Men in their 20's who don't smoke and have tattoos are in the minority?

Is it common for men in their 20's to have never smoked or vape, even in a social setting at all and to never have gotten any tattoo and never wants to get one?

Not especially unusual, no.

Changeyourfuckingcar · 28/10/2024 16:06

In my personal experience, it is a little uncommon, particularly as you’re including anyone who’s ever even tried smoking or is a social smoker. Tattoos are probably more 50:50.

I don't think I know anyone in their 20s who has ever smoked.

My DS are 25 and 22 and a few of their friends vape, but no smokers.

Tatts I'm not sure about.

My four sons, none of them vape or smoke and only one has one tattoo.

I have 2 sons, early 20s, neither smoke or vape, they are very heavily tattooed though.

Most of their friends aren't smokers or vapers either, I can only think of maybe 2 or 3 who vape, none who smoke. I'm pretty sure they all have tattoos as well.

So I would say the smoking/vaping thing would be easy, the tattoo thing, not so much.

Just did a quick check in the office. Of the 8 men under 30 in the office, 6 have never smoked / vaped as a habit, 4 have never tried it. 3 out of 8 have tattoos. 3 out of 8 have never smoked / vaped and don't have a tattoo.

Edit: And now I have to admit to then I've been Mumsnetting in working hours

My son hasn't smoked (well, I've smoked 5 ciggies in my life - but never inhaled! and I suspect he's the same) and has no tattoos. That's normal in his circle.

Smoking and vaping are highly correlated with socioeconomic status and education. Since we tend to associate mostly with people like us, we tend to know people who either smoke or don’t smoke. I would have no trouble finding a large number of men who have never smoked or vaped.

tattoos are more mainstream, but there are still rules. I know plenty of men with tattoos, but they are always in places that are covered by business casual attire. You only find out if you happen to see them at the gym or the pool.

Most of the men I know don't smoke/vape and don't have tattoos.

But almost all of them have smoked at some point - varying from regularly in their early 20s to an occasional one socially.

I'm not sure this is true of vaping - it is rampant in schools of all types. And smoking doesn't just mean cigarettes.

The majority of men in their 20s have no tattoos and the majority of men in their 20s neither smoke nor vape.

There's actually no age/sex category in which vapers/smokers or tattooed people would be in the majority.
