If Jamie says gnarly one more time....

I will never watch his programme again. What a threat. But seriously, he really gives me the ick. I have heard so many tales of his womanising. He just feels stuck in the 2000s. AIBU to ask which celebrities you think have had their day? Zoe Ball (too 90's and eager), Tess Daly (stiff and odd), Claudia Winkleman (obvious and boring), or is it just me?

The gnarly got on my nerves a tiny bit but I like him. I like Claudia too.
If I didn’t like JO I wouldn’t watch his shows.

Absolutely but people seek out things to hate. Rage viewing.

Cattery · 22/10/2024 13:28

I wish he’d fuck off to be honest

BustingBaoBun · 22/10/2024 13:30

I like Jamie! (or at least I tolerate him!)

Gnarly repeated 7 times in a few minutes was extremely annoying. And those fish cakes looked revolting. But, to me, tinned potatoes have a peculiar taste so that's probably why....
When he was making it all into balls, it just looked like tinned muck to me bleurghhh

I love his ministry of food cook book. A really basic one that anyone can use .

Agree this book is great definitely the most usable one he did.
Meals in 30 minutes all took an hour, and the 15 minute meals took 30!

StarSlinger · 22/10/2024 13:34

His gnarly talk and wazzing things in the blender and banging things in the oven drives me mad.

But tbh he gets on my tits generally.

I like him...his recipes work, I don't care about celeb gossip, I just want a nice dish that works, and he manages it, for me, anyway.

Me too.

I also liked how he tried to introduce healthy food, give jobs to unemployed youngsters and make cooking from scratch more accessible.

Don't know why that makes him a pariah round here. Weird.

GuestSpeakers · 22/10/2024 13:47

I like him. I grew up with parents who couldn't cook and thought it was a magical talent some people had. Then I lived with a housemate in my early 20s who was a great cook. She'd grown up cooking but told me to buy a Jamie Oliver book and just follow the instructions as his recipes never failed her. I've definitely improved but even my first attempts came out well.

Way back when he was patronising poor people (and awarding himself extra points if the poor person was fat). I really wanted him to do a programme where he and his entire family moved into flat in an econoncally disadvantaged area. The flat would have in it the standard items afforded to those around. (As in the kitchen would equiped with one or two knives and a few pots and pans and not chef's knives and pots and pans identified by a name). In the cupboard would be ordinary supplies the average person has) and obviously a flat screen TV, he was so critical about.

My plan was, he would stay there for a month and only have access to the average monthly budget of families in the area, from which he would finals life - paid rent and bills etc

I'd be interested to see what he'd have cooked then.

Would he have wipped up a feast every night and entertained the kids and never turned on that TV? Would he have spent the money on ingredients and then been confused as to why there was no electricity to use the cooker? Would he have paid the bills and gone to the butcher in the bus and been shocked to discovered he could afforrd a leg of lamb?
So many possibilities - and we'll never know because I sadly didn't work in TV.

This would be a great show and certainly highlight a chefs talent. He'd probably be grateful for a fewer pots when he's got to do his own cleaning & washing up.

I'd also like to see a spin off for MPs who have no clue & seem to think people on benefits can live off 30p meals. Perhaps set in tower block flats with a few 'stars' to dip into how each is managing. They could throw in some crisis like items breaking and no savings to replace, min wage job insecurity or DWP stress of sanctions or PIP assessments.

StarSlinger · 22/10/2024 13:50

At least he has stopped telling poor people to go down the park and pick some herbs instead of watching their big TVs.

LaLoba · 22/10/2024 13:53

I don’t have any of his cookbooks (although an Italian friend who is a chef has some of his his books in his home kitchen, so I’d call that a good recommendation) but if I’m looking for a recipe online I’ll go to his first as they are reliably good.
I admire him for his attempts to improve school dinners. The fact that so many people are/were enraged by his efforts to feed kids with less junk is a sad indictment of British attitudes to feeding children, IMO.

TodayandThursday · 22/10/2024 09:43

Ooooo can you please post the link for that. I can't find it anywhere.

I came to ask the same 😂

Soupagain · 22/10/2024 13:55

I’m not a fan or Jamie Oliver, Claudia Winkleman (dire on Film…) or her bestie Victoria Coren Mitchell who is just a total cringe fest (her occasional journalism is so bad) but I suppose more likeable than her brother Giles who is simply awful.

Dr Brian Cox is another one who should give it a rest and let someone else have a go at presenting Astronomy programs he’s pretty annoying and his mate Dara O’Briain who is not funny but merely laughs at his own jokes and repeats what other have said.

I don’t watch a lot of TV to be honest and am not a celebrity fan really. I did think on watching have I got news for you last week that I do like Phil Wang and Hannah Fry is lovely.

Movinghouseatlast · 22/10/2024 13:56

I like him. All his recipes I've tried work. His Superfood books are fantastic, very healthy and delicious recipes.

His love if Italy isn't fake, he genuinely loves Italy from what I've read. His first Italy book has some fabulous recipes in it.

He isn't at all from a posh background, his parents ran a pub, The Cricketers in Clavering. His home in Essex is near there so he's stuck to his roots in that respect. Yes he's rich so he has a big house. I'd have a big house if I was rich too.

I agree that gnarly is an irritating term though!

Mistymorin · 22/10/2024 14:01

I can take JO in small doses. Who I cannot abide is Gennaro, his food is good but I wish he can just shut up, he is too over the top!

MainStreetOrHighStreet · 22/10/2024 14:01

I don't mind him, but that lentil soup thing the other chef made was essentially a swamp, and the gloop that JO put under the lamb looked like digitally enhanced ReadyBrek.

We have a few of his cookbooks and use them more than books by anyone else, but yeah, the Nonnas and the adorable childer can get in the sea.

ThornVampire · 22/10/2024 14:13

Aposterhasnoname · 22/10/2024 12:54

This show needs making. It’ll be a ratings smash. Any tv execs out there?

and with him working 50 hours a week and running round after dc

Dollybantree · 22/10/2024 14:18

I stopped watching him when he was still in his “pukka” phase in the 00’s! It’s “gnarly”now is it?

I find him very fake.

soupfiend · 22/10/2024 14:20

I really like Jamie and Claudia

I think he was absolutely right about the school meals campaign and people are more interested in quibbling about a middle class background (who cares) and seemingly making up stuff about his marriage (?)

However he does squash things with his hands too much and I agree about the word gnarly, I know what he means but he doesnt have to apply it to everything

I'll have to watch this on catch up didnt know it was on

He probably would have coped fine, why would you think he wouldnt

Cooks/chefs know how to make meals out of most things in most contexts, dont you?

I never found him patronising to poor people, given I was one at the time.

Lakeyloo · 22/10/2024 14:25

Don't mind Jamie, really enjoyed his What to eat now series being a home grower, but we can't watch the part where he samples his own food after each recipe... the Uuums and Mmmss and close ups of him eating while we all wait with bated breath to hear his opinion 😖and as for his "pinch" of salt and "glug" of olive oil .....
Amanda Holden doesn't do it for me. Not sure why, I'm sure she's a lovely lady.

Apollonia1 · 22/10/2024 14:32

I like Jamie! I haven't watched his shows in years, but he used to make even the most boring ingredients look delicious.
Someone on here pointed out that he puts chilli in everything. Now that it has been pointed out, I see it's true. I love chilli-hot food, so his recipes suit my taste.

StarSlinger · 22/10/2024 14:56

I laughed at his store cupboard fish cakes which he then sprinkled with feta cheese because everyone has a block of feta in the fridge.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 22/10/2024 15:06

Because everyone has a block of feta in the fridge.

ummm… I never don’t have a block of feta.

(See also cheddar, Parmesan, a tub of Philadelphia, marmite and a jar of capers)

I’ll go sit in the middle class corner of shame.

Softpebbles · 22/10/2024 15:14

Last nights show was particularly annoying!

The fish cakes looked grim, and then what’s with icecream in a wrap, add chocolate sauce and maple syrup?! Just give the kid a scoop of ice cream, it had turned to liquid after he’d messed with it anyway!
