To think the haste that some posters show to create a thread regarding the death of a celebrity is distasteful?

Some are in such a rush to be The One that announces the passing they can't even form a full sentence as the title.

It's a poor show.

Yes it’s weird, these posters are the ones who would sit knitting at the foot of the guillotine.

Ha! Probably wasn't meant in jest but this made me laugh.

ThePoshUns · 17/10/2024 12:10

Who decides what a respectful amount of time should be before starting a thread?
If it's in SM it's on here. That's just how it is.

MissFancyDay · 17/10/2024 12:13

Mmmmmmmmm, it's the posters who, when commenting on a celebrity death, or misfortune, always have to post a disclaimer first about whether they like them or not, that annoy me.

I mean, who cares. It was especially annoying in the Trump getting shot threads. Just say you are shocked, if you have to, it doesn't need any more, you're not going to look bad. Jeez.

Etincelle · 17/10/2024 12:14

I usually see it on MN before I get the notification from a news site. It doesn't bother me though.

nOasistickets · 17/10/2024 12:15

People are so morbid aren't they. Gross.

Most of them are grief vampires.

ChampaignSupernova · 17/10/2024 12:42

I also think it's disgusting that newspapers print it do quick. He has a 7 year old. How was Cheryl supposed to handle telling him that knowing it would be snowballing. No wonder Queen Elizabeth took William and Harry to Scotland and hid them from the world when their mum died. I can't begin to imagine what Liam's family are going through

Cornercandy · 17/10/2024 15:37

For one thing is a sad story when celebrities and other well known faces (politicians etc) die.

Hate it when people respond to comments with "who?". If you have never heard of the person, don't waste your energy with your ignorance.

SallyForf · 17/10/2024 11:27

We used to call it Competitive Sadding on here. Can't recall which sleb death prompted that phrase though.

All this performative grief business for someone you have never met started when Diana died.

HollyLollyMollyJolly · 17/10/2024 15:55

@Seventeenth17
Oh how i rushed in here! I was going to make a thread on exactly this topic this morning but just cba to create one. I've hidden about 4 to 6 Liam Payne threads since yesterday or today - all saying the same thing.

This happens all the time - someone dies and everyone and their dog wants to create their own thread to be the OP of a famous person's death thread. They obviously don't care to search first because they'd clearly see that a thread has already been created, and contribute to it.

It's the attention-seeking "grief vultures" I think. They love a good front seat hand wringing over the news of the death of someone they don't know.

HollyLollyMollyJolly · 17/10/2024 16:05

I've just read again and seen we're talking about slightly different things. I agree though but my main issue is how many posters create threads talking about one death (3 or more "Liam Payne has died" for example when they could simply search and see there's already a thread to add to).

It makes me wish mnhq can merge threads talking about the same thing into one - with the earliest one as the main OP/thread, like they do on another site. It would stop all the desperate wannabe-OPs from bothering with their own thread about someone's death.

Samcro · 17/10/2024 16:08

Motnight · 17/10/2024 11:29

I agree with this. It's news. Which we are allowed to discuss.

if its news, shouldn't it be posted in the news topic anyway.

lololulu · 17/10/2024 16:08

Did they spell his surname Pain or something?

QueenBitch666 · 17/10/2024 16:12

Does anyone actually care about drug and alcohol fuelled sleb deaths? Fake competitive mourning. It's all a bit cringe

Toronpo · 17/10/2024 16:13

I thought this too. And the fairly blunt thread title.

YOYOK · 17/10/2024 16:20

I find it grim that “Liam Payne dead” was posted as a title in AIBU. Weird choice of forum and insensitive wording.

Discussing big news is not necessarily a bad thing but some people seem to get something out of being the first to post.

Edited

I hid five separate threads within about ten minutes of the news 'breaking'. I daresay there are even more now?

I deleted them from Active so it wouldn't have been an arduous chore for the thread-starters to check if a thread already existed or not.

It's a strange phenomenon. Maybe it's linked to the App? Everything seems to be laid at the door on the App.

Oh dear! I'm off to hide more of them then. Yes, right from Active too.

doodleschnoodle · 17/10/2024 16:26

I always like the people pitching up 12 hours later and starting a thread like they are the first person to do so too.

Abitofalark · 17/10/2024 16:39

I haven't seen any threads on the recent death of a celebrity, I'm glad to say. This is primarily an advice forum for parents and it's a topic based discussion forum, rather than a social chat medium such as facebook. It has broadened out from its origins and now has specific sub forums for discussion for a vast range of individual topics as well as a general one called Chat which doesn't specify any particular topic and there's also one for Other Subjects.

Is that you, ChatGP? What an odd post!

I agree that the rush to be the first to start a thread is ghoulish.

I'm not sure if this is place for it, but I can't think of anywhere better, so in a somewhat realted moan:

I always hate it when the news say someone has "broken their silence" on something like this. I've just seen a headline "Liam Payne's 'devastated' family break silence" What do you mean break silence? It's litteraly not even been 12 hours and they don't owe anyone a comment.

I'm sure soon there will be reports that Harry Styles has "broken his slience" as his first reaction wasn't to jump straight on twitter when he found out!

I know when Matthew Perry died someone on here made a thread that his friends costars hadn’t said anything, like they were owed a statement on how heartbroken they are. How do you even start to put into words your grief and shock so soon after something like this has happened.

Liam Payne’s poor family could well have been asleep when the news broke, woken up to a barrage of texts and missed calls or potentially the police at the door. They’ll have woken up this morning and just tried to function. His sisters will have been trying to make sure if nothing else, his parents have drank something even if they can’t eat. They’ll have reached out to Cheryl to see how Bear is doing, maybe asked to meet them, just to connect and be there for each other. They are in shock and just hoping everyone can make it to the end of today when the reality can start to sink in tomorrow and they can start to try and sort the administrative nightmare associated with death.

TinkerTiger · 17/10/2024 16:51

Yes, and all those who revel in it will get defensive and rush to say there's nothing wrong with it.

But it's creepy.

I think competitive fake mourning is better than competitive nastiness.

HereComesColinFrissel · 17/10/2024 17:33

I'm so glad to see this thread as I've been thinking the same thing for a while

Most people read/see the news so there's no need to announce it with the ghoulish titles, "xxxx dead" - like you need to be the first to tell people.

It might be different if it was a thread titled "isn't it sad that xxxx has died" 🤔
