Hotel Biscuits

AIBU to think that the availability and standard of hotel room biscuits has declined significantly?

There was once a time when you could at the very least rely on a solid, standard biscuit, like a bourbon or a custard cream. Now you’re lucky if you get any at all.

More expensive places used to give you a home baked cookie in a fancy bag tied with a bow. Now you get bought in standard conference room biscuits at best.

Big up to the Premier Inn though - their premium rooms had Green & Blacks chocolate last time I stayed.

Maybe I need to get over this shit.

Ohhhhh... I very much rate a hotel by its biscuits.

Yes, Doubletree certainly used to give you a big cookie at check in, they were lovely.

I normally stay at Travelodge where you're lucky if theres a tea and a coffee.

Very fancy hip hotel in Brussels had fizzy water, still water, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, posh chocolates, biscuits and a range of branded chocolate bars (nope not highly expensive mini bar stuff, all free gifties, we checked, I am paranoid!)... and the accessible bathroom had a height adjustable sink and roll in shower space (and you could ask for a shower stool to be provided instead if you wanted).

They had a van, in the dining room, that served waffles at breakfast. Like an icecream van, only waffles. Mind, blown.

Vitally important thread. Tea and quality biscuits in hotel rooms must be protected!

I am a regular Premier Inn user but haven't booked the Plus rooms to date. This information may change that!

I'm tempted by Doubletree who put warm cookies in the room, I've read.

They give you them at check-in.

TheKneesOfTheBees · 19/10/2024 05:42

StayCity (in Manchester at least) gives you little squares of tiffin or rocky road, and coffee pods. Then I stayed in an Ibis budget because I was booking last minute and there wasn't even tea and coffee making facilities. And the shower cubicle was next to the bed.

overdog · 19/10/2024 06:15

There's little that delights me more than getting to a hotel room and finding some nice biscuits on the tea tray. Sadly I've not had any biscuits at any of my stays for a long time, I assume everywhere is cutting costs.

Impressed that Premier inn have been issuing G&B - last time I had a premier room it was a two finger kit Kat!

I run an Airbnb, and have thought about providing biscuits, (those lovely www.islandbakery.scot/ ones) but then was worried about people with allergies to nuts. I sometimes put a [glass] bottle of local mineral water in the fridge, as a lot of guests are American, but some don't drink carbonated water. I now leave still water, if I do at all...

Lots of air bnbs provide biscuits (and I'm always really disappointed when they don't!)

If the biscuits are packaged it's not up to you to worry about nut allergies, people will check the ingredients.

The Doubletree chocolate chip cookies are amazing. Warm, gooey, delicious. They give them at check in. I've only stayed at Doubletrees for work and usually check in after a lonnngggg meeting where I've had to 'people' for way longer than my introverted self wants to.

I then practically run to my room, dump my stuff, make a tea or coffee and collapse onto the bed with some TV channel on playing repeats of Four in a Bed or similar. Absolute heaven. It wouldn't be the same with shit biscuits!

Hoglet70 · 19/10/2024 06:30

I got cans of wine and an Easter card in the Premier Inn once. That did make up for the shit biscuits!

I'm more bothered by the fact that since Covid, getting your room serviced anywhere seems to require a massive amount of begging and how they expect anyone to last through their stay on 4 teeny pots of milk is beyond me! Is it just me who needs at least 2 of these in my cup of tea?

Other threads are that way ↕️

Premier inn have always been good for budget extras. We stayed in a premier Inn one Christmas eve. When we got to the room, we found the children had a selection box on their pillows. 🥰

This is a first world website. Were you expecting posts from people struggling with third world problems?

BCBird · 19/10/2024 06:42

Years ago we paid a lot of money to stay in North Wales over New year. We had a box of tesco mince pies as our welcome pack- we were distraught 🙄

BCBird · 19/10/2024 06:42

Love a Premier Inn, mainly for the beds

I’m staying in a Doubletree next week and they’d better have a warm gooey gluten free cookie for me, otherwise I will be very jealous.

TerfTalking · 19/10/2024 07:02

DH stays in the Holiday Inn most weeks. KitKat Chunky and Pipers crisps. Full sugar and Diet Coke.

mdinbc · 19/10/2024 07:11

Canadian here; I have never once seen cookies in a hotel. It must be a UK thing. Haven't seen it in France, Spain, or Mexico either!

Can he advise on biscuits?

Bjorkdidit · 19/10/2024 08:40

Thank you OP for raising such an important issue. And no, I'm not being sarcastic Smile

Like a PP says, the quality of the biscuits can really enhance a guest's stay, without adding significant cost to the room - it must be pennies difference between crap generic biscuits and something a bit special.

Even a couple of nice shortbread fingers are a step up from something basic like custard creams or digestives. Although Ideally I'd like to see Border biscuits as a minimum. Something like Island Bakery biscuits would send me over the moon.

And please, plenty of tea bags including herbal. I'd also like a small fridge that I can use for fresh milk, even if I have to supply my own. I'd much rather have that than the crap hairdryer, trouser press and fancy TV, none of which I ever use.

BraveFacesEveryone · 19/10/2024 08:44

Can confirm the doubletree ones are issued at check in and are warm and delicious. We checked in last night and the biscuits didn’t last more than 5 seconds.

eta: we also have shortbread in packets in the room

Chelsea26 · 19/10/2024 08:44

I once stayed in a really fancy hotel in Monaco and on the check in desk there was a big bowl of help yourself chocolates.
I said to my boyfriend, “Oooo Godiva Chocolates!”
and the receptionist looked up at me like I was silly and said, “yes of course you can!”

Last time I stayed reception man forgot to offer me my cookie. I hung around awkwardly in front of the reception desk until he realised. Both of us were relieved

If no fridge though, there better be a good milk to tea bag ratio!

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 19/10/2024 08:46

In a world of biscoff bloody biscuits, I would kill for a custard cream (and I hate custard creams!)
They should have M&S spiced shortbread rounds, which I have just discovered.

AtlasPine · 19/10/2024 08:48

Biscuits at hotels are incredibly important! I’d be raging disappointed not to get some and expect the quality to be alongside the quality of the hotel. Custard creams at a posh place wouldn’t work for me but would be perfect at a £40 - night b&b.

Best I ever had was a b&b up north where the owner had just won all the cake and biscuit prizes at the annual village show so the room was full of home made treats. Ruined only by the bed having a shin wrecking frame which stuck out all round the mattress. You can’t have it all.

ClytemnestraWasMisunderstood · 19/10/2024 08:50

Blarn · 19/10/2024 01:04

I had to book it for work. I always travel with my own biscuits though, being biscuitless in a hotel is terrible.

The bed was exceedingly comfortable though, that was a nice surprise!

I take my own coffee!
