Expensive item, dirty packaging

I recently purchased an item that cost over £1000 from a well known retailer. I ordered it online. I see it as a treat purchase as it’s so expensive. It’s not something that I purchase often at all.

Was really looking forward to it. When it arrived, the item’s retail packaging was really dirty. It’s a white box covered in brown and black stains, with lots of deep scratch marks on it. The pictures/text on the packaging is messed up as a result too. Just seems like it’s been thrown around in a warehouse!

You’d probably think the item was used judging by the box, although the seals were intact and the item itself is fine. So aibu to be disappointed by the box being gross? It just made the experience that much less special and I’m pondering whether to mention it to the retailer or not although I doubt anything could be done.

Wouldn't bother me personally as long as the item itself was pristine, but I don't think you're being unreasonable per se. I just wouldn't be arsed enough to say anything about it personally.

Depends on the item. For some things a scrappy looking box isn’t an issue, but for something like, say, a designer handbag, a messed up box would dent its resale value further down the line.

I'd photograph it and go back to the retailer, if you buy shop soiled goods you expect a ten percent discount, should be the same online.

I think that’s a bit off for an expensive item. I’ve bought things from Amazon Warehouse which were marked down just because the box had either been opened (contents not used) or because the packaging was scruffy. The product itself was fine. And this was for quite inexpensive items. For a big ticket thing in a shop they’d have to mark it down if the packaging was marked usually.

Is the white box part a part that the item will be kept in it, like a display case/jewelry box etc? If so, I'd take pics and complain.

If its that the shipping box was dirty and its going to be thrown away, I wouldn't be bothered unless the item was damaged.

Is it an item thats resale value would be impacted by the box?
If so then yes do complain, if not then I wouldn't care

Is this the Amazon versus JL laptop?

This would really bother me, I would probably return it, especially at that price.
