Help! My husband's feelings are being hurt but am I being mean?

He is a very clean, tidy man with good hygiene.

But WHENEVER he drinks beer I can smell it on him and it makes me heave. It must be beer because he drinks Jack Daniel's and I can never smell it when he does.

I told him last night 'sorry, but you stink'. I really didn't mean to be hurtful but it overwhelmed me, this awful smell. It's there when I walk in a room.

The smell is absolutely awful. I can't really describe it. It is such a weird smell. It's like this weird, yeasty yet sour type smell. It's really hard to explain

The closest thing I can describe it to is sadly a rotting flesh. I remember this experience from years ago after someone had passed away. It's a weird, sickly sweet smell.

It's literally oozing out of him and even brushing his teeth hasn't helped when I demanded he did that last night Blush

If I walk into the room I can smell it on him immediately.

Is something wrong with me here? I ask this because my own dad was an alcoholic (nice man but drink reliance). He never smelt and still doesn't? But it was just whisky. Is that why?

I also worked with an alcoholic briefly in an office. He did smell of alcohol a lot but it was a different smell?

I have also smelt alcohol when briefly training as a nurse and I remember some patients being really drunk but I never smelt this smell.

Can someone tell me if I'm going mad or explain what this is?

And why have I never smelt it before? I am not pregnant so no heightened sense of smell

When I smelled this on my DH he was diabetic. Sweet rotting smell.

ichifanny · 19/10/2024 09:08

My husband gets that if he’s drank beer it’s like beer sweat or something , even only a few beers it’s like he becomes malodorous of it . Think it’s just a beer thing as doesn’t get it with any other alcohol . I’ve smelled the same thing from patients at work too .

WillowTit · 19/10/2024 09:11

get him some organic beer

First thing that came into my head - would explain been having impact but not other alcohol

It isn't the smell of beer. The OP already explained it.

OP I get it - my OH has the same. I believe it is diabetes related so you need him to get checked out. It is an overwhelming stink of sweet yeast. It gets in his clothes and after he goes for a run he absoluely stinks of it.

Excuse me?

The ops first post says "But WHENEVER he drinks beer I can smell it on him and it makes me heave. It must be beer because he drinks Jack Daniel's and I can never smell it when he does."

My ex drank whisky, he could drink it at home with no problems but I knew every time he'd been to the pub as the minute he walked through the door. I would have swore I wasn't pregnant too I was 4 days pregnant with my first, I was 10 days when I walked past a pub and knew straight away I was pregnant with my second.

healthybychristmas · 19/10/2024 09:15

Does he smoke at the same time? I found when I picked up my daughter and she'd been smoking and drinking beer I couldn't bear to be in the car with her we had to drive home with all the windows open! if she had been smoking and drinking something other than beer then it didn't affect me in the same way even though I hate the smell of smoke.

It being the smell. She knows what beer smells like.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 19/10/2024 09:19

This has happened to DH in the past. He admittedly drinks much more than he should generally, but it only affected the way he smelt at one particular time a couple of years ago, when he started to smell of vinegar. It was disgusting - I could smell it on him continually and had to keep changing the bed.

Although my sense of smell was more acute at the time due to menopause, I’m pretty sure it was to do with his hormonal state, not mine - probably a result of stress. Is there anything going on with your DH that may have affected his hormones/metabolism?

WillowTit · 19/10/2024 09:20

is it cheap beer?

Benshen · 19/10/2024 09:25

I know exactly the smell you mean, OP! It's cloying and sweetish and a bit sort of poisonous. And it's very thick, so not the kind of smell you can ignore really. I've never compared it to the smell of death before, but you're so right, it is like that. I don't drink and I find it repulsive, and I'm generally chilled out about stuff.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 19/10/2024 09:27

No, you didn't 'have to' say 'you stink'. Some foods and drinks have a strong smell, and you may he sensitive to some more than others. It's unreasonable to berate someone for smelling of something they have drunk or eaten, unless they are neglecting their hygiene as well.

It isn't the smell of beer. The OP already explained it.

Yes, she called it 'the beer smell' and said it doesn't happen when he drinks other things, so how is it not the beer? Confused Also, beer contains yeast and sugars. That's why it smells sweet and yeasty!

A few people now have mentioned diabetes - Can I ask what would be involved in finding this out?

I know he will be very reluctant to see a GP based off of him saying he smells, without any other symptomsalthough he has been complaining of tiredness a lot lately

Would a simple urine test we can do at home show anything? Then that would prompt him to seek a GP out to get tested properly

NinaPersson · 19/10/2024 09:33

No you’re not being mean, you can’t help your bodies natural response to this vile smell.

He does sound like he drinks too much,

NewbieT · 19/10/2024 09:34

Maybe you've had Covid recently?

likeitallagain · 19/10/2024 09:34

Oh and he also has a cut on his lip that has been there for 6 months! Admittedly, I've seen him pick it

But surely it would've healed by now? I think that's another reason he should get tested

Yeah the sugar would show up in his urine with a simple dip test. You can get these from Amazon.

another symptom would be needing the urinate a lot

HollyGolightly4 · 19/10/2024 09:36

@likeitallagain funnily enough, my husband went out last night and the bedroom smells this morning - he'd been drinking red stripe! I think there is something in that particular drink that does smell really unpleasant. Dh is sleeping it off right now, but I plan on telling him that it's grim- and I want fresh bedding on tonight which he can duly be in charge of!

OK yes dear whatever you say 😏

magicstar1 · 19/10/2024 09:42

I had the same type of thing with DH. I’d get a strange sweet smell from him that I hated. He was diagnosed with diabetes and I can always tell when he drinks or eats the wrong thing as I can smell it. I’d get your DH tested.

Bumcake · 19/10/2024 09:42

OP, you’ve been asked about five times now - could you be pregnant?

You all need to read the OP before asking the question that was already answered in the original post.
