Is Philadelphia cream cheese worth it?

Be honest, mums - is Philadelphia cream cheese actually worth the extra money? I keep going back and forth! Trying to decide if it's a worthwhile treat or just clever marketing

Payson Breton is divine. Makes Philadelphia taste really processed.

WildCherryBlossom · 29/10/2024 20:56

Oh @tealandteal I beg to differ. I make baked cheese cake quite a bit and I have tried most supermarket own brands - Philadelphia is by far the best. I will happily settle for Lidl own brand cream cheese on my toasted bagel (thinly sliced cucumber and freshly ground black pepper etc etc) but I will only sully a cheesecake with it if, after scouring several shops, I can't get enough Philadelphia for the recipe.

bluecomputerscreen · 29/10/2024 21:00

tbh I can't taste the difference.

love it as dip for spicy chrisps

GettingStuffed · 29/10/2024 21:02

I'm perfectly happy with Tesco own brand but I mainly use it in cooking so it may not be the same if you eat it as it is

ProvincialLady24 · 29/10/2024 21:11

It's got additives, you're better off buying own brand as doesn't tend to have any sneaky nasties. Much cheaper too.

BlackForestCake · 29/10/2024 21:17

What exactly are the objections of so many posters to guar gum and citric acid?

Longley Farm cream cheese is the best! Really thick and creamy. Far superior to Philadelphia.

Where can you buy this?
Love Longley Farm yogurts and cottage cheese. Never seen their cream cheese

The Aldi version has the same additives as Philadelphia. And tastes much worse!

Does anyone remember the chocolate Philadelphia?
I have a sweet tooth Blush
Not sure if it's still in production.

Philadelphia: Full Fat Soft Cheese, Salt, Stabiliser (Guar Gum), Acid (Citric Acid)

Aldi: Full Fat Soft Cheese (𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐤), Salt, Stabilisers: Guar Gum, Carrageenan; Citrus Fibre.

Mmm citrus fibre and seaweed

purplebeansprouts · 29/10/2024 21:49

Anyone make their own upf-free version?

purpleme12 · 29/10/2024 21:50

They still do Milka Philadelphia

DelilahBucket · 29/10/2024 21:50

It's UPF and one of the worst I've seen that markets itself as "just cheese". I've stopped buying it and use M&S own brand instead.

Is that non upf?

Mums. (No apostrophe. Sorry, but very annoying.) But obviously it doesn't matter who you are on this thread!

Yeah, auto correct check screwed me over and you can't edit on the app.

roadrager · 29/10/2024 21:52

I've actually found Asda own brand cream cheese cheaper, better quality and it lasts much longer than Philly

Rollonsummerplease · 29/10/2024 14:55

I rarely buy it. I enjoy it. But no matter how carefully I serve it out of the container it always goes mouldy and I end up throwing a good percentage of it out. And I'm talking about it being well within its bbd.
I certainly wouldn't pay full price for it but have been tempted when it's on offer.

It does say use within 1 week once opened.
Which is why I also often end up with the end of the tub going mouldy! But just saying, it wouldnt keep until anything close to the BB date once opened.

GoForARun · 29/10/2024 21:54

I always, always bought Philly.

But recently I've been consciously looking at labels, trying to avoid - or at least reduce - ultraprocessed foods.

The supermarket own brand soft cheeses tend to be upf-free so that's what I buy now.

Compash · 29/10/2024 21:56

Philadelphia has guar gum in it; for that reason I buy Sainsbury's Cream Cheese which is only cheese.

Same.

Compash · 29/10/2024 21:57

Sorry, I see this has already been mentioned... 😁 (cheesey grin)

Mumsgirls · 29/10/2024 22:09

I remember the block stuff bought loose when I was a child from the market.I am mid60s, not sure what happened that we cannot get it now.

ClemmyTine · 29/10/2024 22:59

Philadelphia has added ingredients/ upf type in it. I bought Waitrose own brand. Just cheese in that one.

Ooh didn't realise Longley farm made cream cheese. I'll have to try it, if its anything like as nice as their cottage cheese I will love it.
