Is 1am too early for milk delivery?

We've recently started getting milk delivered. The website says they deliver before 7am, which is great as we leave for work just after 7, meaning we can stick it in the fridge before we go.

But, milkman is delivering at 1am. Is this normal? It feels too early to me as the milk is then sitting out for several hours.

Milkmen always did early deliveries. Nothing will go ”off” before the morning.

Ours comes before 12. If I hear him I will get it in. DD often got it in in the summer as her room is downstairs so she'd see the headlights.

/Our milk is delivered about 1am too. We have a large picnic cool box for year round use, in the summer just pop a few ice cube stone things to keep the inside of the box cool for as log as possible. It's good enough even in to 30C plus weather if you aren't leaving out until 1pm (which I have done occasionally) even then it's OK but could easily turn

1.00am? Who the F delivers anything at 1.00am? Let alone milk?! Batshit. I'd stop it to be honest. When it's muggy and humid through the night in the Spring and Summer, it's going to be like cheese by the time you get to it - 6-7 hours later! EWWWWWWW! 😖

Mine comes around 1am,I have an insulated box bought from the milkman.

Where are all these posters living where the milk is delivered at midnight to 1.00am? Confused Never known this anywhere, ever.

I actually cancelled a milk delivery because it was delivered too early. I think he was starting the business around another job.
The earliest it came was 10pm. Problem was it was pre-children so the milk sat out in full sun for hours sometimes before we got up and we did get milk going off.
It was also stolen a few times by people going home from the pub.

The final straw was basically they wanted a months notice to cancel a delivery, but it was before kids so we would go away a lot. It was never going to work for us, I remember the wife shouting at me down the phone, I think a lot of people were cancelling.

My Dad was a milkman for almost 30 years - as he always said "someone has got to be first & someone has got to be last"
At the height of popularity of milk deliveries he was starting to deliver to customers at 10pm to be finished by 6am.
He'd always have someone complain no matter what time he delivered.

Delivered from Milk and More.

Not sure why you think milk goes off that quickly unless you heat it and leave it to stand in the warm first. I used to be in dairy, milk is quite good at staying fresh in normal UK temperatures despite being left out for hours.

I speak as someone who has enough exposure to it to know if the milk will last a couple of days or just that morning more by a mere whiff of the stuff.

SabreIsMyFave · 19/10/2024 16:43

Oh, I have never heard of Milk and More. Thank you @MarkingBad

The milkman who delivers in our village comes between half six and eight in the morning.

Why is 'Milk and More' delivering at 1am? Confused

I genuinely thought it would go funky if it was left for 6-8 hours. If it stuffy/humid/warm. Some summer nights it can be 18-22C in the summer. (Occasionally higher, like 26C, and very humid too.)

I'm in Somerset - we used to use Milk & More but switched to a local farm called The Milk Shed - started as a milk vending service, then expanded to local deliveries, now has expanded to deliveries much further afield. They do milkshakes & cream too.

Ahh did they do unpasteurised milk too?

CrushingOnRubies · 19/10/2024 17:00

Our milk arrives between 11:30 &1:30...
If we are still up then we put in fridge.

This time of year it's cold at night and it's fine till the morning. During the summer we leave out a cool bag with ice block in and they put the milk in that and it's fine till the morning.

APurpleSquirrel · 19/10/2024 17:10

@purplebeansprouts it's 'gently pasteurised' 😄 & non-homogenised so you get a thick layer of cream at the top - which the kids hate! Weirdos!!
