Friend catfishing neighbour on Insta - tell him?

TwinklyBlueEagle · 18/10/2024 14:26

My friend made a fake account for laughs on Instagram last year using photos of a model from Brazil and she has started using the account to catfish one of our neighbours because she thinks it’s funny. She has made it look very genuine and if I didn’t know it was fake I’d think it was a real account.

I personally think it’s really naughty to deceive someone I know into forming a relationship with a fake woman. I jokily told her she should stop but she didn’t think I meant it. The whole thing doesn’t sit right with me though but if I tell him she’ll think I’m a right backstabber.

@Summertimer But the victim in this case is unlikely to be on Mumsnet, even if we had all taken some sort of mythical compulsory cyber security course!

It's a neighbour who I would assume has been targeted by the OP's cunty mate specifically because they might be naive / vulnerable / lonely / liable to fall for it.

Also the OP you thanked below for the link has reinforced your victim blaming if anything, not absolved it.

Inadvertent absolution 👍🏼

I mean, your original comment was deleted and that is the exact opposite of absolution so... 🤷🏻‍♀️

What a strange thing for her to do. I wouldn’t want friends who are capable of such deception. She needs a new hobby and you need new mates.

Findinganewme · 23/10/2024 12:43

‘Funny, naughty, jokey’? These are definitely not the way I’d describe the tone of what your friend is doing.

what your friend is doing is deceptive, manipulative, cruel and absolutely unethical. Your friend is finding it funny to toy with someone’s emotions. It’s not naughty, it’s nasty.

if your friend does not stop after you tell them, it would warrant a complaint to the police, as your neighbour is being victimised.

GreatGardenstuff · 23/10/2024 15:08

I’d struggle to be friends with someone who did this. I’d tell ‘friend’ in no uncertain terms that she should stop it or I would do it for her. It’s needless and nasty.

Cantbelieveit888 · 23/10/2024 15:58

Reminds me of the Bobby Jandu documentary I saw on Netflix recently!! It’s horrific and honestly can play havoc to people lives…

QuestionableMouse · 23/10/2024 16:37

I honestly think the OP is the friend.

What an awful thing for someone to do 🙄
