Haven’t paid rent in months!

Uppoopcreek · 31/10/2024 00:13

I’ve just realised I haven’t paid my rent in around 6 months! I don’t know how this could have happened?
ive lived here around 4 years. All I can think is I set up a standing order a while ago and it didn’t work properly?
now, I have pretty severe MH problems. Awful anxiety and depression(probable ADHD but still waiting for an appointment to start the process). I never check my bank, I’m behind with other bills, too. I’m a bury my head in the sand type of person, but worry constantly about everything, About a month ago I hit rock bottom. Won’t go into details, but it wasn’t great.
I have 3 DC, and I’m on benefits.
Help! What do I do?! Had a text from landlord last night asking me to call him, which is what’s just prompted me to look now. I was asleep when he text.

If I was the landlord, I would insist on direct payments.

I find tracking my spending incredibly difficult - so, if my standing order hadn't been going through I wouldn't necessarily be aware that the money I was using was 'rent' money.

If your standing order had been set up properly and had previously worked ok, it would have been going through.
They really don’t just fail, without intervention.

sanityisamyth · 01/11/2024 11:09

@SilverChampagne if the payments were going into the deceased son's bank account and they closed it, they would fail? Still up to OP to check the payments were made and the new landlord was receiving the rent.

sanityisamyth · 01/11/2024 11:10

OP hasn't been back ...

BebbanburgIsMine · 01/11/2024 11:37

I've read the whole thread, but this is my first post on it, I was just thinking the OP might be in trouble with the DWP, if she's spent the money meant for her rent, would it be misappropriation of funds?

I'm also starting to think, as she hasn't come back to update anything that she might have been hoping for offers of money.

If she's not a troll that is.

Yeah I wonder why...

Citizens Advice is a good first place to start. They can do a benefit check snd their debt advisors can help sort out a debt management plan

OK, well the first thing to do is to call your landlord first thing in the morning and discuss this with him head on, work out a solution between you both. If you had been reliable up until six months ago, he may well be open to a payment plan and allowing you to get back on track. He hasn't noticed the payments are missing, so he presumably isn't badly off himself.

I think this.

I’m sorry your MH is so bad Op. Can you get some practical help for it, rather than simply medication?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/11/2024 17:45

That might be beneficial to the OP too by the sounds of it.

ConstanceM · 01/11/2024 17:49

Lets hope the landlord doesn't have a mortgage else he will be be arrears and bank could take the house off him permanently. Lets hope it doesn't come to that. Not sure what Mumsnet is supposed to do, probably wise to call landlord in the first instance and your guarantor in that order. Also get some help.

CocoCarrie · 01/11/2024 17:54

Do we have an update yet?

Drakhan · 01/11/2024 18:04

First things first Go to your bank and find out why your Standing order didn’t go out.
Get written confirmation.
Reinstate it if you can.
Work out your finances so that you can pay your rent + part of arrears each month.
Speak to your guarantor
then
finally speak to your landlord.
No point speaking to landlord unless you know you can make the new payments

WallaceinAnderland · 31/10/2024 01:14

How did you not notice all the extra money you had from not paying rent?

And yet you still spent the money and didn’t think to pay the rent. Come off it!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/11/2024 18:14

Before people start throwing round accusations of OP not coming back because she may be a troll or that she was begging for money. The question in my mind is “Is she able to come back, is she okay, Im sure you all know what I mean by okay

Mumoftwochildrenand6furkids · 01/11/2024 18:15

Id speak to him and ask If you can set up an payment plan or something always better to speak to people and explain rather than ignore them but I know whats it is like i have Bipolar and can get in right muddle paying things with my brain fog.

NautilusLionfish · 01/11/2024 18:17

I am sorry. I would call the landlord with apologies and try to work out something sensible. But am not sure if this is good advice. What I know is that I understand he ADHD burying head in the sand bit. I have lost at least if not over £100,000 by burying my head in the sand including not billing work I have done. Its devastating when you momentarily pull your head out of the sand and then ADHDickhead rears its head again and am back in the sand.

I’ve a feeling she’ll be fine.

Oh dear!
However, did you not log into your internet banking and see more than expected?
I guess he’ll want it all paying pretty quickly - are you in a position to do that?

Not helpful, what is done is done. She needs help now.

Will you be able to afford next month’s rent?

Hi op,

I am sorry life is hard atm.

What is suggested is really the first thing you need to do…make sure you pay next month. Then work your way up to the last unpaid months. If he wasn’t bothered, he might not be bothered to wait but never assume and ask what is possible.

Good luck 🌺

saltinesandcoffeecups · 31/10/2024 00:44

So you’ve spent 6 months of rent not on tent? But the COL is crippling? I don’t see how both can be true.

If the OP has ADHD they will have spent all of the money impulsively on a load of crap, but doesn’t want the judgement. To be fair it’s how her brain works, she can’t think things through.

ssd · 01/11/2024 18:42

Why are people still giving advice?

Op is long gone.

twoistrulycompany · 01/11/2024 18:48

Pickandmixmood · 31/10/2024 01:16

This. Not only did she not notice all the extra money, she somehow spent it all without realising.

And is still behind on other bills!

Teddybear23 · 01/11/2024 19:02

To be honest I feel more sympathy with the guarantor- if she or he is given a 6month rent bill you could cause HUGE problems for them.

I was thinking the same thing! Mental health effects People in all different ways. She came for advice & People are saying she needs her kids taken off her!! She hasn't committed an evil crime. Keyboard warriors at their best 👌

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/11/2024 19:26

At this point I don't really care if OP is real or not - tbh on forums like this anyone could be lying out their arse, it doesn't really matter.

The number of people who cannot grasp how some conditions lead to a 'head in sand' 'Ostrich Syndrome' reaction is truly astonishing.

Just because you can do something, you find it easy... doesn't mean we all do!
