To think that releasing crickets at a gay rights conference, specifically to shut them down, should be considered a homophobic hate crime? Somehow these people are crowdfunding to do it AGAIN

The optics of having to fumigate a hall after gay people used it to speak about their rights being eroded should not be lost on anyone.

This is CLERLY A HATE CRIME - yet it's being reported as trans rights activists, not anti gay hate mongers, I can't really understand why not

The people that do this don't believe that any of the LGB Alliance are actually gay men or women - they think they're all white straight Tories. Probably being influenced by American right wing Christians.

Does anyone know where this has come from? Is it just a fabrication? I don't know who the people are (or care actually - as a white straight woman I also care about gay rights) but it almost feels like people just believing any old shit that fits their agenda.

Helleofabore · 17/10/2024 11:35

Could you be specific as to what they were discussing that you, personally, class as 'anti-trans' please?

Just so everyone reading along or posting is on the same page as to what you are referring to.

Edited

I wasn't at the conference so I can't say much.
But JKR said the phrase "lesbians don't have penises" in her opening comments, and the crickets were released just before Jamie Reed was about to give a talk about gender clinics.
This to me does not sound like silence on trans issues.

It's such a cruel thing to do to the insects too.

Yes that's what I think as well the poor insects lots probably got squashed , for no good reasonanda very juvenile thing to do.

Curlyboot · 17/10/2024 11:47

ArcheryAnnie · 17/10/2024 11:41

I'd be interested in an answer to this from anyone, not just @Curlyboot - especially whether the donor who calls themselves "MolotovNextTime" would consider this an attack, and if you do insist on calling this attack a protest, at what point you think legitimate protest tips over into an attack.

I'm clear that it was an attack. It was clearly designed to cause alarm and distress, and to shut the conference down. That's an attack, not a protest. (And I think "MolotovNextTime" would agree with me on this, even if we agree on nothing else.)

I’ve just donated based on this thread.

Protest away. If they start using Molotov cocktails then sure call it an attack.

But releasing crickets is not an attack.

To be fair, I would expect the opening remarks at a gay conference to be from a gay person, not a straight white woman (JKR).

LostTheMarble · 17/10/2024 11:50

Raspberryripple11 · 17/10/2024 11:31

There wasn't silence on trans issues though. There was anti-trans rhetoric.

But LGB meetings aren’t anything to do with being trans. There are trans supporters of the LGBA, those who recognise the distinction between sexuality and gendered lifestyles. The issues are around homosexuality not being recognised for what it is, not the delusion some TRAs give themselves that this is exclusionary to identifying as trans.

in that sentence, what role do the words "white" or even "woman" play? Your issue is that it was a straight rather than gay person.

IfIHadAHeart · 17/10/2024 11:52

It is not transphobic to only want to engage in sexual relations/a relationship with individuals who biologically match your sexuality. I wonder, in all seriousness, how quick some PPs would be to jump into bed with a trans person.

I am straight. I am only interested in biological men. It doesn’t make me homophobic, transphobic or anything else.

Raspberryripple11 · 17/10/2024 11:53

ImNoSuperman · 17/10/2024 11:42

Lesbians not being attracted to biological men or gay men not being attracted to biological women or wanting to engage in any form of intimacy with them is not transphobic. Biological men who identify as lesbians or biological women who identify as gay men claiming it is are being homophobic.

There's a difference between not wanting to sleep with someone and trying to take away someone's rights.

But you're ok with Mridul Wadhwa, a male who calls himself a woman but doesn't even have a GRC leading a women's shelter?

You're ok with Jason Grant being the lead in a period dignity group?

I take it you're also ok with males taking the gold medals from women's sporting events.

Is it only when the 'wrong' woman does something that you have an opinion?

Scottish group appoints man as first ever period dignity regional lead

Jason Grant’s appointment in Tay region receives incredulous response

DreamyCyanFinch · 17/10/2024 11:54

I know this is wrong thread but I wish people would not be so afraid of insects, some are really interesting, and adults often show kids they are scared of spiders etc and then the children learn the fear from them.If you don't live in Europe which a lot of people on here do, lots of insects are not really going to harm you.Even if they are, why this screaming or jumpy, behaviour this doesn't help either.
I tried really hard to teach my kids not to be frightened of insects only to have other adults,.make them afraid.
Then people use the insects in unpleasant ways like this to scare or upset people.
Okay end of rant.

They're relevant in response to the post I was replying to, but yes the most important part is that they're straight.

Most be people would be distressed at having hundreds of insects thrown upon them. That's why this method was chosen. So yes it was an action designed to cause distress and alarm; to intimidate the attendees and dissuade them and others from organising and attending similar gatherings.

Very obvious and very sinister

Agree - if I rocked up to a conference for T people and on the basis of disagreeing with their beliefs, released a load of insect causing them distress and alarm, would my protest be ok? Because I think that would be a shitty and immature thing to do and not a valid protest

I think you need to expand on what those rights are that they want to take away. I certainly wouldn't support taking anyone's rights away!
But I'd be surprised if this is what they are wanting.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 17/10/2024 11:58

it’s not a hate crime to protest against GC ideology

I could however have the rozzers popping by if I was to publicly state humans can't change sex Confused

To be fair, I would expect the opening remarks at a gay conference to be from a gay person, not a straight white woman (JKR).

The opening remarks were by one lesbian, followed by another lesbian. JKR's video message (she wasn't present) was a message of support from an ally. Which is welcomed and appreciated.

Would you find it amusing if it was for a group you attended?

BTW I'd be fascinated to know the reasoning of anyone who has ticked the "you are being unreasonable" box. What's reasonable about attacking a lesbian and gay conference?

Same here. Bet they don't comment though.

Spineless bigots no doubt.

I have mixed opinions on the things you've mentioned. But I thought about my own experiences, as a research scientist.
If I'd gone to a conference about prostate cancer, and the opening speech was by someone who wasn't a scientist, didn't really know anything about prostate cancer, and was only invited because they'd been vocal about the need to reduce research and funding into bowel cancer, then yeah I'd find that a bit odd. (and I'd probably think that the organisers cared more about reducing bowel cancer research than furthering prostate cancer research).
