Is 1am too early for milk delivery?

MidnightMilkman · 19/10/2024 09:46

We've recently started getting milk delivered. The website says they deliver before 7am, which is great as we leave for work just after 7, meaning we can stick it in the fridge before we go.

But, milkman is delivering at 1am. Is this normal? It feels too early to me as the milk is then sitting out for several hours.

Ours gets delivered around 1am and I wondered about it sitting out but am too lazy to get it in then. Never had any problems with it going off but then we have deliveries 3 times a week so it gets used within a couple of days. If I was buying from the supermarket I'd get much bigger bottles and it would need to last longer.

mummaloo2 · 19/10/2024 11:24

Mine gets delivered at around midnight and not had any issues, been getting it a year now.

ChristmasFluff · 19/10/2024 11:43

I can't get a delivery where I live, but in the old house the milkman would deliver between 2am and 7am. I always intended to get a cool box for summer, but never bothered ((in 16 years!) because I never had a problem.

When you are having deliveries, the milk only has to last a couple of days, so it's not like when you are getting large amounts with your weekly shop to last the week.

Anisty · 19/10/2024 11:58

Yes. Very normal. Ours comes around that time which suits me as i am often still up then.

But we have an insulated box (from milkman) that keeps the milk fine there all night if necessary.

Nelliemellie · 19/10/2024 12:03

Ours come very early morning, don’t know what time, but we leave a box out and in the winter it’s no problem as it stays cold. Only started it after lockdown and have kept it, it’s a really good service in my opinion.

What’s the benefit of getting milk delivered?

It's much fresher and keeps much longer than supermarket milk (only Cravendale compares for longevity)

Supports the local dairies and provides employment for local people.

Pay a proper price so the farmers aren't ripped off by greedy supermarkets.

And obvs the convenience of having fresh milk on the doorstep.

meganorks · 19/10/2024 12:08

One of the reasons I stopped getting milk delivered. Ours was often coming at midnight! If I was up, I could put it away straight away, but otherwise was sat out all night. Fine in winter. But in summer it was mostly ending up down the sink

When I was a kid it used to come v. early in the morning and the milk float was electric, so really quiet.

Yes the engine is quiet but the bottles still rattle.

ladyditaverner · 19/10/2024 12:37

They come to our street about 2am ish

Ozanj · 19/10/2024 12:39

The closer you live to the dairy the earlier it tends to be. Just tell them if it’s too early

JackGrealishsCalves · 19/10/2024 12:58

When we had milk delivered it used to be about 5am, we moved and got a different milkman (same dairy) who, after a while, started delivering about 10pm, never told us this, I just spotted him driving away one evening !

redastherose · 19/10/2024 14:09

Mine gets delivered around 10-11pm at night. I often get it in before bed but I've not had any issues with it going off even during the summer when I haven't managed to get it the night before.

Oldraver · 19/10/2024 15:29

Ours comes in the early hours and we have a milk minder in the shade

OH is up at 4am 50% of the time 6am the other so it's not out for long

Tarkan · 19/10/2024 15:42

We used to get ours delivered but it was the same plastic jugs you get from the shop but at almost twice the price and they delivered between midnight and 1am so if we weren't up to take it in straight away we'd have people heading home from the local pub stealing it before we even got it and we would have to go to the shop anyway. They had a noisy van too so if DH was on an early shift he would get woken up by it idling outside. It was a localish dairy so we did like supporting them but it was too much hassle in the end and they were having to refund us a lot.

After we moved to a quieter street we tried to set up a delivery again but they didn't reply to a single email (they wouldn't have known it was us as we had set up in person before and it was me contacting them instead of DH) so decided it wasn't worth chasing them up anymore.

PickAChew · 19/10/2024 15:46

You could put an ice pack in the cool box in hotter weather.

Addictedtococacola · 19/10/2024 15:49

We stopped our milk delivery because it kept going missing. No idea what time the man was delivering but by 6am the milk was not there.

Stretchedresources · 19/10/2024 15:53

It's fine. I've been having deliveries for a decade and only in a heatwave can the milk go off. I can see what time the milkman arrives through my ring doorbell.
I don't have a coolbox.

LorettyTen · 19/10/2024 15:53

Probably the same company we use. They come between 12.30-1 am. It suits us as DH is retired and waits up but if it was outside all night especially in summer I think I'd find an alternative.
I suspect the problem is that they have to cover a big area so they need to start very early to get done by 7am.

MereDintofPandiculation · 19/10/2024 16:00

Ours delivers at 9pm the night before. It means we can put it in the fridge before we go to bed

BabyCloud · 19/10/2024 16:04

Get a cool box for them to leave it in.

Twistybranch · 19/10/2024 16:06

We get milk delivered at that time. But we are up at 7 and it sits inside our porch so would never be in sunlight if in summer.

Only complaint is that it isn’t an electric vehicle, just an ordinary transit. So does make some noise but the delivery person is always quiet when coming up the drive, using the porch doors.

Can’t have it all!

What’s the benefit of getting milk delivered?

You don't have to remember to buy it but yeah it's a bit annoying as you do have to think when you'll need milk and work out your consumption rate. I've gone off milk since I thought about the male calfs but if I find one that does oat milk delivery I'm tempted

purplebeansprouts · 19/10/2024 16:13

Flossflower · 19/10/2024 11:14

If your milkman delivers at that time, you may be being selfish. Some people on our road have it delivered in the early hours and the milk float, with its rattling bottles, wakes loads of the neighbours up.

We have someone at the far end of the road who gets it and it's very annoying as our road is so tricky to drive down when there's cars parked both sides of the road.

APurpleSquirrel · 19/10/2024 16:19

That's normal. We've been getting milk delivered since before Covid, though we've since changed to a local dairy farm.
Glass bottles so no plastic, really nice milk & always have it in. If we need more we can go to the farm & use the vending machine.
I think ours comes around 2am but does vary. Very quiet - usually the only noise is the odd clink of a bottle.

Pippatpip · 19/10/2024 16:19

Our next door neighbour used to get a delivery at around three am. Woke me up. He wasn't quiet.
