Salaries

I've been out of the workforce for 10 years as I have been running my own business. Sadly this is looking like it's needing to close and I've been looking for FT job. It seems that salaries haven't changed a bit in 10 years and almost as if they have gone backwards.

My background is sales and marketing and I keep seeing mid level roles for £25-£28k and a smattering of roles £35k+. What has happened?

Aibu or has there been no salary growth in 10 years in this sector?!?

I worked as a digital marketing manager on the outskirts of Manchester, left 5 years ago and my salary was £38.5k. Which I thought was low at the time! Roughly what area of the country are you looking in?

I'm in the Midlands. My last role 10 years ago was £50k for account manager, I cannot find anything advertising anywhere near this salary for this level. Even over £30k seems hard to find.

Following the pandemic a lot of roles have gone hybrid or remote so I'd widen your search if I were you. After the pandemic I found a lot of companies restructured so you'll either have a sales role or a marketing role but not that duality anymore if that makes sense.

The skill set is definitely transferable so you could also try your hand at something new too!

Have you tried looking through LinkedIn for jobs or networking?

@sunlover1123 thanks so much. Yes I've looked across linked in and various recruiters. I am just amazed that salaries don't seemed to have shifted much in 10 years.

Salaries have definitely stalled and noticed jobs wanting a lot more for a lot less.

I have a friend who drifted into marketing and ended up spending 20 years in an amazing job. 60k plus endless wonderful trips to luxury events and freebies. London.
She got made redundant last year and spent a few months doing nothing before looking for another role. She has found nothing. Says the same as you. It’s all 25-30k demanding roles.
I have a niece in London working very hard in a marketing role for £30k too.
Anecdotal I know but sounds like a difficult sector at the moment.
