850 for a caravan for a week.
I had to have maintenance out every day to sort out the boiler as we had no hot water.
There were a couple of other minor issues which I would have let go but taken together and the cost of the van I did make a complaint and said I was looking for compensation ( not.vouchers for another holiday). To be honest I was thinking about £100. They gave me 50% back.
I'm quite easy going, I don't expect things to be perfect but for £850 I had certain expectations - and waiting for maintainence guys at 9pm wasn't one of them, not to mention the time taken in phone calls etc.
So yes I would complain
