We've got a mouse in the house.

I'm TERRIFIED! How do I get rid of it asap!? It's even coming out in the day!!!!!

We're also in London!

Get a mouse trap from B&Q would be my advice

Kosenrufugirl · 16/10/2024 13:37

If it's coming in the house during the day it's probably very hungry

WimpoleHat · 16/10/2024 13:38

I hate to say this, but in my experience it is very unlikely to be just one. The humane traps are good if you’re okay with taking them to release; otherwise, I’d call a pest control service.

Lincoln24 · 16/10/2024 13:39

I had this, in hindsight I think the mouse had come in through a space like an open door which was then closed, so it couldn't get out again and was consequently very hungry. As we never found a hole and haven't had another since.

I'm absolutely terrified of mice so I had to go straight for the snap traps with peanut butter, I couldn't deal with live traps. Caught in 24 hours and that was that.

Wittyapple · 16/10/2024 13:41

Make sure no food is left out, and in secure containers.
Keep the space clean and rubbish free. (I've bleached my floors every day when i had the same problem because they hate the smell)
They also hate the smell of lavender oil and cinnamon.
Most importantly, make sure all holes are filled in (check places like the boiling cupboard/ behind washing machine etc. (they can get in through tiny holes the size of a pencil)
You can buy plug ins from amazon that deter them. Truly tho, once you've done all that, the only way to get rid of them is with traps and poison. They can be purchased discreetly on amazon, or visit b&q today if you dont want to wait.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 16/10/2024 13:41

If you can afford to then contact pest control. They came to us and found entry point and mouse activity areas (different to where I'd seen it) and once eradicated they blocked the entry points. We then put some mesh over the air bricks to try and prevent them getting in again.
I'm still on high alert 6 months later so I do sympathise.

WineLover21 · 16/10/2024 13:45

Okay, thank you. I think it's just one as we have a fox in the garden every single evening. It's coming out from the gap between the sink and running across.

I'm extremely house clean so this is a disaster but it's now gone from staying in the kitchen and I watch it run down the corridor.

I can't see any evidence of it eating the cupboard etc.

Is it likely to be solo?

😭😭😭😭

The mouse sticky pads from Amazon were the only thing that worked for us. I agree about removing all crumbs, pet food, bread, snacks etc. from all rooms in the house asap and blocking air bricks.

WineLover21 · 16/10/2024 13:45

Off to get the bleach!

But I do have two young kids and worry about this!

Get plenty of the cheap wooden spring traps. The last ones i bought were in packs of 3 ( used to be 4) . These work better than the fancy plastic/ metal / electronic types Ive found.

Bait them all up with something sticky - peanut butter ,nutella, fudge. All work fine. I put a smidge under the little plate as well as on top as that encourages the mouse to jiggle the trap enough to set it off.

Practice setting the traps without the bait in place first as it might get a bit messy on your first tries. Practice makes perfect!

Put the loaded traps along the walls and behind furniture but in places you can check often. If you're squeamish lay the traps on paper or card to help removal to the bin. Throw the entire thing away and put down a new one.
Repeat until there have been no caught mice for at least a week. Then you can relax. ( but make sure you have some traps in store just in case)

WineLover21 · 16/10/2024 13:50

Thank you! Good advice!

I bought two and I watched it sniff the trap and walk away. It's like it's too clever.

£300 quote for a pest visit! (Including VAT). Also didn't like that they asked how many bedrooms we have. Like they're judging the quote on house price!

Has anyone tried the sonic plugs?

We have, they didn't work. Snap traps with chocolate did though. Buy a few different types

the quote - the amount of deterrents required is likely to be dependent on the size of the house - 4 bedroomed family home requiring more work than a studio flat.

ExtraOnions · 16/10/2024 13:54

Sonic Plugs … we never had much success.

Stick with a trap, with peanut butter on.. make sure there is no food anywhere else, it will eventually get caught

ExtraOnions · 16/10/2024 13:55

When we needed a pest controller it was £40 per visit (North)

user1471551663 · 16/10/2024 13:55

We have had mice and use the sonic plugs, mouse away which is basically a minty spray that stops them being able to recognise their tracks and snap traps. If you use humane traps you have to take them miles away otherwise they find their way back.

APurpleSquirrel · 16/10/2024 13:56

Glue traps are now illegal.
My vegan friend advised the snap traps as they're the most humane.
Our mouse had a liking for ice cream cones, shunned the Nutella on the traps. In the end it trapped itself in our bath! DH then caught it in a box & drive it 30miles away & released it 😂

Noodlesnotstrudels · 16/10/2024 13:58

We live in London and a mouse ran across the bedroom floor when DD2 was 2weeks old. It coincided with new neighbours replacing their floor so I suspect it had been happily living under the floor / between our terraces. I was horrified!

DH bought steel wool and went round the whole house blocking up every tiny hole. We did a deep clean and put out child safe traps with peanut butter and bait stations in case there was a nest somewhere. Plus we put a sonic thing in every room. In the end, we caught 3 i think? Haven't seen one since.

Once the DC are old enough, we will be acquiring a cat!

Noodlesnotstrudels · 16/10/2024 14:00

We also had a couple of electronic traps - we did catch one in there as well but they are obviously much messier to dispose of. With the basic snap traps, we just bin the whole thing and buy new.

WineLover21 · 16/10/2024 13:51

They do not work.
If you have seen a mouse in daytime then there is more than one. Try traps for a few days or poison but if they don't work you need a professional.

This is horrifically cruel.

Get a humane mouse trap and put peanut butter and chocolate in. It will be in there by morning. Then release in a nearby park by some brambly hedging.
Mice are harmless and beautiful. It won't cause you any harm unless it wee's in your cereal.

Similar here, we had one which we killed with traps within a couple of days, blocked where we thought it was coming in and have had no more since touch wood and that was months ago
