To say no to covid vaccine for DS?

Clarabell77 · 20/10/2024 08:55

My DS10 has asthma - mild albeit a chest infection 14 months ago ended up in an overnight in hospital on a nebuliser/steroid and he’s had to have a steroid once during that time for another infection.

He’s been identified as being at risk and offered a Covid vaccine. I’m not sure whether to allow him to have it as I’m sure he’s had Covid quite a few times when we’ve all tested positive at home - can’t test him as he won’t let me near him with a swab. He’s had mild symptoms, even when ours weren’t.

He’s had the flu vaccine twice and taken unwell within weeks on both occasions so I’ve opted out of that one this year. Does anyone have any thoughts on the Covid one? Ideally someone who has actual knowledge, not from YouTube, I’m not a covid denier or anti vaxxer.

AIBU to not get him the vaccine?

Ds (17yo) is cv so gets offered the jab. I was going to not worry about it this time because he's always ill after any injection for about 3 days of high temperatures.

However it seems rife round here currently, and the general consensus is that it's a nasty variant taking a good couple of weeks to recover for people who aren't cv and I've known some hospitalisations on non-cv people which I haven't for since the early days of covid.

So he's booked in.

He should have had it Friday, but it was cancelled. Not sure why.

Edited to add:
He's also never had covid (and yes, we do test) despite all his friends having had it a couple of times, and various family members (we don't get the jabs now) having it around him. So it does look like it does protect him.

Misinformed or they know something you don't - always wroth keeping and open mind

But if your child has asthma a flu jab may be life saving, and can certainly avoid a lot of pain and distress

If they know something I don't, I would be very happy to have a look at the peer reviewed publications supporting their stance. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be able to point me towards that.

I do recall one poster on a different thread pointing me towards an article in a predatory journal (I.e. One that will publish anything provided you pay them). I did have a look at the paper and the study design was somewhat less than robust.

I am neither pro nor anti vaccine. I believe you are taking a risk when you get a vaccine. However, the decision you need to make is whether you would be taking a bigger risk by not getting it.

I have never gotten the flu vaccine until this year. The reason being was I was low risk of contracting flu and low risk of serious complications from flu. I have since acquired a severe case of an auto immune disease as a result of covid so this year I got the flu vaccine as I believe the risks associated with not getting the vaccine are now higher than the risks associated with not getting it.

I am asthmatic on paper and had covid also, do not do flu nor covid vaccines and am very healthy; just take the ventolin seasonally

MightSoundCrassButItsFactual · 20/10/2024 17:01

I am a person who comes from a country where they do only baby or exotic travel vaccines. My brother lives there and his whole family had covid, neither he nor his friends nor relatives nor neighbours took the vaccine or do flu vaccines. Some other people do. Just not the ones I know

I appreciate that. I’m speaking about covid though - it was a very different beast across the board of how everything was handled. That’s the point I’m making- I think it’s pretty obvious that it was different and that’s what I’m saying. I’m actually exhausted today and I don’t have it in me to keep making the same point only to be misunderstood deliberately.

I am not deliberately misunderstanding you.

You are claiming that the side effects of the covid vaccine were downplayed and minimised. Yes they were. However, the side effects of the MMR vaccine are also down played and minimised. How is the covid vaccine any different in the regard?

I’m not saying they were different I’m saying the scale -the entire country, the level of division created, the gaslighting, the shaming etc was on a scale like we had never seen. I know the point I’m making, I e made it a few times throughout this thread. I’m not blaming you obviously but I’m actually so tired today I could burst into tears right now and I literally don’t care anymore who gets what or doesn’t and who thinks what anymore, I wish I hadn’t even commented now. I really do.

Sayithowiseeit · 20/10/2024 17:16

Not being unreasonable. I haven't got my kids done and after my first one I haven't had anymore.

Yes, the scale was different certainly. But that was because we were dealing with levels of infection and impact of infection on a scale outside living memory.

I'm sorry you're feeling unwell. I hope you feel better soon.

Galatine · 20/10/2024 17:23

I had a work colleague whose mother didn't believe I vaccines. She walked with a very pronounced limp, because of Polio. I wonder how she and her mother viewed the 'Golden Age' when you didn't have to make any decisions. People just got polio. died of diphtheria, measles, whooping cough, smallpox and a host of other preventable illnesses.
Great days? I think not.

SittingHereInLimbo · 20/10/2024 17:23

Even "mild" covid cases can lead to long covid, especially if you've had it more than once.

And covid has been implicated in causing or boosting all sort of other illnesses. There are numerous studies accessible online with data on this.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. I’m going through a horrible breakup and other crap and I just want to cry just now to be honest and I genuinely appreciate that, thanks for being kind there. I just want to go under a duvet and cry my eyes out lol thanks again and I agree with what you said in that post. X

If he has taken unwell within weeks of having the vaccine is not the vaccine that made him ill.
Personally I would let him have all the recommended vaccines. If he has asthma both flu and Covid could be dangerous

I can see how people think it's related
Last night I started with what I think is flu, and this morning I was meant to be going for my flu and Covid vaccine
If the illness had started just 24hrs later it would have been straight after my vaccines
But it's definitely not related as it started before and I've cancelled them

I'm sorry to hear that. AIBU is not a great spot if you're feeling down. Maybe a bit of self care, even if just a coffee and a bit of cake and watching some crap TV, would help take a bit of the edge off it? I hope you don't think I'm trying to minimise what you're going through by suggesting that 💐

That's how dangerous they are. Just booking them gives you side effects, you've proved it. Given there have been more than 11.8 billion doses administered there must be thousands of cases just like yours.

buffyfaithspike · 20/10/2024 17:47

@MonkeyToHeaven exactly! (I've had 8 vaccines and no issues)

Oh no not at at! God that’s so kind and you’re absolutely right it’s not the best place to be - I’m going to do exactly what you suggested. Thank you, I really mean that, for being so nice, ffs… it’s made me cry and I really have being having the most horrible time and I don’t even know you and you’ve just been so lovely and so kind and I’m actually not joking… I don’t think I’ll ever forget you for being so kind. I’ve had the most horrible weekend, not spoken to a soul and I’m going to do exactly what you’ve suggested. Please know how much that meant to me, thank you so very much. Jeez… Mumsnet eh. Has the best of people at the most surprising times. Thank you 💖 crap TV going on now. Thank you.

You can get myocarditis from COVID too

Yep

Anti vaxer friend who got covid nearly died with this,/of this/whatever

Although I would never wish I'll-health on anyone the irony was stark

Of course it was the vaccine.

Don't you just long for the days before vaccines were invented? I mean, no dilemma to be had. What a shame clever people started inventing things to save lives/minimise the effects of a disease

This. Vaccines work, why wouldn't you get one for an asthmatic child.

loulouljh · 20/10/2024 18:48

I suspect all the people who are being accused of being anti-vax took ALL vaccines up until the covid vaccination. I know I did. In fact I don't know any people who didn't. I am certainly no anti-vaxxer. BUT I am now looking at all vaccines differently and I suspect many people are.

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

What are you basing that on? Have you any medical evidence to support that?
