everyone always turns off a gas hob BEFORE taking the pot off?

My husband keeps leaving the gas hob burning after taking off the pot on it, sometimes for hours. It's not just that this is so very dangerous, though obviously it is. My question is: what's he doing wrong?

He got angry tonight and said he "just forgot" to turn off the gas. But to me this isn't about forgetting, it's about how you pick up the pot: I would invariably, without having to think about it, turn off the hob before removing the pot. Or at the least, switch off the hob with one hand as I lift the pot with the other hand. In other words, he's doing the entire action wrong.

YANBU: no one lifts the pot till the hob is off. YABU: he just needs to remember to turn off the hob after lifting the pot

And no-one opens the car doors until I've switched the engine off either!

Jollyjoy · 20/10/2024 18:07

I generally do it your way but not unheard of to take pot off then do gas. Anyhoo I don’t think ‘no one thinks like you’ shaming is the answer- he needs to make his own plan for how he’s going to stop this happening in future, I’d want to hear what that is.

Talipesmum · 20/10/2024 18:07

I don’t always turn it off as I lift the pot. I often do, but not always. I do remember to turn it off though!

Neveranynamesleft · 20/10/2024 18:07

I usually turn the gas off before lifting pans away as things carry on cooking for a while as I'm getting the rest of the meal together and also it saves a bit of gas !

He is very wasteful and it could also be dangerous.

DH can lift the pot without turning off the gas. But generally only when he thinks I've already turned it off (such as when I call him in to mash the potatoes). How he doesn't notice the flame stil lit, I have no idea ...

PollyG23 · 20/10/2024 18:12

Count yourself lucky- one of my friends had a flatmate who would remove the pan, lower the gas to minimum then blow out the flame without turning the gas fully off 🙈 the mind boggles! 😵‍💫 the waste of gas (if on for hours) would annoy me but agnostic about turning gas off before or after removing the pan

I always do. In theory... we had refugees staying and a few months ago, the older lady pointed at the hob, at which point, I realised that I'd left the damn thing burning for about a bloody hour!

As a rule, I switch the gas off, then take the pan off. I don't want my sleeves catching fire.

Anyhoo I don’t think ‘no one thinks like you’ shaming is the answer

I don't see that she's doing that, but I certainly understand her frustration, as he does it regularly and has left it on for hours. It IS a potential danger, after all, not to mention an expensive waste of gas.

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 20/10/2024 18:43

I sometimes leave the gas on for a moment if I'm needing to replace that pot shortly, or put a new one on the hob. The reason is that our hob is sometimes hard to relight when it's hot. Occasionally I forget and leave it on. I'm an experienced cook and not mad!

BMW6 · 20/10/2024 18:49

My DH is a bugger for doing this. Turns gas burner right down and forgets to turn it off.

Same with oven. Doesn't turn off before removing food then forgets.

Mens brains are shite.

Thank you all! DH is not diagnosed but I don't think there's any doubt he has a touch of ADD. He leaves the water running in the sink as he leaves the loo at least once a week! meanwhile I definitely have a touch of OCD. God help anyone who puts the plates in the dishwasher the wrong way.

Jollyjoy thanks for a good steer on how to try to address this more constructively. I mean at least he's cooking, right?
