To think this budget will finish us off

I am a GP Partner of over 20 years. I am now senior partner for the last few years. We have seen year on year below inflation funding increase. With an explosion in demand and massive shift of work from secondary care. We have issues wirh recruitment.
Our partner income is shrinking year on year. We are now always overdrawn and this gets worse every month.
We just cannot soak up the MLW and NI without adequate resource uplift.
I think we will be done. I'm so very tired of the constant battle and the demand and anger while working "part time" 60hr weeks.
We will have to hand back our contract. And we wont be the only one. That will leave one surviving practice in my area.
I'm done.

The horrible present is now. Massive inequality and unfairness because a child's learning and progress depends of the skill of their teacher.

And I was wrong about terminals. We won't even need them. It will be apps.

Bring children together in school, to socialise them. Teach them with interactive AI.

Okay. If you are trying to suggest that all children, regardless of parental/ grand parental wealth, deserve access to good education and opportunities, then I fully agree with you.
If you are suggesting that what you describe is a great way to achieve this, then I disagree. And for more than one reason!

AI "teachers" are already being created. And they are a lot cheaper than human teachers. They don't go off sick, they don't need holidays, they don't whinge about each other.

The saved money can be put into fixing schools.

It will cost a lot initially. I just can’t see the government investing in top of the range tech. It will be some crap second-rate version that isn’t fit for purpose. Like in the NHS!

Some AI may take over, but it will happen first in places like Japan and S Korea. We will be late in the western world to adopt this I reckon.

Mwanamatapa · 31/10/2024 18:03

This budget is going to be a disaster across the board, well except for the super wealthy, as usual. The increase in NI employee tax is going to skyrocket inflation as businesses are forced to raise prices to survive.

The people who are trying to get in the property ladder are impacted by the increase in stamp duty.

Capital gains tax increase his hardest at the lowest income bracket.

And on and on.

No idea how you will survive OP, no opportunity to increase your income to offset these taxes.

Labour have gone back on all their pre-election promises.

The govt won't need to invest in AI teacher tech. Just like they don't write textbooks. They will licence it.

Just because you don't understand the implications of this budget on growth doesn't mean that those that do and are therefore vocal are having a hissy fit. And also, not everyone one is far / right (why is right' always linked with 'far' by the hard of thinking...?) just because they disagree with your point of view

Someone once said that trying to tax your way to prosperity was like standing in a bucket and trying to lift yourslef up by the handle. Even Blair saw that...and he bought his own clothes ;)

I think when you start calling people you disagree with politically 'hard of thinking' ie insulting them, you're losing the argument.

I understand the implications of this budget very well. I'm just surprised that some people don't understand that there isn't really an alternative. Liz Truss and the mini-budget and all that hasn't set the country well- we are broke and public services are in a terrible situation.
What would you have done? What services would you have cut? Maternity or education? Released even more prisoners early or stopped aid to Ukraine? You get the picture. The chancellor isn't doing this for fun- she's literally got not alternative! And you can thank the Tories for that. Or would you have raised taxes on workers?
Regarding clothes, I'd much rather have a PM who accepts some clothes from a friend as opposed to one who broke the law and lied about and enabled full-on corruption of billions of pounds of public money, or one who trashed the economy and had to resign in record time for being so totally, utterly incompetent.

How will an increase in second home stamp duty of 2% stop FTBs getting on the property ladder?
If anything it will help them.

The poorest have been taking the brunt for 14 years. All of a sudden, people with money are getting upset, because the reality of the worst government we ever had is coming to hit them hard.

V0xPopuli · 31/10/2024 18:35

Is your practice rather small/not especially well run?

My GP practice is thriving. They have embraced change. They make excellent use of an online triage system, have hired paramedics, physiotherapists & other clinical staff to support. They offer phone consultations as well as face to face. I have no trouble getting a same day appointment. They operate from a new building opened two years ago. They co-locate with a pharmacy so you can collect your prescription on the spot.

Its a different model. Its working, and the local population are very happy with them.

What, the people who care for you are worried they're not longer going to either be paid to work or even work at all. Yes, that one's all about the reality of a Tory government.

This exactly.

I actually could feel sorry for specific individuals - I can see that it's not nice to have to take your kids out of your preferred school or to not be able to do what you want to do with the family farm.

But the absolute unawareness of how life is for other people, the young people working for nothing but to pay landlords, the state of our public services, the collapse in mental health support, dentistry..... I'm just left speechless really.

Hoardasauruskaren · 31/10/2024 18:47

Regarding care workers the Scottish Govt introduced a £12 ph pledge for all care workers this year! Obv if NMW goes up this will also go up to slightly above mw so even higher costs for care companies etc. The staff deserve it but if the funding doesn’t cover it will care homes/ home care etc cut staff/ have to shut down ?

Feelingathomenow · 31/10/2024 18:49

Rachel Reeves is admitting the Budget is likely to hit workers by impacting pay rises - no shit Sherlock

RunningOverTime · 31/10/2024 18:55

It’s an aside but of course teaching is going to look enormously different in a decade, the change is going to come quickly.

I can’t however help laughing at the rebuttal that AI will replace lawyers but not teachers. Hilarious.

At least that will have a positive impact on inflation.

But not for those already struggling to hear their homes or pay their mortgage. - not for things such as tourist attractions, hospitality etc.

BIossomtoes · 31/10/2024 18:59

Low inflation benefits everyone.

That depends. Deflation is pretty nasty- massive job losses, falls in income. Not sure that will exactly benefit everyone!
Low inflation because the £ retains its PPP longer term much better but it's never going to happen!

If anything it will help them.

But the equalisation of CGT rates will affect them. People will be more likely to invest in safer real estate than more volatile shares, esp at the lower end of the property market, the type of housing FTB want

It's not even the case anyway, as the IFS points out the budget and extra costs will likely push up prices. And interest rates.

Lower pay against that is hardly a sell

'Mr Johnson described the forecasts as "pretty awful".'

Not sure if you are referring to my post but yes, professions like teaching children and medicine require some human contact. They are also essential service, much more so than many of the activities carried about by lawyers. I didn't just list Lawyers but they already use AI a lot so it's pretty realistic rather than 'hilarious'.
Jobs in discretionary sectors will reduce over time as people get poorer. Essential sectors will hold up better. AI is very unlikely to be the panacea that some people seem to believe. The cost is likely to be prohibitive. Perhaps we should come back to this in 10 and 20 years.

Businesses cannot pass the costs on, if consumers won't pay them.

So businesses will mitigate the costs by employing fewer staff.

I imagine you understand that.

The news has been full of small businesses stating exactly this today- redundancies being the only option. Expect unemployment to rise sharply over the next few months. Will be surprised if either Starmer or Reeve are on the front bench this time next year. Has anyone heard from Raynor or is s he keeping her head down for the inevitable leadership contest?

BIossomtoes · 31/10/2024 19:10

Why would anyone hear from Rayner? All attention is focused on the budget.

Well yes, the cost of living crisis is about to go off the scale.
