Hotel Biscuits

AIBU to think that the availability and standard of hotel room biscuits has declined significantly?

There was once a time when you could at the very least rely on a solid, standard biscuit, like a bourbon or a custard cream. Now you’re lucky if you get any at all.

More expensive places used to give you a home baked cookie in a fancy bag tied with a bow. Now you get bought in standard conference room biscuits at best.

Big up to the Premier Inn though - their premium rooms had Green & Blacks chocolate last time I stayed.

Maybe I need to get over this shit.

AIBU?

First world problems 🙄

Stupid comment. It’s a chat forum, people can post about what they like.

Donsyb · 21/10/2024 09:37

I’ve not stayed in a nice hotel and not had biscuits. Always had at least borders or walkers shortbread. In more luxury hotels, nicer biscuits or home made. Some have pantries where you can go and help yourself rather than in the room itself.

only time recently I got. Nothing was in a hub by premier inn - most basic of basic 😂

AnnieMay55 · 21/10/2024 12:20

What also annoys me in hotels is the selection of teas and coffees. There are never enough normal breakfast teas. We often want a tea when we arrive, maybe another later in the evening and one when we wake up before breakfast. We don't need a whole selection of fruit teas and coffees but sometimes there are only 2 normal tea bags for 2 people. I am sure a lot of people want to drink several of the same drink. The other moan is they are not replaced if you don't have your room serviced, which seems to be done less now since COVID.

soupfiend · 21/10/2024 12:28

Oh this!

I mean who the hell drinks fruit and herbal teas by the bucket load anyway. I have tea on a drip virtually. Normal, straightforward tea. None of your nonsense.

ThePoshUns · 21/10/2024 12:30

See I do like a peppermint tea of an evening.

Singleandproud · 21/10/2024 12:31

The Travelodge I stay in for work gives you a 2 finger KitKat - sometimes, it's not always consistent.

Nogaxeh · 21/10/2024 12:32

The Butler Arms in Waterville, Co. Kerry, provide Skelligs chocolate truffles instead of biscuits. A very pleasant surprise.

Morgan’s Hotel in Swansea has Welsh cakes, chocolates and other goodies in the room The toiletries are Molton Brown

We didn't get Welsh cakes there 😢
We did get Molton Brown toiletries though

MaddestGranny · 21/10/2024 13:34

Before my most recent hotel-stay (short package/Spain), I'd fortunately read in advance that the hotel didn't even provide kettles in the rooms. Shock, horror. So, I've added a small travel kettle to my travel kit, along with v small cafetiere, a week's supply of ground coffee and some tea-bags.

Perfect for sitting reading on the balcony looking at the sea - which is my ideal relaxation.
Naturally, there's also a corkscrew in that kit for locally sourced wine.😁

First world problems 🙄

Does every trivial thread really need to have a <lighthearted> disclaimer so that you don't grumpily assume the OP thinks that poor-quality biscuits etc are a source of terrible woe and deep trauma?! Seriously- how could you possibly think a thread about biscuits was anything other than lighthearted?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/10/2024 13:47

The only hotel I've stayed in lately had a couple of chocolates rather than biscuits. I was delighted... until I ate one. Vegan chocolate - bleurgh! Yes, I get why they'd choose to put vegan ones out, but honestly they were horrible.

@Blarn Travelodge are a bit basic. Lady time I stayed in one there were pubes on the shower wall 🤢🤢

I have genuinely never had a bad experience in a Travelodge, stayed in one in London on Saturday, it was fantastic.
no biscuits though

CatamaranViper · 21/10/2024 13:49

The only reason I give blood is for a fab, guilt free biscuit selection at the end.

I remember the Radisson Blu in Glasgow City Centre had Tunnock's Caramel Wafers in the rooms when I stayed there for work about ten years ago. I still think about it now 😊

I'm still salty about the fact that when I went to a Radisson Blu in Essex in 2015 but got caught in traffic on the way and was ravenous by the time of arrival, I was relying on hotel room biscuits to fix me. And there were none provided! Shocked and disappointed. It's quite common these days though, sadly.

benid · 21/10/2024 13:53

We recently stayed in a fab B&B in the lakes which had lovely biscuits and ALSO from 4pm onwards home made cake for you to help yourself too from the breakfast room 😍

rainbowsparkle28 · 21/10/2024 13:55

Try being coeliac then come back to me on this...🙄

I read this and immediately thought it would be about a biscuity version of Hotel Chocolat. They would have beautiful versions of warm biscuits, biscuit mixes, travel biscuits, biscuit selection boxes ...

And there would be a marvellously retro version of a biscuit maker that makes foolproof, cafe-quality biscuits.

Bitterly disappointed.

This is genius! Please start this business Grin

5128gap · 21/10/2024 14:11

I stayed in a hotel last week and there was a couple of biscoff. This is extremely exciting when you're vegan, second only to a bourbon (which as you rightly point out, is a rare occurrence these days.)
Unfortunately on opening the little packet I found that one had been smashed to crumbs and was quite undunkable.
I felt that my (firm but fair) trip adviser review conveyed my disappointment.
They haven't responded.

WildFlowerBees · 21/10/2024 14:26

I think there needs to be a biscuit rating.

All Borders biscuits are low down in the ratings for me same with a walkers shortbread. Too ordinary and mainstream.

Warm cookies yes, cheap bourbons no.

Locally made, perfect!

I run an Airbnb, and have thought about providing biscuits, (those lovely www.islandbakery.scot/ ones) but then was worried about people with allergies to nuts. I sometimes put a [glass] bottle of local mineral water in the fridge, as a lot of guests are American, but some don't drink carbonated water. I now leave still water, if I do at all...

I love love love these biscuits especially the half Lemon ones mmmm

OriginalUsername2 · 21/10/2024 14:45

My DP brought home a packet of Biscoff a few weeks ago. I didn’t think of hotels at the time. I said “For some reason I feel like I’m at the hairdressers when I eat these.”

First world problems 🙄

We all need a little levity in our lives. If all we talked about on this, or any other forum, were super serious issues, it would be bloody depressing.

I'm with you OP, I feel the standard has declined. Although I stayed in a very cute guest house last week and they had Biscoff biscuits AND a Lindt chocolate on the tray, so they will be getting my return business! Maybe independent is the way to go.

The last hotel I stayed at just had a communal tea and coffee station at reception. Which was a pain if you wanted a cup of tea in bed in the morning, as you had to get dressed first and go downstairs first.

Oh I would hate that! One of the few perks for me about staying away in a hotel is being able to make a coffee 2 feet from your bed and getting back in bed to drink it and watch morning tv!

Used to run a B&B in Scotland and shortbread and Tunnock's teacakes and wafers were staples on the tea tray.

Love it. Can't beat a Tunnocks.

mitogoshigg · 21/10/2024 15:30

They have disappeared completely from most hotels, even at 4 star level. I'm most disappointed. Also decaffeinated tea/fruit tea is rare now
