AIBU?

To not want to go shopping for my bridesmaid dress while pregnant?

Hi I am currently 5 months pregnant and due to give birth in August my best friend is getting married in April 09 and I am bridesmaid. She wants to go bridesmaid dress shopping in July when I will be 7 months pregnant whereas I wold rather wait until after the baby is here which still gives us at least 6 months to find and order one. I have to buy my own dress which I am quite happy to do but obviously I would like to try it on before I pay for it in case it looks nice on the hanger and hideous on. AIBU should I just keep my mouth shut and go along and buy the dress and hope it is ok when I finally get into normal clothes again?

Are you the only bridesmaid? There might be reasons pertaining to the others meaning that July is the only option. Or maybe she's hoping to get a dress in the end of summer sales to save you some money?

Maybe I'm just being kind though - I think it's totally ridiculous to buy a dress when you have no idea what size you will be! I think you should buy it at the last possible date to ensure it will fit you.

Now I'd be prepared to say put up and shut up to you if she was paying - her prerogative and all. However as she is expecting you to pay you have to be able to buy something you like and that fits you!!!

You can LOOK at 7 months preg, but don't buy anything. That would be silly. Only thing is, with bridesmaid dresses they have to be ordered well in advance and then taken in/out just before the wedding. They take something like 6 months to arrive after ordering them. Maybe longer. Ring the shop and check when they think you should get started, and explain the situation. They might say not to bother looking until Oct/Nov.

Why does she want to buy them nearly a year in advance? Why are you paying yourself?

No need to buy a 'bridesmaids dress' bridesmaid dress though if you see what I mean? For my wedding and my sister's we got dresses made from patterns bought in John Lewis - my dress for her wedding was made from start to finish in a couple of weeks including alterations at a local dressmakers. Looked fab and v professional too. Total cost about £80 including gorgeous slub silk material, pattern and making. Much more sensible as even though you will have the baby around Sept time your figure will change a lot in the few months following that

Or buy one from Monsoon / COast etc a couple of weeks before when you know what shape you are!!!

YANBU, but equally once the baby is born you probably won't even be able to think about going to try on dresses for a couple of months and that may make it too late for ordering etc. (could never work out why they need 6-12 months for these things!!!)

Could you actually suggest you go and have a look at some dresses now whilst you're still not too big to try them on (if you've got the energy!) to give you an idea? - may be that she wants to get on with choosing her dress and wants to make sure yours matches hers?
