I got rid of my car last October. My dad sorted everything out for me as I'm clueless when it comes to things like that and he knows exactly what he's doing.

He sent everything to the DVLA that he should have sent. DP has confirmed it as he was with my dad at the time.

I received a letter saying I owed £80 because I hadn't taxed my car. So I replied saying obviously there had been a mistake and explained everything fully.

I didn't hear anything for ages, and today I got a letter saying that when they receive documents, they send out a confirmation letter in four weeks. I haven't received this. So they've said if I can't produce the letter I still have to pay the £80. Despite not even having the car!! But they'll knock it down to £40 if I pay by 28/04/08.

I just cannot believe that I have to pay money I don't have, a few days before my baby's due date, because someone at their end hasn't done their job. It just seems absurd.

Proof of postage?
Try ringing them up.

This happened to two people that I know too.
Phone DVLA and speak to someone rather than write. This sort of thing is quite common since they introduced the new and IMO more complicated V5 form.

This was on Watchdog (last week I think), of this very same thing happening to two different people, it seems that it does seem to be happening quite a bit. To be honest, can't remember what was said on the programme about it, but perhaps if you looked on the Watchdog website it might give you some info of what to do.

Sorry can't be of more help

I actually had the cops come to my house on saying I had filled up my car with petrol and left without paying. Luckily I had proof of selling my car to a dealer. It was scary though. I hope everything goes okay.
