To think the haste that some posters show to create a thread regarding the death of a celebrity is distasteful?

Some are in such a rush to be The One that announces the passing they can't even form a full sentence as the title.

It's a poor show.

OP posts:

Many posters shaking their heads in disgust at the media reporting the news so quickly with no thought to the family! But it was ok for them to post where to find further info and pictures (All dressed up as warning people obviously 🙄)

InformerYaNoSayDaddyMeSnowMeIGoBlameALickyBoom · 17/10/2024 18:30

There's a certain type of person who gets a thrill out of being grief adjacent, for want of a better word, they love the attention, and thrill of feeling near to grief without actually having to do any of the mourning.

They tend to be like it irl too "ooooh guess who died, I had a conversations with them once", they somehow have to turn the death of a celebrity or acquaintance into being about them.

Abitofalark · 17/10/2024 16:39

I haven't seen any threads on the recent death of a celebrity, I'm glad to say. This is primarily an advice forum for parents and it's a topic based discussion forum, rather than a social chat medium such as facebook. It has broadened out from its origins and now has specific sub forums for discussion for a vast range of individual topics as well as a general one called Chat which doesn't specify any particular topic and there's also one for Other Subjects.

What? There've been loads of threads about Liam Payne and at least two for Alex Salmond.

Sethera · 17/10/2024 18:41

HereComesColinFrissel · 17/10/2024 17:33

I'm so glad to see this thread as I've been thinking the same thing for a while

Most people read/see the news so there's no need to announce it with the ghoulish titles, "xxxx dead" - like you need to be the first to tell people.

It might be different if it was a thread titled "isn't it sad that xxxx has died" 🤔

Or even 'xxx tribute thread'.

Locutus2000 · 17/10/2024 15:37

All this performative grief business for someone you have never met started when Diana died.

Edited

I'm glad that SM was not a thing when she passed.

There was a lot of fake grieving imo then and if you dared not to grieve, you got backlash from people.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/10/2024 18:46

Absolutely agree

People fall over themselves to be first. It's unseemly

NotOneOfTheInCrowd · 17/10/2024 18:49

Seventeenth17 · 17/10/2024 11:42

Absolutely there's a need for threads for posters to talk and console and share thoughts, and so on, this a an important forum for that.

Posters can take a lot of succour and comfort from the community at such time.

It's the breathless haste that I've seen over the years (yes to recalling Green fields) that I find galling.

And yes to a PP pointing out that AIBU isn't the place for this sentiment.

"Competitive Sadding" I seem to recall that phrase from yore.

Nobody needs consoling or comforting over the death of a celebrity. Nobody knew him, and the music is still out there so nothing changes.

FjordPrefect · 17/10/2024 18:53

I don't see it any different to people who read about the death of a celeb and go and tell their partner. Not everyone has people in their life they can speak to, that's what social media is all about.

It's also not really any different to reading a thread you find distasteful and posting about that rather than speaking to someone about it irl.

There are people and their jobs are updating people's biographies. When these people die, upload the biography online.

DreamW3aver · 17/10/2024 19:02

QueenBitch666 · 17/10/2024 16:12

Does anyone actually care about drug and alcohol fuelled sleb deaths? Fake competitive mourning. It's all a bit cringe

What an odd question, have you just landed on earth and are unaware that in general it's a subject that interests people.

If no one was interested there wouldn't be a thread complaining about the number of people starting threads would there?

afrikat · 17/10/2024 19:07

What's odder to me is the 'active' thread that the OP rushed to post then never came back. Suggests they literally wanted to be the first to 'announce' it rather than felt sad and wanted to commiserate with people

YABU. It's news. It's public information. Someone's got to start the thread. Whether it's 5 seconds after it's announced on TV or the internet, or 5 minutes after, or half an hour after, what does it matter? What should be the required time in your humble opinion? 🙄

What is the etiquette according to @Seventeenth17 on starting a thread about a celebrity who has died...?! How long should one wait...........?

If you are aggrieved and butthurt that someone has started a thread about a celebrity who has just died because (in your opinion) it's 'too soon' to post it, then hide the thread. No-one's forcing you to open the thread, and read it.

MissRoseDurward · 17/10/2024 19:22

Someone's got to start the thread.

Why? Why has anyone 'got' to start a thread? It's not compulsory.

It's equally annoying when the BBC says 'tributes are pouring in' (pouring in to where?) and then proceeds to quote what a lot of minor celebs have posted on X. Cheap and lazy journalism by the BBC, and attention seeking from most of the people posting on X. If you were really close to the person who died, rushing to post on sm isn't going to be your first thought.

tigger1001 · 17/10/2024 19:30

Once it hits the news sites then I suppose it's fair game.

But social media generally is the devils work in these situations. No thought given to the families had the news before it was all over social media last night. People forget there is a real human who has died white real family members who are grieving.

The thought of someone close to the deceased seeing it on social media, simply because people are in a hurry to break it (not talking specifically about Mumsnet) rather than being told officially is just beyond awful.

Yes it might be a celebrity to us but they are first and foremost a human.

IntoTheOcean · 17/10/2024 19:47

ITV news just had a dreadfully poor taste piece with a smiley journalist interviewing one of his old teachers, who was gaily sharing photos and memories of him. Desperately trying to find some ‘exclusive’ about him to fill the news because actually his body is barely cold and the police haven’t concluded their investigations.
and there isn’t anything to say at this point other than he died and it’s tragic.

He died 24 hours ago.

Fucking disgraceful.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 17/10/2024 19:48

MissRoseDurward · Today 19:22

Why has anyone 'got' to start a thread? It's not compulsory.

Because they WANT to!

Because it's news. It's public knowledge and some people want to hear about it. If you and a few other clearly precious and fragile people don't wish to hear about it, that's too bad.

Maybe you (and the others agreeing with the OP) should steer clear of internet message forums, (and maybe the internet altogether,) seeing as you clearly can't cope with people posting certain things 'too soon!' 🙄

You do not have the right to police what people post, or how 'quickly' they post it when they find out a certain piece of news. As I said, if it bothers you SO much, just hide the thread as soon as you see it FGS!

WillowTit · 17/10/2024 19:48

Oh get a grip FFS! It's a huge news story. People are going to report things about it, and interview people who knew him. Catch yourself on. Ludicrous overreaction! 🙄

WillowTit · 17/10/2024 19:50

there were quite a few RIP threads for Maggie Smith
was that wrong?

I don’t think it is an overreaction. It’s awful. I find it sickening.

You don’t agree. Ok then.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/10/2024 19:54

I don't mind someone reporting it on here. I saw it here before other media, in the case of Liam. If that's the most recent example. Then obviously immediately checked it was legit.
These celebrities mean a lot to many people, and if someone was young then it's shocking. So I don't blame someone for making a post about it.

You really are reaching, aren’t you? How the fuck would you know that the OP wants to be the first to post about something like this? Are you and others who’ve agreed with you mindreaders? No, thought not. But I guess it helps you make your strange point on your mumsnetty high horse and feel better.
