Anyone here not answering door today

I am going to switch off doorbell late afternoon. I have never done trick or treating as a child nor gave sweets to kids.

I just don't want my evening to be disturbed by the constant ringing of my doorbell. First few years of living at my home didn't get anyone as its a newbuild and people didn't know to go to the doors, you walk around the back of the block of flats and maisonettes.

Wonder how many people with Ring or similar doorbells will tell the kids and chavs to go away, politely or rudely?

I don't leave a pumpkin out now so we shouldn't have any callers. We joined in wholeheartedly when our kids were young and it was mainly their classmates that came calling.

As they stopped going out themselves though, numbers of callers dwindled so much that i had tons of sweets and no callers!!

So i stopped buying treats and don't put a pumpkin out now. Our house is in the corner so it tends to get ignored😪

That's a very unusual take on things in Ireland, do you mind if I ask your faith? It's a view I'd associate with the types in America who ban Harry Potter and such. I think Irish Catholicism and Irish culture in general have never really treated the dead as something to fear.

I’m a Christian.
I don’t fear the dead, I only fear, in the sense of reverence, the Lord and seek to follow Him in all things.

Itonlytakesone · 31/10/2024 14:34

@Auburngal
If you don't have pumpkins/ decorations outside I doubt anyone will bother going anywhere near your house I wouldn't worry

TickTickTockTock · 31/10/2024 14:44

We did it when the kids were little and they loved it. Now it’s just us. I don’t decorate or have a pumpkin but we have chocolates if anyone knocks.

My kids stopped when they were around 10/11 as they felt they were too big to go. But now they are at university, goodness it feels bigger than ever. They need more than one costume for all the different parties!

What denomination? Sorry not meaning to be nosy and obviously no need to answer, I've just never really heard Irish people speak in that way. A few up here in NI, but they'd be protestants of the fire and brimstone type and unlikely to self describe as Irish. Grin

Love Halloween, and will always make an effort to make up little bags for my nephew & nieces (and any other kids close to our family like neighbors kids) - however, my dogs would be barking all night if I left the doorbell on, and I honestly couldn’t be arsed to open the door over and over again. No point in leaving a bowl of sweets on the doorstep as my neighborhood leads into another (rougher) estate and you get 15-17 year olds running around stealing decorations, sweets, etc. Also suffering a chronic illness flare up, so all in all, this year is not for me. Next year though, I’ll make the effort!!

It’ll be door locked, lights off & horror movies on for me 👍

ROI here, and that poster is definitely in the minority. The minority known as “fun sponges” or “craictose intolerants”

As my nanny used to say “Sher a few demons runnin round for the night is nothing. Just get your ash comb for the banshee & your crucifix out for the vampires, light your candles and you’ll be grand!”

Halloween traditions are rooted in necromancy (making contact with the dead, seances etc) and divination (fortune-telling).

Neither practice is something I wish to have any connection to, nor would I wish to unwittingly encourage others to engage, even as “just a bit of fun”.

We didn’t think that deep about it when I was wee. A quick chorus of ‘ye canny shove yer granny off the bus’ then home to eat your spoils 🤷‍♀️ simpler times…

BarbaraHoward · 31/10/2024 15:04

Craictose intolerant 🤣

I'm from Dublin and agree btw. Just surprised by the dark take on things. IME (as a Catholic atheist Grin), spirits have always been kind of viewed as benign things to be welcomed if anyone believes in them.

Mostly Halloween is about little kids in witch hats though IME.

Spent the afternoon trying to find some brack in the local shops with no joy :'(

Sorry, I’m Irish and I know what’s behind Oíche Shamhna aka Halloween, so I would be more than happy if it died out.

Also Irish, also know the history, and would still rather a demon showed up at my door than a Christian Brother

no Brack?! Blasphemy! You need to have that little fake gold ring that turns your finger green to ward off evil spirits - and little shits in Spider-Man costumes that look far more impressive than the black sacks & rash inducing wigs we had to wear!!!

Apparently it's not a thing up here in NI?! I'm in a very Protestant town though, need to ask PILs if it was a thing for them in more Catholic places.

DungareesAndTrombones · 31/10/2024 15:13

I won't be as it drives the dog crackers and quite frankly I cba. Around us they only seem to knock on decorated houses anyway.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 31/10/2024 15:22

No. The day can fuck off for all I care.

Coolblur · 31/10/2024 15:30

We've a dilemma with this. Normally we do answer as DS goes out guising so it's only right that we answer the door to others. Tonight though DS will be out at football training, and I've been unwell so the house is not decorated. I'm feeling kind of bad not to participate tbh

No reason to feel bad about not doing Halloween visitors, hope you feel better soon.

Or we struggle with social anxiety or PTSD and really don't like answering the door to complete strangers who are hammering the door

MaloryJones · 31/10/2024 15:47

Couldyounot · 31/10/2024 07:58

Same. And took the bowl, to boot.

Couldn't leave them out round here either or they would be gone in one go.

One year my cousins pumpkin was stolen from her front doorstep. I told her to look on the bright side, in that somebody obviously thought it fabulous as they nicked it.
Since that night she keeps the pumpkin indoors looking out of a window

Re the OP, I am with PPs that if there is a pumpkin or/and other decorations out it is ok to knock.

Auburngal · 31/10/2024 15:47

Already switched off the doorbell. It has its own fuse in the fuse box - it was installed by the builders.

Kids and all can press the bell for all they like I won't be able to hear it

I will be sitting in dark and not answering door.

ViciousCurrentBun · 31/10/2024 15:49

I have decorated the front of the house, have sweets and crisps and we dress up to answer the door.

IcyLilacZebra · 31/10/2024 15:50

The whole no decorations on the house thing no one will knock just isn't true well not in my area I don't and haven't participated in Halloween giving sweets etc out for well never I don't have lights on I keep my house dark curtains closed and will be ignoring any knock on my door it will set off my camera but I'm not bothered about that i don't agree with it but that's my choice

superplumb · 31/10/2024 15:54

Autumn38 · 31/10/2024 06:45

Nope will be getting the sweets ready and making sure the decorations are all sorted.

I love having little ones stop by in their costumes. It’s so cute! Think I might dress up too, get into the spirit 🥰

my parents will do it too and they are in their 70s but they have an amazing home that they decorate beautifully, they are amazing hosts and are brilliant fun! I REALLY hope I’m like them when I’m in my 70s ☺️

We have two 75 year olds near me and they go to so much effort. Gravestones in the lawn, blow up witches and ghosts, spiderwebbs draped from their roof, even those light beams on the house. Love it. Mine are still little so we go out but when they're too old, I'll decorate too for the next lot of children.

Non denominational.
