If the UK is made to pay reparations where will that leave other nations who were or indeed still are involved in slavery?

Thanks! Thats probably not meant in a good way.

But yes, in the unlikely event that I ever became politician, I think I would be half decent.

I'm good at standing up for people and for saying a point anyway.

Edited

Politicians are supposed to stand up for more than just one group, but I digress.

I guess what we could do is rebrand some of the foreign aid budget as "reparations" that way it won't cost any extra.
Although it will backfire - many people already dislike the fact that a percentage of GDP is spend on foreign aid and that will put it to the forefront of their minds.

Foreign aid tends not to go to the countries asking for reparation at the moment, though.

Yet another thread that's ended up completely derailed by a single person posting endless, nonsensical yet aggressive posts. Mumsnet is becoming unusable - what's the point of getting involved in this crap? Or even bothering to read it?

It would be okay if the strong opinions were backed by a detailed historical understanding but alas no.

We can just take it off Afghanistan and Ukraine then, I'm sure they'll understand. The need of former colonies is more pressing.

Maybe just extra tax tax tax RF, national trust, the rich folk with historical titles and huge landed estates, stables with more than 2 horses, hunting lodges ….
Anyone coming to UK last few decades should be exempt!!! Newcomers have had nothing to be sorry for.

NoisyDenimShaker · 24/10/2024 19:25

It's a shameless money grab. I hope the government doesn't give in.

Interesting take.

Would you care to expand on this 'money grab' or even the 'shameless' bit please?

LookItsMeAgain · 26/10/2024 15:32

BCBird · 24/10/2024 19:28

The shame is surely that of our predecessors not the victims?

Who are the victims you're referring to here?

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 15:34

But you can't tax people who have had nothing to do with the slave trade, or whose ancestors didn't. Some very wealthy people were active in the anti slavery movement. It really would be impossible to work this system.

MightSoundCrassButItsFactual · 26/10/2024 15:35

what kind of reparations we are talking here

If you need some help with reading, I'm sure there's somewhere you can get some lessons! 😂

Your comment wasn't funny in any way.

How juvenile to suggest that someone can't read.

Instead of answering her question

@sparemeatyre intetestingly whilst the well off and titled gained the most form slavery and colonialism, many many ordinary people were also involved. Owning a slave or a part share in a slave or shares in East India Company (the company that started off mass colonialisation by the English) was a common investment for ordinary people with a small amount of money to invest - like we might have a small stocks and shares ISA today.

UCL did a fascinating research project on it a few years ago.

Which part of history are you referring to now?

Let's talk about it

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 26/10/2024 15:52

Can we knock off the money spent on the Royal Navy intercepting other nations’ slave ships and turning them round? Or the land forces who interrupted the supply lines and suppressed the slave markets?

To say nothing of the soldiers and sailors who lost their lives in those campaigns.

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 15:53

My ancestors were farm labourers. I hardly think they invested in stocks and shares. They were too busy trying to make ends meet. And the ones in Ireland were being shoved off their land. Probably starving or near starving.

Why don't you post your own opinion on what's happening, instead of just popping on to insult others

Danajune11 · 26/10/2024 15:56

Rainbunny · 26/10/2024 14:31

Fortunately, this is a completely fantastical proposition. Reparations will never happen becasue we have a democratic form of government and the voting British public will never, ever vote to sacrifice their tax money as a punishement for crimes we haven't committed. I say this as a Labour voting Anglo-Irish liberal.

Even the most left-wing elements of the Labour party know this, proposing it in Parliament would be madness, it would get next to no votes and it would be the fastest way to ensure people vote out the government in the next election.

Got to love the commenters trying to make others feel a sense of national guilt for things they've not done. People have an intrinsic sense of fair play and being asked to accept punishment for things we haven't done just doesn't work and never will.

Any empathy at all for what the countries seeking reparations from the UK went through?

I've Reported you YET again for abuse.

Clippyklop · 26/10/2024 16:00

They can ask . Not demand . Knowing this weak soft Government it will probably say yes.

NewGreenDuck · 26/10/2024 16:01

So @Danajune11 if you live in the UK and these reparations cause your life to become extremely difficult, maybe even impossible, what then? Will you be asking the government to do something about it? Or what?

How dare you say that. I've reported you for insulting me.

I've also reported you for where you ridiculed another poster. I stood up for that poster.
