Costa should make it clear that cream or marshmallows cost extra

when buying hot chocolate.

Sad but true.

To my knowledge Costa hasn't even bothered trying to break into Australia after the Starbucks disaster. We have a little cafe/coffee shop pretty much everywhere so that may be the difference. Go the little shops!

DoTheDinosaurStomp · 27/10/2024 02:23

And they don't even put the marshmallows in the hot chocolate in my two local Costa's, they come in a little jar on the side! I thought they're meant to go into the hot chocolate so that they go all melty and gooey! You can't even pop them in the hot chocolate yourself because the mountain of cream is on top and it would mean digging about and making a mess and the cup overflowing. I rarely order the marshmallows but when I do, I always forget to specify "in the drink" and end up leaving the marshmallows as I don't like them on their own. Anyway, rant over lol.

I agree, the tone suggest it's included. Like if they ask if I want milk in my tea....they're not charging me extra for that.

No, but it’s assumed you want milk. People like me who don’t take milk pay the same as people who do. Maybe I should start whingeing about that on Mumsnet?

You're adding extra things to the drink of course you'll pay more xx
You'd pay more for adding bacon to a cheeseburger in Maccies xx

This is not true. In most coffee shops, those things are already factored into the drink anyway. And if you don't have them, they're leaving them off rather than adding something extra. Even independent coffee shops work this way.

I am so tired of this culture where nobody takes responsibility for anything and nobody seems to have any common sense. If something is extra it is going to cost money. Cream is extra. Marshmallows are extra.
Plus there's a menu with prices right there.

Not everywhere. Starbucks you don’t pay extra for cream with hot chocolate.

wiesowarum · 27/10/2024 03:49

I struggle to see why anyone would think it's not going to cost more to have extra toppings.

GreyCarpet · 27/10/2024 04:00

I don't go to Costa. I haven't been to one for probably 10 years.

Even I could tell you that cream and marshmallows would be extra. They are in most places. And if they're not in one or two, then great! But you could just ask before accepting to be sure.

And as for the person who duped into accepting extras due to the tone of voice of the person asking...

Seriously?

I also despise this culture of incompetence.

purplebeansprouts · 27/10/2024 04:02

Sliceofrice · 27/10/2024 01:00

Whilst I do agree it used to be listed clearly under extras, I don't agree it is now because of the rotating, electronic signs. I can't process the menu quick enough before it changes and have found myself being forced to make quick choices because the menu changes too quickly, so if you're not used to it, I guess it could be too difficult to see.

I'm with this one. Originally I thought.. but it's listed.. then I remembered how impossible it is to use their menu now it's a screen that keeps moving to something else just as you've started looking at the bit you want.

Your first mistake is going to Costa full stop! Owned by Coca-Cola. Awful place with disgusting, overly processed and sugary drinks. Support local cafés and businesses

Thank you for ordering me how to spend my money, but no.

pavementgerms · 27/10/2024 04:36

Learc · 27/10/2024 01:04

I looked at the menu on the wall behind the counter and saw the price of the hot chocolate. I didn't notice that cream is extra.

That's on you. Take some responsibility!

marmamumma · 27/10/2024 02:09

You silly billies. Do what we did in Australia, ignore them and go to your local lovely family owned coffee shop. There are still Starbucks hanging around here and there, but the majority closed within a couple of years. I don't know anyone that goes to one except in desperation. Terrible overpriced coffee. ( we take our coffee seriously in Australia - we even invented McCafe - which is heaps better than Starbucks btw)

Why is it that every Australian I meet is so fucking superior about their "foodiness"? It's unbearable.

" your local lovely family owned coffee shop"

Right, cos that exists everywhere. So oblivious.

I would always pick an indie where available but it frequently is not.

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 27/10/2024 05:16

I long for the days where coffee culture just meant coffee. Not crammed full of fattening crap. Syrups, cream and marshmallows contributioning to the obesity crisis we have.
Cream and bloody marshmallows? Is everyone 6 years old?
They should charge £££ for crap add-ons

TheKoalaWhoCould · 27/10/2024 05:19

It’s written on a massive board, right in front of you - that’s pretty clear?

Ottersmith · 27/10/2024 05:19

Costa needs to fuck off in the bin. It's Macdonalds for coffee with overpriced coffee and poor service. Wish the UK had more independent cafes.

Whatsitreallylike · 27/10/2024 05:22

I got a hot chocolate yesterday from one of those mobile places at a festival. They didn’t charge extra for cream and marshmallows. Admittedly I don’t buy it often, but I assumed they came with, that’s what it shows in all the pictures 😂

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 27/10/2024 05:23

If they offer extras then logic dictates that they’re going to cost more.

If you’re not being charged for the extras then that’s because the price has already been increased to reflect them, so they make money on people who don’t add extras.

Don’t local people work at Costa? They need those jobs too.

Bjorkdidit · 27/10/2024 05:41

It's not clear what's extras and what's included.

What about Subway? You have to choose each element separately. There's no information about which is included in the price and which is extra but I'm sure that I've got to the end and it was more than I thought it would be so some of the choices must cost more than what the price stated on the board includes.

If something is extra they should say the price when offering it rather than tricking people into spending more than they thought they would because the menu board is deliberately positoned, confusing and changing so people don't get chance to look at it properly before ordering.
