To say eating gluten free food sucks

Stickseas0n · 25/10/2024 18:20

It's been a month since I was diagnosed and I'm so miserable as I'm so hungry.
Not to mention how expensive it is for much smaller portions.
I've gained so much weight in the month, my iron is low as shit, I'm struggling at work because as soon as I eat any foods I'm on the toilet.
I'm just so fed up Sad

The bread is generally shit.

The speciality free-from stuff is often horrible and expensive.

But there is hope
You can do roast dinner - minus the yorkies
Curry, rice and dal
Fish and chips - use tempura batter
Sausage mash and peas
etc

What are you really missing?

dementedpixie · 25/10/2024 18:27

There's lots of naturally gluten free foods. What are you missing the most as there might be a decent alternative?

talkmedownhealth · 25/10/2024 18:30

Aagg I agree a bit. I pop into bakeries for my daughter or a coffee and am SO jealous.
i have a rec for our fave gf pasta / bread it that helps.
I’m thinking about trying a bread maker.
Over time you kind of find some other snacks and recipes that work…. Honest!

Stickseas0n · 25/10/2024 18:31

I think it's dinners and snacky bits I'm struggling with mostly
Have had chicken and rice for the past 3 days I'm getting sick of it
Haven't really any basics in atm to make something else, went to heat up beans and all the ones I've got contain wheat

Can't seem to find any sausages that don't contain wheat either, it's a mind field

I just want a normal chocolate digestive and didn't realise being so restricted would have me crying over it 😂

talkmedownhealth · 25/10/2024 18:31

I have an allergy rather than celiac so it is possibly less serious… but i found once I adjusted I felt so much better - I could think better / bowels more regular / lost loads of bloating
good luck OP

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 25/10/2024 18:33

Morrisons 'the best' sausages are GF

Morrisons also do a good chocolate digestive.

Gonegirl7 · 25/10/2024 18:34

Sausages - most of the sainsburys ones are fine.

Never found baked beans I can’t eat???

pasta - you can find some really good ones
bread - never going to be the same but you get more used to it as the years go on. I like the warburtons tiger bread.

what is absolute HELL for me is going into a Gails bakery. It’s torture.

pizza I can find loads of places (our local is a Fireaway, also pizza express do)

Chinese take away you’ll never be able to eat again. Wagamamas is possible. Leon is great if you’re near one of those

Malteasers I really miss.

CMOTDibbler · 25/10/2024 18:34

It is massively overwhelming at first, but you will settle into it. There are lots of GF sausages, which supermarket do you shop in?

I’d really recommend going to a big Sainsbury’s and checking out their free from section. Some have a whole side of an aisle now.

my fave pasta is freefrom fusilli (Sainsbury’s)
and fave bread for toast is schar white.

I find curries brill. And some stir fry sauces are gluten free.

SoupDragon · 25/10/2024 18:34

just make them with GF flour. They work just as well.

polkadotpixie · 25/10/2024 18:35

It's absolutely crap, I completely sympathise

I mainly miss snack food too but I've got used to the pasta now. The bread is invariably awful though

LakelandDreams · 25/10/2024 18:36

I'm gluten free too and I'm afraid you need to change your mindset drastically. It's not about eating the foods you've always eaten but the expensive, processed gluten free versions. You need to eat naturally gluten free, unprocessed foods.

So breakfast might be eggs with vegetables, or yogurt with nuts, seeds and berries. Lunch is fish or chicken with salad and veg, dinner is sweet potato curry with rice etc. Make your own seed bars, chocolate chia puddings, fruit mousses etc. There are loads of amazing recipes out there that don't have gluten in. Of course you'll be hungry and feel crap if you are eating gluten free bread and cakes. Just don't bloody eat bread and cakes!

Why no Chinese takeaway? I get egg fried rice and sweet & sour tofu regularly with no ill effects

WYorkshireRose · 25/10/2024 18:36

Whether she's your cup of tea or not, I'd really recommend following Megan McKenna on Instagram. She's GF and posts lots of videos/meal ideas that she's adapted to be GF. Think she also has a cookbook out.

triballeader · 25/10/2024 18:36

Asda sausages are gluten free and worth eating. Same prices as their other better sausages too. Are you a confident cook? Asking as dh had to cut out all gluten. Horribly allergic to the point he was biopsied for Cealiac disease and yes it’s a steep learning curve. promise bread is the best of a rough bunch but most bread replacements leave dh asking for the packaging as it’s more edible.

the best yorkies are gluten free - need corn flour which makes the puff up like magic, crisp and light

Fail proof simple recipe - I make with milk

SoupDragon · 25/10/2024 18:37

I agree that lots of sausages are actually GF.

I'm told that the GF hobnobs are really good if you need a biscuit.

polkadotpixie · 25/10/2024 18:36

Because most soy sauce contains gluten and contamination is almost impossible to avoid.

Lots of Thai soy sauce is GF so you can make your own.

DeanElderberry · 25/10/2024 18:38

In Ireland Aldi do gluten-free sausages and a range of unhealthy but tasty chicken things in the freezer cabinets - goujons, chicken breasts. Lidl have 'promise bread' which is the best of the g-f breads (not the highest praise) and I was thrilled to find their deluxe gnocchi are made with rice flour, not wheat. I quite like Lidl and Aldi chocoate digestives, too.

Gluten free pasta is almost all disappointing with the exception of buckweat (not a wheat) pasta if you can get it. Otherwise it's a case of finding quick and acceptable things to do with rice and spuds.

Lemonngingert · 25/10/2024 18:38

Try and move away from the ultra processed gluten free alternatives . Things that will help with hunger are nuts , avocados , pulses - things like tins of chickpeas and humous . Jacket potatoes or sweet potatoes are quick to microwave .Also look at making things like flapjacks with gluten free oats - very quick or cookies with oat flour - quick to make .

Friend of mine was diagnosed as a child and we are in our fifties . Her mum was told to feed her vegetarian . Whilst quite wierd advice I think if you look at some veggie recipe books you will find lots of interesting alternatives

Phineyj · 25/10/2024 18:38

www.mumsnet.com/talk/autoimmune_disease/5019243-would-anyone-be-up-for-a-coeliac-chat-thread I think you will find this thread handy.

It takes a bit of patience but there is a bunch of tolerable alternatives. I agree with the high prices and small sizes though.

I've resorted to eating sushi a lot personally.

When I feel down I remind myself the effects were very unpleasant; and I get an M&S coffee and walnut cake from their gluten free section and eat it all myself!

NoSourDough · 25/10/2024 18:40

If anything you will loose weight going gluten free because it should encourage you to eat unprocessed whole foods. You will get used to it, but you have to stop thinking about ready made stuff and think more along the lines of fresh x

My friend was diagnosed a year or so back and it is tough going.

I can help with one bit though - Tesco finest sausages are all gluten free and pretty good (so is their chorizo).

Some other hits from the last year:
Goodfellas gluten free frozen garlic pizza bread
Nairn do a whole range of gluten free biscuits crackers and oatcakes (we've eaten these for years just because they're good)

I've just spotted McVities do gluten free hobnobs and chocolate hobnobs if they might help your biscuit craving.

From seeing what my friend has gone through, it does get easier as you find your feet with it and find new treats and things but also let yourself be a bit cross about it too. Best of luck.

Phineyj · 25/10/2024 18:40

We eat Heck gf sausages. DH (can eat what he likes, lucky bastard) really likes them too.

Skyrainlight · 25/10/2024 18:40

Some of my favs are the Tesco lentil pasta, schar seeded loaf is good toasted (not as good as bread), whole creations garlic bread is excellent. Also try brands like Gosh that seem to be gluten free as standard (falafels, falafachini), these paired with salad and hummus make a good lunch for me.

It does suck, when I'm trying to be positive I see it as a good way to eat more whole foods and avoid processed food.
