To wonder where people go to look at appliances now before buying if they don’t like Curry’s

Trying to buy a big fridge freezer but there is nothing in Curry’s that we like. Just realised in our area there appears to be nowhere else where you can view stock before buying. I’ve no intention of spending a lot of money on something I haven’t looked at. So where do people shop or does everybody order appliances without looking at them these days?😳

John Lewis (bought my DW here )

Anything else like the cooker or WM which were replaced a couple of years back were from AO . So didn't see them IRL.

Costco have display appliances but I haven't bought from there

Well re American fridge freezers several were shocking quality-seals peeling off, logos coming away from the door, loads of Chinese brands, badly designed so drawers couldn’t be pulled out, not many unplumbed, freezers sections(with drawers underneath French style that hold next to nothing),few brands or models that we were interested in….

Bought it unseen from AO. My old one died and I needed a new one sharpish. You can see enough videos and pictures online to work out if you like it. It’s not like a sofa that you need to sit on.

I usually buy from AO, so I choose one i
potentially want. then
google it to see which retailer sells it, check if it's in my nearest store..

pinkroses79 · 26/10/2024 23:41

I like looking in Currys, it has the best selection! However, I also look in John Lewis sometimes, and we have an independent shop as well which is quite good.

@TheDowagerCountessofPembroke

i disagree. I want to physically check it out.

We have a couple of "independants" locally, both under the Euronics banner.

The one we used was actually fabulous with outstanding customer service.

Need to see and measure exact size, door sweep of opening, quality( so glad we saw some of the crappy quality ones as we’d have been so pissed off after ordering),unbelievably some of the French style ones don’t show pictures of the freezer online…

Just thinking back, I've bought a fridge, 2x freezers, at least 2x washing machines and tumble dryers, an oven, a microwave and a dishwasher without seeing them in a shop.

No disasters. A couple of things that I might have changed, but generally photos, information and reviews online are enough to go on.

Our Curry's has a really poor selection and the staff couldn’t give less of a shit. I’ve been in 3 in our area and they’re all dreadful.

I’ve always bought white goods online without seeing in person first 😳 most of my furniture too actually.

But anyway if I did want to see it first I would have to go to Curry’s or try an independent local shop, as my nearest John Lewis is 4 hours away.

L00byL00 · 26/10/2024 23:46

John Lewis has a better quality selection but not many on display.

I wouldn't be worried about logos coming off the doors, they are just stickers. Same as on cars.

I don’t know what has happened to Curry’s it’s awful now. Poor quality damaged stock, scruffy stores with staff who have poor stock knowledge and aren’t the slightest bit interested. They clearly have a monopoly so you’d expect better.

Could try Ikea, their stuff is proper brands but they aren't allowed to advertise which ones due to their deal with the manufacturers. Have guarantees on too.

Nope seen several models online but nowhere to look at them. Having seen what we saw in Curry’s today I definitely want to see stock before buying.

No they were metal badges that were sticking out. Looked awful and would catch.

I need to see these things in real life, especially furniture. We moved into a new build a few years back and some of the white goods we saw in RL were very disappointing.

Itsalemon · 26/10/2024 23:53

I can't imagine bothering to look in real life. I buy everything from AO or JL on line and it's always been fine. Even beds and sofas which will send some posters off into an unholy flat spin

The only ‘customers’ in the shops are only there to look at the products which they then order from AO?
