The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Best film ever!

Tittat50 · 15/10/2024 23:13

The Shawshank Redemption. It's not wholesome and pretty grim in places, but I just enjoy how it unfolds and that's a familiar comfort when I'm struggling.

Peccary · 15/10/2024 23:16

Stardust, the Princess Bride

The Mummy (Brendan Fraser one obviously) Raiders of the Lost Ark, Tomb Raider. I love a good archaeological load of nonsense

When Harry Met Sally
Back to the Future
The Talented Mr Ripley
The Favourite
Volver (2006 Spanish film with Penelope Cruz).

Nearly every other Penelope Cruz movie I've seen

Holotropic · 15/10/2024 23:34

Key Largo, A Month in the Country, Un coeur en hiver, High Society, Cyrano de Bergerac, Annie Hall, Black Narcissus.

Clueless
Mean Girls
Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistlestop Cafe
The Parent Trap (Hayley Mills version)
Muriel’s Wedding

I adore You’ve Got Mail, Meg Ryan is wonderful and Tom Hanks is just right.
When Harry met Sally, I could quote the script verbatim. “Oh but baby fish mouth is sweeping the nation.”
Jaws, just for the nostalgia, killer sharks aside it reminds me of 70s Summers.
Hot Fuzz, silly, very English, comforting and funny.
Railway children, just for the line “daddy, my daddy.”
Alpha Papa, very silly siege caper, sort of soporific, can “watch” with your eyes closed. Well it is set in a radio station.

Saturday Night Fever
Any Bond film with Roger Moore
Shawshank Redemption

Mama2many73 · 16/10/2024 00:16

While you were sleeping
Good Will Hunting
Down with Love

Also love Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the dead.

HappyDane · 16/10/2024 00:17

I second Roger Moore as Bond. And will add all seasons of The Saint! Although that's not a film...

A Good Year

Love that film... I'm not usually a fan of Russell Crowe, but the role suited him, and I though he carried it off well.

A fun set of three films was "The Booze Cruise"... can't remember which of the set it was, but the one where actor Brian (George & Mildred) Murphy was unknowingly given wacky baccy was so hilarious.... even now when I think of the train hooter sound "Wooo-woooo", it makes me smile.

Serendipity with John Cusack & Kate Beckinsale remains a favourite of mine.

Something completely different, Metropolis ... the updated version.
I bought the music soundtrack to it too.

HelloYouGuys · 16/10/2024 00:46

Forgot Edie with Sheila Hancock.
The film encourages me to be strong woman.

changedusernameforthis1 · 16/10/2024 00:47

Harry Potter - all of them. Same with twilight. Also love watching Kingsman - I have a soft spot for Colin Firth.

Things like Emma, Bridgerton, Pride & Prejudice make me feel all cosy and relaxed too.

HelloYouGuys · 16/10/2024 00:58

Blinded By The Light.. wasn't a fan of Bruce Springsteen, but when I hear his most popular tracks now, it brings back the film for me.

ballybooboo · 16/10/2024 01:11

Anything Jane Austin

HelloYouGuys · 16/10/2024 01:27

Probably not your idea of a comfort film but I love The Nightingale. The vengeance is comforting.

SammyScrounge · 16/10/2024 02:36

Cranford Mrs Gaskel

SammyScrounge · 16/10/2024 02:40

The Goodbye Girl with Richard Dreyfus is hilarious.
And so is Tootsie starring Dustin Hoffman

Clarabellasingsthisbit · 16/10/2024 02:46

Four Weddings.

Edited to add: Gosford Park and Local Hero

Wonderwall23 · 16/10/2024 02:57

Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
Bridget Jones

GnomeDePlume · 16/10/2024 03:10

Kingdom of Heaven
The Day of The Jackal (1970s version)
Gosford Park

For me, comfort means detail. You can watch Gosford Park just for a 'whodunit' then watch it again straight after and realise you missed a lot, then watch it again and realise you missed some more.
