We've got a mouse in the house.

I'm TERRIFIED! How do I get rid of it asap!? It's even coming out in the day!!!!!

Mice are not harmless, they are a health hazard. They have no bladder so essentailly dribble urine wherever they run and carry diseases.
Having said that I wouldn't use the sticky pads but I would want them dispatched asap.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/10/2024 14:08

I had a mouse in my house recently that escaped from the cat!

They aren't that different to catch because they have poor eyesight. I just stood still and waited for it to come out from where it was hiding. Then I put a tea towel over it and carried it outside.

If you have more than one then you can buy humane mouse traps and release them outside. You don't need to kill everything!

You do need to figure out where it got in and block the hole though.

Hadalifeonce · 16/10/2024 14:10

I saw one in the garage last week, I put down a trap armed with a bit of ham. Disposed of the body the next day. Know they are hardly ever alone, I set the trap the next night, got the second blighter! I set the trap again, nothing the next morning.
I will set it periodically over the winter.

If you don’t take them miles away they’ll come back though!

they are vermin and breed like crazy so fine to kill them IMO

Rosy has been telling me about a mouse in the house for the last hour or so. It's amazing how small a space a quite large cat can squeeze into when she's on the prowl. I hope she catches it sooner rather than later.

Thank you! Good advice!

I bought two and I watched it sniff the trap and walk away. It's like it's too clever.

£300 quote for a pest visit! (Including VAT). Also didn't like that they asked how many bedrooms we have. Like they're judging the quote on house price!

Where are you. I'm in Chingford. The company who came to me cost around £190 if I recall correctly.

IlovePond · 16/10/2024 14:17

Hi, we got Rentokil in who were brilliant. I know it’s expensive but there is never just one mouse, (unless, like my DSis, you see the cat bringing one in🙀) The longer you leave it, the harder it is to get rid, ime. And, also from experience, it’s almost impossible to get rid of them yourself. Rentokil know the best place to put the traps - the person we called in put them in the most hard to reach places, but it worked.

Rentokil guy also told me - don’t know if it’s true, but it’s a great thought - that mice travel in advance scouting parties when moving in somewhere. He said he expected to find at least seven, even though we’d only seen one. In the end, he caught nine, I think.

They ask how many rooms so they know how many traps to lay/quote for - they need to put traps in every room.

Ours were dead and gone very quickly.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

No worse than the bottom of your shoes when you come in from outdoors, a dog, a cat, the inside of your fridge or your hands unless you washed them seconds ago.

Mice are not the plague.

People really over react. They are tiny and harmless and very beautiful.

The council come out for cheap, if not free. And are better than rent o kill etc as they have no financial gain in coming back.

Failing that, just pour straight bleach everywhere and they'll die. Not great with kids tho.

My cats abandon live mice in the house all the time. I leave a packet of crisps with a couple of crisps in the bottom out and they can't resist. As soon as I hear rustling I pick up the bag and take the mouse outside.

The reason you could catch it is because your cat had injured it. It would have been kinder to kill it than let it go. They are very fast normally, you’d have no chance of catching a healthy mouse with a tea towel.

if you’ve seen one OP, there are likely more. Snap traps with peanut bait works well.

IlovePond · 16/10/2024 14:24

To be fair to our local Rentokil - we got a free follow up visit and were then given the all-clear. We had no hard sell, they actually offered us advice over the phone first, but I was practically begging them to come! But if the local council offer a service more cheaply, then obviously that’s great.

stayathomer · 16/10/2024 14:25

Live trap with chocolate spread or peanut butter then later go empty it far far away (as they try to return). We got rid of 4 this way, all ran off happily into the woods!!

MissEsmeWatson · 16/10/2024 14:27

The humane traps are brilliant, please don't be cruel 😢

Depends on your area, they no longer offer pest control for mice in my local authority, only rats. Austerity cuts!

crostini · 16/10/2024 14:31

@WineLover21

I did it as a last ditch attempt. I mean I absolutely covered the kitchen floor in thick bleach 😅 they were all dead within 24 hours.

WineLover21 · 16/10/2024 14:46

I've ordered everything I can! (No sticky traps though)

WineLover21 · 16/10/2024 14:49

Any idea why one would be out in the day!? I thought they were nocturnal?

I hope it's just one 😭

Remember you need to block gaps and entry points after you remove them otherwise you may trap them in the house, floorboards and walls or wherever they are.

horseHorseHorse · 16/10/2024 15:01

Selinaserena · 16/10/2024 13:45

The mouse sticky pads from Amazon were the only thing that worked for us. I agree about removing all crumbs, pet food, bread, snacks etc. from all rooms in the house asap and blocking air bricks.

Sticky traps are fucking evil and anyone who uses them should be ashamed. The mice die in agony and terror.

horseHorseHorse · 16/10/2024 15:02

WineLover21 · 16/10/2024 14:21

Chlorine gas. It's evil.

WimpoleHat · 16/10/2024 13:38

I hate to say this, but in my experience it is very unlikely to be just one. The humane traps are good if you’re okay with taking them to release; otherwise, I’d call a pest control service.

Don't faff with humane traps. Get the savagely efficient ore-baited ones.

Then try to stop any more getting in

That's a disgustingly cruel thing to suggest.

I hope you don't call yourself an animal lover.
