I'm looking for film suggestions, want to watch something but I don't know what!

Please give me some ideas Smile

Steel Magnolias
Little Women - The Winona Ryder one - The new one is shocking and annoys me as it feels rushed and misses / changes so much of the book - which is my comfort read

HappyDane · 16/10/2024 10:34

I like Strictly Ballroom, and Muriel's Wedding; they're just not on my list of go-to comfort films. Same goes for quite a few others on the thread - lots of good films, they just don't necessarily feel like a warm blanket.

DrizzleMySwizzle · 16/10/2024 11:01

The scene where Beth dies in the 90s version of Little Women is my go-to if I need a cry. Claire Danes breaaaaaaaks my heart in that scene. Can't even remember Beth snuffing it in the Greta Gerwig version.

Working Girl
Some Like It Hot
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Skyfall
Shakespeare in Love

I love horror movies, so my top 3 comfort films would be

  • Jaws
  • The Amityville Horror (the 1979 version)
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street

Non horror, that'd be:

  • Home Alone
  • Airplane
  • Muriel's wedding
  • Almost Famous
  • And loads of french comedies that I watched many times when I was a kid (Les Bronzés, le père Noel est une ordure, La Crise, Cuisine & Dépendances etc...)

You've got Mail. I love it so much

bifurCAT · 16/10/2024 11:37

The lovely man in my life's is Twilight... (sometimes I wonder...)

MrsHemswoth · 16/10/2024 11:38

Bridget Jones, the Holiday, Notting Hill, love Actually, Bridesmaids

icouldholditwithacobweb · 16/10/2024 11:38

The Grand Budapest Hotel (fun, quirky, love Wes Anderson)
Magic Mike XXL (if I need a mood lift, this does it every time!)
Bridesmaids & Deadpool 1 or 2 (all good for a laugh)

dimples76 · 16/10/2024 11:42

While You Were Sleeping
Hallmark Christmas films
Guys & Dolls

Both Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films
The Italian Job (slightly prefer the new version)
Eat, Pray, Love

Er, please don't take this the wrong way, but why do you prefer the second version of the Italian Job?

Until you mentioned that, I hadn't realised that the Italian Job (V1) was a top comfort film for me. Caine! Benny Hill! Noel Coward! Scenery! Cars! Soundtrack! Plot! Ending! etc.

SammyScrounge · 16/10/2024 15:17

Dr.Zhivago --'Julie Christy , Omar Sharif

HappyDane · 16/10/2024 15:20

I do love the Grand Budapest Hotel. If I watch it a few more times it's likely to make it onto the comfort list.

Dr. Zhivago is brilliant.

Needhelp101 · 16/10/2024 15:36

@GnomeDePlume I completely agree with you about Gosford Park. Adore that film and despite the subject matter, the setting, the location and the time of year make it so cozy.

Any Jane Austen adaptation (except P&P 2005 which just annoys me).

And YES to When Harry Met Sally. I too can quote it verbatim too.
Sally (talking about her days of the week underpants): "They don't make Sunday."
Harry: "Why not?"
Sally (solemnly): "Because of God."

girlmeetsboy · 16/10/2024 16:01

Rocketman
The Holiday
The Proposal
Love Actually
Notting Hill

9 1/2 weeks.
Beaches.
Kate and Leopold.

Soukmyfalafel · 16/10/2024 17:17

Very dated now, but strictly ballroom was a good film back in the 90s when I wanted to watch something light as a teen.

Soukmyfalafel · 16/10/2024 17:20

Haven't watched in years, so may have not aged well, but old Brit/Irish comedies like The Full Monty, Waking Ned or The Commitments might also be good.
