Is 1am too early for milk delivery?

We've recently started getting milk delivered. The website says they deliver before 7am, which is great as we leave for work just after 7, meaning we can stick it in the fridge before we go.

But, milkman is delivering at 1am. Is this normal? It feels too early to me as the milk is then sitting out for several hours.

I ended up cancelling the milk because they would deliver at 1 or 2 am and the lights would go into my neighbour’s property (and my dog would bark furiously).

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 19/10/2024 10:32

My milkman arrives around 2. We have a milk keeper, with two bricks on top. Not because of the weather but to keep the crows and foxes out!

This is going to sound like a total lie, but I just remembered I used to do (help with) a milkround on a Saturday as a teenager. I used to get picked up around 4.30, so I guess I was basing my expectation off that.

I think we did deliver up until around 9am though, so the commitment to before 7am will be the issue.

Any insulated box recommendations? Do I just go with the one they sell?

This is how it was in the old days too

We never ever had milk that early

Sherlockreeves · 19/10/2024 10:34

Maybe get milk from shop if it concerns you. I'd say no it's fine. Sat on the step a few hours. I've had stuff in my car longer. And gone home lol 😆

Winter months it'll be chilled for you
Summer months your the one who wanted a milk man lol 😆 he has to work his hours he needs to work. His schedule is his own. Xx

Nanny0gg · 19/10/2024 10:35

I'd be interested to know what time they finish their rounds

Bestinshow22 · 19/10/2024 10:36

We had milk delivered for decades, until about five years ago when our milkman arrived too early and was too noisy.

I used the insulated cool box the milkman sold, it used to be called a 'milk minder' and it did keep the milk cold. Ours didn't arrive at 1am though!

What’s the benefit of getting milk delivered?

I used to start about 3.30am and be finished for 9 ish but that's almost 30 years ago.

My milkman comes around 2.15am there's another on the street that delivers anytime from 9.30pm to 1am.

Cool box with ice packs should be sufficient in summer and preferably in the shade.

DoIWantTo · 19/10/2024 10:42

Our milk is delivered at 3am. Always still freezing cold when I take it in at 8am. If you don’t like the time the milk is delivered at then feel free to cancel the deliveries.

SpunkyKoala · 19/10/2024 10:42

Maybe milk delivery isn’t for you

smooththecat · 19/10/2024 10:43

When I was a kid it used to come v. early in the morning and the milk float was electric, so really quiet.

jessycake · 19/10/2024 10:43

Mines there before midnight , I found this out accidently , it's making me question getting it to be honest as I threw a few bottles away in the summer as they were on the turn and now I know why .

ClareCottage · 19/10/2024 10:45

Ours delivers between 11pm and 1am. We bought a cooler box which we leave outside the night before and he pops them in there so they don’t get knocked over by foxes and if it’s a warm night we fill it with reusable ice blocks from the freezer.

What’s the benefit of getting milk delivered?

Glass bottles not plastic

That makes no sense. You're having milk delivered from the day before!

SingingSands · 19/10/2024 10:48

We were walking to our local pub at about 6:30pm last Sunday and saw a milk delivery van on rounds! It was either late or early, we couldn't decide which 😆

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/10/2024 10:58

Ours usually comes at around 2 am AFAIK - I don’t sleep well so am sometimes aware. It’s fine, even in summer - we bring it in first thing so it’s never sitting in the sun for hours.

Printedword · 19/10/2024 10:58

ChampagneLassie · 19/10/2024 10:36

What’s the benefit of getting milk delivered?

We don’t drive, so it’s handy. I like supporting local businesses. The Christmas stuff is great

WildAndFree123 · 19/10/2024 11:02

I’m thinking about cancelling mine for this reason too. Over the summer mine came around 11.30pm but as I was up later this wasn’t an issue. But it’s presumably still coming at the same time and now sitting out till 7am which isn’t ideal. I really don’t want to have to set a midnight alarm for milk.

Ted27 · 19/10/2024 11:06

@ChampagneLassie

Glass bottles, my recycling bin was always full of milk cartons
I hardly ever run out or need to buy extra
As long as I put a request on by 8pm I can change the quantity I need.
He delivers other stuff - basics like bread, yoghurt, cheese, butter, spuds.
I started during lockdown in case I was ill so my son would have fresh basic supplies.
Local jobs, better deal for local farmers

PandoraSox · 19/10/2024 11:06

ChampagneLassie · 19/10/2024 10:36

What’s the benefit of getting milk delivered?

Glass bottles. Plus the dairies aren't getting ripped off by the supermarkets.

Flossflower · 19/10/2024 11:14

If your milkman delivers at that time, you may be being selfish. Some people on our road have it delivered in the early hours and the milk float, with its rattling bottles, wakes loads of the neighbours up.

doodleschnoodle · 19/10/2024 11:14

Ours comes at around 1am and has for the past five years or so. Never had any issues.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 19/10/2024 11:17

Nanny0gg · 19/10/2024 10:47

2am is probably at the start of the round but it works for me.

Milk tastes different in glass bottles. I only use a small amount so it's actually cheaper than the supermarket. I'm supporting the local farmer and it's less plastic bottle to recycle.

doodleschnoodle · 19/10/2024 11:17

Ours is very quiet, the only reason I know what time he comes is that I work until 1am sometimes and see the van stop outside the house as I'm logging off. It doesn't even set our dog off.

And we get it delivered because it's from a local farm and I like to support smaller, local places. And they deliver other stuff too. Over summer they deliver strawberries grown nearby and they are so good! And I like the glass bottles.
