Am I being unreasonable to be shocked at a 4 week old baby being weaned?

I have just seen a profile on Bebo, where a mother has posted pictures of her baby being fed baby rice, with the caption "my little genius eating off a spoon at 4 weeks old". Am I being unreasonable to be judgy about this? The mother is training to be a nurse, so should really know better. I know that it's none of my business what other people do with their children, but it did shock me.

What an idiot. (the mother, not you).

Yanbu. I concur with callisto, what an idiot.

I think with something like that, it's not really about being shocked or judgy, it's about wondering if the mother knows the full facts.
YANBU to think 'oh dear'.

oh that would shock me too...With babies and children yes you should do things your own way but she sounds like she should still be at school!! Babies are born with a sucking reflex aren't they and i've had friends who've had to hold back well meaning granny with chocolate finger very early on but surely 4 wks and being a nurse?! should definately know better.

my ds2 was 8 weeks when he started having about two or three spoons of baby rice a day..ut he was a stonker and allergic to most milks..my GP insisted it would help him sleep!!! pah..he was just even more hungry!!

LookattheLottie · 25/04/2008 10:14

I find it a bit and

I've never heard of it being done, not at 4 weeks! Could there perhaps be some sort of medical reason behind it?

bluenosesaint · 25/04/2008 10:15

Agree with Kathy - tis not really about being shocked or judgey but about whether the parent knows the full facts (rather than the anecdotal "i was weaned at 2 days and i'm just fine".

I would be and about feeding a 4 week old solids if the parent were in receipt of the facts ...

So no, IMO, YANBU

QueenMeerkat · 25/04/2008 10:16

Kathy, I did wonder if she knew the full facts, or if she was blatantly ignoring them. I was very tempted to send her a message with a link, but couldn't think of a way to do it nicely without coming across as a total biatch, so I left it.

Maybe she is so dumb that she thinks that if he does something early, he is well developed?

With that genius caption, and all....

YANBU
I am sure this probably goes on more than we know. Poor baby, stupid mother. Hopefully as she goes further into her training she will realise her cock up.
