Anyone here not answering door today

I am going to switch off doorbell late afternoon. I have never done trick or treating as a child nor gave sweets to kids.

I just don't want my evening to be disturbed by the constant ringing of my doorbell. First few years of living at my home didn't get anyone as its a newbuild and people didn't know to go to the doors, you walk around the back of the block of flats and maisonettes.

Wonder how many people with Ring or similar doorbells will tell the kids and chavs to go away, politely or rudely?

I wouldn't say my kids look cute for halloween but that they would make grownups go into hiding, never saw that one coming. Especially since they don't go knocking on peoples doors but just do the shops as is the tradition where I live. Maybe you should move over here so you don't have to hide every year?

Whereabouts are you @Maria1979 ?
I’ve never heard of people just calling to shops at Halloween.

This 😭😭😭 actual hiding

They were only upstairs, not hiding in a dark cupboard in silence.

Live in a fairly new housing estate, the rule is 'no pumpkin-no knock' we don't do Halloween and in a decade of living here we have never had a single trick or treater knock on (despite the fact there are normally a fair few out) - so it really works.

Cocopops22 · 01/11/2024 18:10

I have a 5 year old and 3 year
old we have never done trick or treating and my kids dont mind or feel like they are missing out, everybody thinks I’m strange we don’t celebrate Xmas or Easter either only birthdays. People just celebrate things for the sake of it in my opinion unless of course there’s a religious reason behind it and you are religious!

BooBooDoodle · 01/11/2024 18:14

Me and DH go all out for Halloween as do the rest of our street (except the Christian’s over the road, they flee back to Manchester as they condemn our behaviour and tell us all we are inciting the devil🙄). Between the street we have fog machines, animatronics and decorate our houses and forecourts. We even get car loads of kids dropped off to trick or treat in our street. In all the years doing this we have never encountered any yobs or ungrateful kids. Everyone last night was thankful and everyone got into the spirit and had fun, even parents. Mad hour between 6-7pm then was done. It was such a fun night and our area in general was buzzing with kids having lots of fun which is what it is all about because everything else is garbage at the minute.

Oopsadandelion · 01/11/2024 18:29

Got home with toddler after work yesterday and some teens promptly threw eggs directly at us as we were going in the door. Was horrid. I want to love Halloween and make it fun for all the little kids, but it's losing its appeal now.

Pessismistic · 01/11/2024 18:47

Ignore definitely don't understand why we teach kids not to talk to strangers then go knocking for sweets surely it's cheaper to buy them some. Never done it and wouldn't want to. Couldn't even get through my gate with that many kids and parents hanging around. Stupid tradition.

Gingernan · 01/11/2024 18:51

We hadn't decorated at all, but we live on the corner and my grown up daughter who lives with me is very much adopted auntie to the local kids and did loads of goody bags for them. We had 18 trick or treaters. I'm not a fan but did some door duty, the kids were sweet.

Yes, some people turn the lights off and don't want to answer the door.
Regardless of how cute your kids look.
They don't have to answer and hand over sweets, you know.

There's so much unnecessarily adversarial attitude on the part of so many Hallowe'en grinches.

Does it come from hatred of children in general or are some people just curmudgeonly by nature?

50shadedofmagnolia · 01/11/2024 19:29

The kids around here only knock if you put a pumpkin out.
Once I've had enough I just bring the pumpkin inside and nobody else calls 🤷‍♀️

browneyes77 · 01/11/2024 20:30

I hate Halloween.

Always have.

Never had any interest in it as a kid. Which was a good job really as my mom saw trick or treating as begging and wouldn’t have let us go anyway (I’m inclined to agree)

I live in flats so don’t get troubled too much thankfully.

No. We just think Halloween is shit and don’t want to take part.

How do you know they weren’t in a cupboard in silence upstairs?

DiduAye · 01/11/2024 21:53

I don't participate in Halloween and noone calls here without forewarning ever So it's just another day

Why not just leave a tub of sweets outside? We do when we're going out.

Embarrassed Never Again GIF by CBS

I did, always have done. We do answer the door for a hour or so mostly planned visits from neighbours.

This year car pulls up, two kids get out and empty two huge bowls of goodies in their bags…. 😳

No. People who act like misery’s, get labelled misery’s 😚

But I bet they can spell miseries correctly!

Not wanting to pander to other peoples sprogs does not make one a misery!

Round here the 1st lot of teens passing would empty it

That happened in my road - someone left a bowl with sweets outside as they were going out with their little ones. Came home to find not only had the sweets all gone, so had the bowl!

hazelnutvanillalatte · 01/11/2024 22:10

Nothing gives me that cozy autumn feeling like the annual MN Halloween misery threads! You'd think people were getting held at gunpoint by children dressed as Pikachu

insidenumber9 · 01/11/2024 22:16

DilemmaDelilah · 31/10/2024 06:41

Our area has a sort of rule that you don't knock on doors/ring bells of houses that aren't decorated or have pumpkins outside. There have been newcomers who have asked the 'rules' of the area on our local Facebook page. It seems to work.

I thought that was the same in all areas

Houseofteenbots · 01/11/2024 22:21

wiesowarum · 31/10/2024 10:39

You are aware that this isn't a universal concept and that some folk do knock at undecorated houses, right?

Yes! The kids on our street certainly don't know this rule. They knock on every single door decorated or not. And if you don't answer some just keep ringing the bell over and over. Their parents just watch

"Hatred of children" because you don't like Halloween or trick or treaters at your door. 🙄
Good grief, are you always this dramatic?!

It's called traditions. Depending on where you live I think it's a shame you make your children miss out on christmas and easter. Most people have cherished memories of those holidays and they will feel like they miss out when all their friends talk about it and even in school you talk about christmas. Why don't you want to celebrate christmas ? If it's monetary you can do a budget one with home made decorations, small gifts etc
I just feel sorry for your children...
