Anyone here not answering door today

I am going to switch off doorbell late afternoon. I have never done trick or treating as a child nor gave sweets to kids.

I just don't want my evening to be disturbed by the constant ringing of my doorbell. First few years of living at my home didn't get anyone as its a newbuild and people didn't know to go to the doors, you walk around the back of the block of flats and maisonettes.

Wonder how many people with Ring or similar doorbells will tell the kids and chavs to go away, politely or rudely?

Going to make my evening meal. Making it a quick one as my kitchen overlooks the green area in the middle of my road. Don't want people to see I am at home

Oh for goodness sake. Wouldn’t it be easier to buy a tub of celebrations ?Couldn’t be bothered creeping about in my own house.

Uricon2 · 31/10/2024 22:00

I had a lovely evening. The best bit was 7 or 8 little skeletons crying out "pumpkins pumpkins" before they got to the path, so excited.

All with parents or big siblings, just great and worth the (considerable) effort.

Toenailz · 31/10/2024 23:39

Honestly killing myself laughing at all the grown miserly adults sat hiding in their own houses, in the dark, so wee tots don't see them and knock on their door. All so they don't have to heave themselves up off the couch and give out a couple of sweets from a multi-bag. 🙈

Had a lovely evening here - lots more came than last year, had compliments on the decs, gave the option of toys as well as sweeties, and the kids loved them. Which is what it's about. And trick or treating was most definitely a thing in England in the 90's 🙄Will do bigger and better for next year - make up for all the miserable folk that seem to be increasingly common these days. The worst are the ones that don't participate anymore just because their kids have outgrown it - seems odd to only give when you're receiving. The innocent happy smiley faces having a fun night, made getting up and down off the couch worth it.

Why not just leave a tub of sweets outside? We do when we're going out.

If you did that round here it'd be nicked, tub and all, within 5 seconds 😂

Talipesmum · 31/10/2024 23:48

Lovely here tonight as well. Little kids up to younger teens, we found some glow sticks in with the Halloween decorations so put a few of those in the pot too and some kids took one of those instead of a sweet. My teens draped a sheet over themselves and whoooed around as a ghost behind me, made the little ones laugh. Lots of compliments on the pumpkins, happy to give out sweets to families coming round. We don’t go round any more as ours are too old but it’s a lovely community thing here. Our next door neighbours don’t do Halloween (JW I think) and had a sign up to that effect, so no one knocked at their door, only the decorated houses.

Do people always have to think exactly like you, not to be labelled a 'misery'?

No. People who act like misery’s, get labelled misery’s 😚

You sound like fun 🥹 I wish/hope I live near you! My kids has their first ever trick or treating experience today and it was so lovely seeing everyone out and about. Spirits were high and it was really nice seeing all the warm, lovely people that we visited. My eldest said it was the best day ever. Please keep the Halloween spirit as there’ll have been so many littles who appreciated the effort you went to ❤️

Posted earlier but I actually ran out of sweets at 7.25. Over 200 kids came - I know as I had a box of 50 Haribos plus about 12 bags of sweets - they had 10-20 sweets each. All gone. So turned off the orange fairy lights, blew out the candies in the pumpkins and only one person knocked after that. They all had a great time. Lots of skeletons, four Oompa Loompas, and a very good Wednesday who deadpanned 'trick o treat'!

TheRestIsEntertainment · 01/11/2024 07:19

We had the loveliest evening, both guising and receiving them. It really lifted my spirits after a long slog at work. Our neighbours were an absolute joy. It makes me want to organise other opportunities to meet them and speak to them.

10 to 20 sweets each? No wonder you were so busy.

Again, folk who label others simply because they don't do exactly as they do are the issue.
Also, it's not misery's because they don't belong to misery. It's miseries.

We hid upstairs after 5pm and switched the downstairs lights off. Nobody knocked. I think over recent years people have caught on to the idea of only knocking on decorated houses but I wasn't taking the risk 😂

Not everyone likes answering the door to loads of people knocking every five minutes that goes on for a few hours, not sure why that's so funny or hard to understand.

We had sweets ready. Nobody knocked.

Yeah I've stopped buying them now as I just end up ploughing through them all myself. There seem to be known neighbourhoods in our town and everyone goes to them.

Notes get ignored. The teens are chavs that do it as not dressing up at all and wear hoodies up and mope around.

As long as they are polite let them participate. Some teens have really shitty home lives, probably the ones you are referring to as chavs so if some sweets and a smile can brighten their day a little I don't see why you would begrudge them.

Hearing teens screaming pathetically. Grow up

Edited

Well they are growing up so still a bit immature. They can be annoying grant you that but try not to judge them too severely. I cringe thinking of myself as a teen which makes me really indulgent with others😅

Jeesus you actuallly go into hiding. From dressed up children. Are you serious ?

I can't be bothered to be jumping up every 10 minutes to answer the door.

I used to do it every year (including the Covid years!) and I just can't be arsed any more. My youngest went off to uni this year so it was just me at home.

Nothing to do with being a "fun sponge"

Yes, some people turn the lights off and don't want to answer the door.
Regardless of how cute your kids look.
They don't have to answer and hand over sweets, you know.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 01/11/2024 13:31

We must be really lucky as had a constant stream for two hours but kids were polite, most took only one sweet, regardless of age.

The little ones were cute, the older ones had some great costumes and makeup.

Kids only come round to houses that are decorated around here.

Tbh older teens seem to have get togethers at their houses around here - v few older teens out ringing on door bells.

I wouldn't say my kids look cute for halloween but that they would make grownups go into hiding, never saw that one coming. Especially since they don't go knocking on peoples doors but just do the shops as is the tradition where I live. Maybe you should move over here so you don't have to hide every year?

Definitely don't trick or treat just at the shops over here (UK) not heard of that one before.
Here it's knocking on all the houses doors.
