I will never watch his programme again. What a threat. But seriously, he really gives me the ick. I have heard so many tales of his womanising. He just feels stuck in the 2000s. AIBU to ask which celebrities you think have had their day? Zoe Ball (too 90's and eager), Tess Daly (stiff and odd), Claudia Winkleman (obvious and boring), or is it just me?

I laughed at his store cupboard fish cakes which he then sprinkled with feta cheese because everyone has a block of feta in the fridge.

He did say "if you have it ..." should he never cook with anything if we can't be sure everyone in the world has it?

The lamb was described as suitable for a special dinner party event not an everyday dinner- a joint of lamb shoulder is around 11 a kilo, probably the cheapest lamb cut

The whole point of the fish cake dish was store cupboard ingredients. Like a tin of tuna and sweetcorn which are pretty basic. Then he had to ponce it up with feta.

Christ he annoys the tits off me.

I wont watch him.
The one occasion i did recently (ill and couldn't be arsed to get up and find the remote when he came on) he tested the ripeness of an advocado by crushing it to fuck in his fist 🙄🙄

My eyes rolled back so hard they nearly went down the back of the sofa.

🤣

Don't mind Jamie, really enjoyed his What to eat now series being a home grower, but we can't watch the part where he samples his own food after each recipe... the Uuums and Mmmss and close ups of him eating while we all wait with bated breath to hear his opinion 😖and as for his "pinch" of salt and "glug" of olive oil .....
Amanda Holden doesn't do it for me. Not sure why, I'm sure she's a lovely lady.

I feel the same about Amanda Holden....perhaps a bit too desperate?

I think she kind of comes across like she'd be a bitchy mean girl type, which is why I've never warmed to her, but actually when you read those "celebrities you've met" kind of threads, everyone seems to say she's perfectly nice, so who knows!

MrMucker · 22/10/2024 16:08

He uses the word "silky" at least 5 times per episode of anything whatsoever, and every time I wish he just wouldn't.

Soukmyfalafel · 22/10/2024 16:09

He's OK. His recipes are out of touch with the normal budget, but most TV chefs are middle class and out of touch with what working class families can afford. I like them, but a lot of the time they are treats. I'm a good home cook, but he has a habit of adding random ingredients to things I can't get anywhere local. I do find this really annoying. Most of TV is pretty MC though, especially the BBC. Even the programmes designed to help and advise people tend to pick the classic MC family more often than not. Years ago when they had programmes like changing rooms etc, it was more average.

I like what he did with school dinners - it didn't go far enough IMO.

I'm not keen on the nepotism, but then you can't exclude his kids from following their chosen career path either, it's just a bit shit they have to by pass the working hard bit.

I don't know anything about his wife. I'm not keen on her kids clothing brand though.

ThewaytoAmarula · 22/10/2024 16:20

"Hero" as a verb, as in "This is a hearty dish that really heroes the humble potato" 🙄

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/10/2024 16:22

I'd also like to see a spin off for MPs who have no clue & seem to think people on benefits can live off 30p meals. Perhaps set in tower block flats with a few 'stars' to dip into how each is managing. They could throw in some crisis like items breaking and no savings to replace, min wage job insecurity or DWP stress of sanctions or PIP assessments.

Now that would be worth watching!

Obsessedwithlamps · 22/10/2024 16:36

I don’t watch JO, but why is feta poncy???I cook with feta and use it in salads all the time.

It was done years ago with Michael Portillo, first time I had a bit of admiration for him

Cant remember what it was called, he didnt get on so well as I recall

soupfiend · 22/10/2024 16:52

Theres nothing new and no new ideas in the world, people think they're ground breaking to suggest things like the below but its been done!

If you're old enough to remember stuff like this!

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2003/jul/30/bbc.broadcasting

Portillo spends a week in the real world

1.30pm: Conservative MP Michael Portillo has spent a week as a single parent of four with a budget of £80 for a BBC2 documentary, writes Jason Deans.

Sourisblanche · 22/10/2024 17:08

He got lucky in the 90s during the filming of a documemtary about the River Cafe, if not for that, I don't think we would have heard of him.

He has said himself in interviews that he knows he had a lucky break.

I have a tiny connection to the family and the Oliver marriage seems solid. I don’t know why people have to be so mean about other people’s relationships.

I find him fine to watch and have a few books (mostly from charity shops) and the recipes work. Having said all that, I think he can lay off the new books now. No one needs another of his cookbooks - see also Mary Berry who seems to bring one out every year.

midlifeattheoasis · 22/10/2024 17:13

God he was annoying last night. And I don't give a shit about Buddy or River or any of his kids!!

And? I know this is MN and of course you all have Feta in your fridges at all times but my point was his recipe was for basic store cupboard ingredients.

I kinda do though. I don't think that's posh or middle class. It's just nice in an omelette. To be fair he also said if you have it...

Hotafternoon · 22/10/2024 18:43

Gnarly, joyous, joyful, beautiful, gorgeous, the number of times he uses these words in 30 minutes means I no longer watch him, it was maddening. Also, I'm another who hates seeing his hands all over the food.

On the plus side, I made his cheese and chive scones a few weeks ago and they were bloody lovely.

I love it in an omelette. Great for adding flavour with just a little when you’re a post menopausal woman like me with an increasing waistline!

I find the notion some seem to have that working class people don’t eat certain things rather patronising to be honest. Like we’re not capable of expanding our horizons and interests or something. I’ve literally lived hand to mouth. Now that my living standards would be considered middle class, am I a class traitor to enjoy cooking and eating well?

No it makes you a proper mumsnetter.

PanettoneSoprano · 22/10/2024 19:58

I liked watching his programmes when I was a teenager, in fact I think he is the one that got me interested in cooking. I don't watch anymore though because it's all a bit too high energy for me now haha.

His 5 ingredients book is good and I use it quite frequently.

Is that the ooh lamb curry, give it to me HOT! one?
where he puts on that fake patois? It’s so so cringe, awful 😣

Yes that one. It was hands down the most embarrassing thing I have ever watched. The faux Jamaican accent was just next level cringe. How would you ever leave the house after that, when anyone sensible would just become a hermit and never be seen again?

I feel second hand embarrassment every time I think about it 😳

My dad was born in the 30s in South London, in a slum, no toilet, one room, lived like that until he joined national service, never had a tooth brush.

He loves a bit of feta, and red pesto, whipping up dishes from all over the place in his late 80s.

He is not aware he should have stuck to sour UHT milk (because thats all they could afford) and gristly cheap meat.

Keep in your lane WC people!!
