To think coronation street is rubbish now?

I mean it is, isn’t it? Stupid storylines, boring characters … shame really as it was really good once (obviously it’s always been a soap and some cliches but still.)

Can it survive once the older established characters leave? I don’t know anyone young who watches it. Or am I out of touch and everyone else thinks it’s amazing?

It's changed a lot over the years and seems to have become more story rather than character driven.

Jc2001 · 30/10/2024 20:43

I think soap operas have generally had their day.

LieutenantJumboJr · 30/10/2024 20:43

I still watch it out of habit and it honestly feels like a chore more than anything. Something to be got through not enjoyed. Ridiculous really since nobody is forcing me. I think I will just stop actually. There certainly isn’t any current storyline I’m interested in

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 30/10/2024 20:48

On the scale of soaps, Corrie is one of the better ones. Eastenders is a massive vat of pish nowadays.
Not that the scale is saying much.

BeatsAntique · 30/10/2024 20:49

Bloody hell, I didn’t even realise it was still on!

sarahsandie · 30/10/2024 20:50

Yes is it crap.
Have you watched classic coronation street on ITV3 in the afternoons?
God it used to be good!
I'm guessing the budget has reduced, the actors are paid less now than the likes of Mike Baldwin and Richard Hillman were.
I think people used to enjoy it as there was no reality TV. These days it's become very much a soap.

This is exactly how I feel as well.

I'm 42 and the only person my age who knows who watches it. It's habit as I watched with my mum growing up and my granny likes to discuss it with me Blush

I usually watch the whole week in one sitting and FF through most of it these days.

I can't be bothered or keep track of the whole marrying three different people in the same street.

MoonWoman69 · 30/10/2024 20:53

It's rubbish now, but I'm the same, I put it on out of habit but am usually doing something on my phone!
The writers need a shake up. The storylines are absolutely ludicrous! And the lack of professionalism and incompetency doesn't show the police force in a great light either!
It's the only soap I "watch", but I'm thinking I may ditch it if there's no real improvement.

the80sweregreat · 30/10/2024 20:54

Only ever watched EE ( nearly 40 years of angst and hurt) but dropped out of Corrie early 90s.
However, I did watch it on Sunday night and apart from David Platt, the acting was a bit hit and miss and ( of course) I've no idea what is going on! Nice to see Steve McDonald is still in it as I have a crush on him ☺️
Gail was in it too !

We've got a game of GDPR breach bingo going on in our household.

Teanbiscuits33 · 30/10/2024 20:58

It’s shite now. Boring stories, the acting is abysmal and there isn’t any atmosphere in scenes, nobody ever in the rovers (which I suppose is true to life now because pubs are dying) which just makes the scenes lifeless. I watch the old ones on Itv3 and they are a world away, so many decent stories running concurrently, good actors, good humour. I think the younger generation watch less tv full stop and when they do they lean towards Netflix and streaming so soaps are just boring now.

noaccess · 30/10/2024 20:58

Yes, classic corrie is so good! It’s a shame as a lot of the actors are the same; they can act, they just have awful scripts.

Switch to watching classic Corrie on ITV 3. Shelley jilted Charlie Stubbs today, much better storylines and acting

I remember that from first time round!

I gave up on it ages ago.

Caught a bit of it the other night and Ken was cos-playing smug Lulu being the Man Who Fell To Earth while the woman from Brookie gurned in front of him and Steve son of Jim 'so it is' McDonald looked terribly pained.

Next thing, Nick and Toyah again with the lurve faces ... oh dear lord, NO.

Like a school play.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 30/10/2024 21:05

I haven't seen it since Richard Hillman drove into the canal. All the soaps just require too much time wise now

Sarahconnor1 · 30/10/2024 21:08

I think they used to write stories for the characters, now they rewrite characters to fit the stories.

Classic Coronation street is so much better

Justleaveitblankthen · 30/10/2024 21:08

Haven't watched it since the glory days of Bet Lynch and Alec Gilroy. 😂
I did hear there was some storyline about botched Lipo' or some such, so no -I would hate it now.

Onlyonekenobe · 30/10/2024 21:09

It's been crap for about 20 years!

ExtraOnions · 30/10/2024 21:10

Corrie used to be on twice a week.. it had great writers, and actors, who built storylines up (that weren’t leaked to the papers), great comedy, as well as drama.

As soon as they started going 3 or 4 times a week, the storylines got weaker, the cast got bigger, too many characters with not enough “about them”.. they now need so many storylines, you can’t keep up the quality or the realism …

The budgets are clearly much smaller as well

(Ditto for all soaps)

LlynTegid · 30/10/2024 21:11

I wonder if it would improve if it was back to two 30 minute episodes a week.

Yes I watch classic and its still enjoyable ,but even thst Has a shelf life ,I know the storyline are going to get more and more ridiculous in the not to distance future

everythingcrossed · 30/10/2024 21:20

The glory days of two episodes a week and it being very female-focused - lots of women eye-rolling each other, "she's no better than she ought to be" and you knew you were in for a showdown if one of them addressed another as "lady". It also had lots of older characters who didn't have very exciting storylines but had fantastic dialogue.

I stopped watching about 10 or 15 years ago although, yep, I do occasionally catch Phyllis or Hilda or Vera on Classic Corrie and it's a real treat.

Sadcafe · 30/10/2024 21:20

DW watches it and Emmerdale all the time, Emmerdale is beyond dreadful, at least Corrie has the occasional bit of humour but I’d be more than happy if it stopped, dull characters, boring overly long storylines, if she’s not in, it’s not on

misshappy123 · 30/10/2024 21:20

I feel the same, I watch the classic Corrie and it is just so good and so far away from what it is today. I also still watch the current episodes but I'm not sure why! I just find it baffling that the writers/directors/producers don't see it themselves. So many of the stories are forgotten almost as soon as they've happened and so much of it just doesn't make sense in the real world....do they not do any research?!? Or even just think 'that's ridiculous, we can't do that'
I also wonder what some of the actors think, especially ones who have been in since the good old days...
