I have to go in for a minor procedure, I will need the afternoon, a full day and possibly a 2nd day off.
How much detail do I have to give? I do not want people to know why I am going in. I am in a school and things get around.

Tried to edit to get rid of the poll but don't know how to!

Nothing.

Just say a medical procedure. If they're cheeky enough to ask for more information give them your best teacher stare and say you're not happy to discuss it.

You don't have to give details, but you might have to provide evidence of your appointment. You could copy the letter and redact any identifying details of the clinic type and procedure. I've never had to provide evidence, but it depends on your employer.

To HR (or head depending on the school size) I'd be as honest as possible.
To anyone else, "minor medical procedure, I'll be back on Friday".

I agree. And things shouldn't "get around".
