To think this budget will finish us off

BurnoutGP · 30/10/2024 22:12

I am a GP Partner of over 20 years. I am now senior partner for the last few years. We have seen year on year below inflation funding increase. With an explosion in demand and massive shift of work from secondary care. We have issues wirh recruitment.
Our partner income is shrinking year on year. We are now always overdrawn and this gets worse every month.
We just cannot soak up the MLW and NI without adequate resource uplift.
I think we will be done. I'm so very tired of the constant battle and the demand and anger while working "part time" 60hr weeks.
We will have to hand back our contract. And we wont be the only one. That will leave one surviving practice in my area.
I'm done.

Why would anyone hear from Rayner? All attention is focused on the budget.

Because she is deputy PM, deputy of a party being heavily criticised by economists, advisors, and business. Even people in the street are saying they’ve been mislead, have you seen the newsSurely all their big guns should be put explaining why this is so good for the country. Let’s face it she’s normally very happy to stand in front of the cameras.

No worries we’re stuck with 5 years of this shit, there will be plenty of other complete fuck ups that will destroy our economy and society what history can judge this shambles of a government on.

Agreed. I've seen many Labour governments come and go and they are all shysters.🙄

KoalaCalledKevin · 31/10/2024 19:20

Reeves admits she has no plan in place for the inevitable global downturn should Trump win in the US elections

What did she say? Because I imagine any politician, if asked "do you have a plan for it Trump caused economic disaster", would be fairly circumspect. Trump has already (unreasonably) accused Labour of election interference, acknowledging any kind of plan would accept the premise of the question, which I can see they'd want to avoid.

It’s the chancellor’s responsibility. Oliver Dowden didn’t get trotted out for Tory budgets, did he?

Not sure if you are referring to my post but yes, professions like teaching children and medicine require some human contact. They are also essential service, much more so than many of the activities carried about by lawyers. I didn't just list Lawyers but they already use AI a lot so it's pretty realistic rather than 'hilarious'.
Jobs in discretionary sectors will reduce over time as people get poorer. Essential sectors will hold up better. AI is very unlikely to be the panacea that some people seem to believe. The cost is likely to be prohibitive. Perhaps we should come back to this in 10 and 20 years.

Teaching doesn’t require any more human contact than the other jobs you referenced, in fact as others have pointed out given the importance of good quality consistent approach nationally, human delivery is actually less desirable.

And whilst you’re right AI is already being utilised in law, accountant and tech. I know my job will change immeasurably, but I also know that at least for the rest of my working life I will have clients who want human delivery. Those who don’t have paying clients and are instead at the mercy of government departments who are only interested in costs will see their jobs change far more rapidly.

You could give Labour 100 years and there would only be one direction of travel re the economy.

Ah so you have an issue with democracy re Brexit! Labour have the luxury of not having to cope with a global pandemic.

In opposition all Labour did was slag off the Tories and blame them for everything- seems like it’s all they can do in Government too! Roll on 2029.

Ah yes, the lies we were told about Brexit that the hard of thinking fell for, and ah yes, tories had a pandemic to deal with, which was lucky for them as they got to skim more off us with their VIP lanes for their pals to provide us with dud PPE. Give your bloody head a wobble.

Maybe move on. Give your head a wobble and talk about the mess Labour have just created with their Budget - this was their opportunity to do well- they have failed the country

Human interaction is fundamental to humanity. We should be doing everything we can to keep AI in the data analysis box and out of general civilisation.

Why?

Do you understand what printing did? It ended the need for humans to directly interact with each other to impart knowledge. Do you want to do away with printing?

MrsMurphyIWish · 31/10/2024 19:39

If you can’t see the difference between printing and AI there is no help really. Printing is still the interaction between humans, it preserves one side of the conversation for centuries.

If you could interact with a book, beyond just reading it, would that be a bad thing?

If you could ask it questions, chat with it, would you ban that?

... a party being heavily criticised by economists, advisors, and business. Even people in the street are saying they’ve been mislead, have you seen the news ...

I see the right-wing media heavily criticising Labour - Starmer and Reeves know that this is going to happen every day for the next 4 years. Economists, advisors and business (whoever they are) seem generally positive about the budget. The OBR is more reserved, but their report spells out quite clearly that Brexit has caused many times more damage to the UK economy than anything Reeves has announced, and that it continues to do so.

"The news" seems to consist of the Mail and Express making up stories - there was one earlier in the week about increases in Road Tax costing drivers £1,500 a year, only for no such thing to be announced, which the same papers then falsely claimed was due to public pressure. Meanwhile in the background, "someone" sends false stories out about VAT on childrens' clothes (that one even made it onto MN) and CCHQ has seemingly locked away Hunt, the man who wrecked the NHS and was just as useless as Chancellor, so that he can't do any more damage.

In other "news" the Telegraph is full of scare stories about IHT - a tax that impacts only 4% of the population - and already has articles about how the rich can avoid paying it.

As for "being misled" - have people already forgotten the mismanagement and mendacity of the government of the last 14 years? It seems so, but perhaps they'll wake up when "Honest Bob" - the man who gave an illegal £40million tax break to a pornographer and donor- is elected Tory leader.

Humans deliver books, do they? Every time they are read? The author reads to every single person?

Are you an AI bot seeking answers to evolve?

Edit: only asking as this was a thread about a GP practice and your posts have been about AI and education. And agree AI had a place in education and have been using it for over a year - I also know AI “learns” from conversation so am I speaking to a bot or someone interested in the future of education?

I don't think this is the case, I've read a few articles which have not been from that press, including from the BBC which has the reaction from the IFS and Resolution Foundation who were critical
