Is Philadelphia cream cheese worth it?

Be honest, mums - is Philadelphia cream cheese actually worth the extra money? I keep going back and forth! Trying to decide if it's a worthwhile treat or just clever marketing

Unless I did a side by side taste test I can’t tell (or remember) the difference between Philadelphia and an own brand.

I was going to give you my cream cheese based experience but see you only want to hear from Mum's so I'll keep my advice to myself

Pathetic response

Philadelphia ingredients - Full Fat Soft Cheese, Salt, Stabiliser (Guar Gum), Acid (Citric Acid)

Tescos own brand ingredients - Full fat soft cheese

lcakethereforeIam · 29/10/2024 16:21

It's really easy to make your own. Mix some salt (about 1 tsp) into Greek yoghurt, turn it out into a sieve lined with kitchen roll, cover with another sheet. Sit over a bowl in the fridge overnight. Taste, add more salt if necessary or other flavours.

That said I rarely bother as i don't often eat it. Usually just buy Philly light when it's on offer for other family members to have because that's what they say they want. The low fat supermarket one is very wet.

NasiDagang · 29/10/2024 16:21

My ASD daughter won't use anything else in her cheesecake, costing me a fortune on Philadelphia products.

shockeditellyou · 29/10/2024 16:24

Does anywhere do the old style cream cheese that came in a brick like butter? I would kill for that :(

Floit · 29/10/2024 16:26

RedFronds · 29/10/2024 14:57

I'm sure I read on MN that Philadelphia has a load of crap in that Aldi soft cheese doesn't have in it.

Yes you're right. I can't find what it is now but I remember reading similar.

Balloonhearts · 29/10/2024 16:27

The plain one, no. The chives one, hell yes!

dontforgetme · 29/10/2024 16:27

I really like the Asda soft cheese, I buy this regularly for our bagels. I will buy Philadelphia when it's on offer.

DrizzleMySwizzle · 29/10/2024 16:31

It feels like a fever dream now, but there was a time when chocolate Philadelphia was stocked on supermarket shelves, like that wasn't an insane food moment. I remember it tasting like old meat paste.

same.

PirateJim · 29/10/2024 16:32

I've started to make Labneh. Very easy and much nicer than shop bought cream cheese, I think.

steff13 · 29/10/2024 16:32

If I'm using it "straight" like on a bagel, yes. If I'm using it to bake with then I usually buy the store brand because I feel like it doesn't make as much of a difference to the texture of the baked goods as it does to just eat it.

Philadelphia and all the store brands sell it in a brick in the US. I guess they don't sell it that way there?

Grumpycashier · 29/10/2024 16:33

Of all the cheeses to be snobby about, you pick Philadelphia? Good grief. Get yourself a proper cheese selection! There's a whole world of wonderful real cheese out there 😍

tulippa · 29/10/2024 16:34

It's definitely nicer but I'll only get it when it's on offer.

SocksAndTheCity · 29/10/2024 17:33

I remember the chocolate Philadelphia @DrizzleMySwizzle . They were some strange times, right enough.

Wasn't it Jennifer Saunders in the advert for it? 🤔

I don’t remember this at all. When was it around- I’m 42 and drawing a complete blank. Then again if they didn’t sell it in KwikSave I wouldn’t have known it existed.

Swallowdoubleandrunamile · 29/10/2024 18:03

I remember the chocolate version, MN were plugging it for ages.
It was rank .

ThePoshUns · 29/10/2024 18:05

Supermarket own brands are better for you as have no additives. So aren't classed as UPF like Philadelphia is.

Not all of them. I have the Aldi one in front of me and it has the same ingredients as Philadelphia

marshmallowfinder · 29/10/2024 18:18

I think OP works for the company... Bit weird, this thread.

SquigglePigs · 29/10/2024 18:19

We've always thought Philadelphia was worth the extra money. Have to say I'm rethinking from a UPF perspective but haven't got that far yet. I feel like we could get away with swapping the plain one but I only like the real thing for the garlic and herb flavour.

Mums. (No apostrophe. Sorry, but very annoying.) But obviously it doesn't matter who you are on this thread!

But it's so hard to find! Longly farm cottage cheese is also great.

I'm lucky enough to live just a couple of miles from the farm😊 we can get everything they produce here
