Is Philadelphia cream cheese worth it?

Be honest, mums - is Philadelphia cream cheese actually worth the extra money? I keep going back and forth! Trying to decide if it's a worthwhile treat or just clever marketing

Don't think so. Haven't bought it in a long time so can't remember exactly what it's like, but can eat spoonfuls on the Aldi stuff so happy enough with that.

Normallynumb · 29/10/2024 15:35

I think it's better but I haven't tried every own brand
It's always on offer, I've just bought a family sized tub for £2 in Sainsbury's today

OneTC · 29/10/2024 15:37

I only eat it with jam and don't really notice the difference between supermarket and branded

youngestisapsycho · 29/10/2024 15:38

No! Have you seen the ingredients?!
I buy Tesco own make

Blarn · 29/10/2024 15:39

No, it's rubbish. Paysan Breton or one of the Eastern European brand cream cheeses.

FeralNun · 29/10/2024 15:39

I swung by to say Longley Farm, but see I was beaten to it by pp’s. It is utterly lush, with a far superior texture.

GroovyChick87 · 29/10/2024 15:40

No, I've had supermarket own cream cheese that is just as good if not better.

theemptinessmachine · 29/10/2024 15:43

I tried Sainsbo one recently but it is sweet , watery and doesn't have that real sour taste. Has to be Philadelphia .

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 29/10/2024 15:44

Sainsbury's used to do an organic one... but they don't anymore so it's Philly for us. Budget cream cheese is rank.

Thinking of Boursin now.

I love Boursin but it's a totally different cheese.

A "worthwhile treat"? It's Philadelphia, not caviar Confused

This. I'm puzzled if it's the same one I'm thinking of?

If it's getting mouldy then you aren't sealing it properly or using clean cutlery each time.

JollyPearlShaker · 29/10/2024 15:50

sorry, it's not just for mums...what do you think?

Longley Farm cream cheese is the best! Really thick and creamy. Far superior to Philadelphia.

And their cottage cheese is a billion times better than the watery shit you buy in Tesco

DrizzleMySwizzle · 29/10/2024 15:54

Philadelphia is wet, mushy crap. No different to supermarket own brand. Maybe worse. I'd love if Boursin did a plain cream cheese as I find that firm and slightly crumbly cream cheese (the way Philadelphia used to be) so hard to find. Paysan Breton is nice but doesn't quite have what I'm looking for.

Longley Farm cream cheese is the best! Really thick and creamy. Far superior to Philadelphia.

But it's so hard to find! Longly farm cottage cheese is also great.

liverpudcounsel · 29/10/2024 15:55

No. It has more ingredients and is more processed than supermarket brands

As with many of these products, I think it's better than the big supermarkets' own brands, but not as good as the Lidl one.

So many products I hear this then buy into the hype. Taste it and it’s shit.

Getonwitit · 29/10/2024 16:01

It is awful can't stand the taste. Lidl's one is great but my favourite is Morrisons savers one.

I refuse to buy stuff like Ketchup, beans, cereal etc in own brand as I just dont think they taste anything like the branded stuff. BUT i genuinely think LIDL cream cheese is nicer than Philidelphia (I dont find it as watery) and its like 99p so wont break the bank giving it a try.

SocksAndTheCity · 29/10/2024 14:55

Me too. I'll also keep the Paysan Breton to myself.

Shhh don't tell them!😉

Choux · 29/10/2024 16:03

Another vote for Paysan Breton but I would love to find some Longley Farm to try. I can't find Longley Farm anywhere near me.

poppy96 · 29/10/2024 16:04

It's full of additives and emulsifiers which will wreck your gut, don't buy! Supermarket own brand only has one ingredient - cheese (milk)

Jom222 · 29/10/2024 16:06

I have an old recipe for cheesecake mini's w/a large handwritten notation 'USE PHILLY ONLY'

We tried it w/a store brand they didn't set up properly. So I'd say yes it is worth buying the real stuff

HandShoe · 29/10/2024 16:08

I‘m trying to cut grocery costs but I won’t be downgrading from Paysan Breton to Philidelphia. It’s in a different league. (And currently out of stock here 😥)
